It is interestingly sad how debates on gun violence and gun control is being handled in our society by our top leaders and lobbyist. Gun control has become a serious issue and a national epidemic, however, the debate is far from over. In the article “under the gun” by writers Rottenberg, Rice and Franich, for entertainment weekly, the writers discussed the failing of gun control laws and the increase in gun violence. By setting sides of their argument, the writers discussed violence in movies, TVs and videogames and how this violence impact our society, thus allowing their audience to decide for themselves.

lobbyists placed blame at the door steps of the entertainment industries accusing them for producing movies, TV shows and videogames with violent content. In the wake of the sandy hook shooting, the executive vice president NRA Wayne LaPierre in a press release accused the entertainment industry for their share of gun violence in our communities and neighborhood. He said “the entertainment industry “portray life as a joke and murder as a way of life, and they have the nerve to call it entertainment.” Adding that the industry do not care what the release to the public in the name of movies TV shows etc. In their defense the entertainment industries acknowledge the need to address violence in their materials.
This was echoed by producers, actors, actresses and chairmen of the various entertainment industries. They stress the need and readiness to the part of the national convention on gun violence. However the writers emphasis hypocrisy on the part of the entertainment industries seeing they have done little to discourage gun violence in their premiers. Even though actors and actress banded together for a public-service announcement to urge enactment of stricter gun-control laws, what follows is ironical as these same actors and actresses are seen wielding guns in subsequent …show more content…
premiers. On the margin of the article, have quotes with smiling faces from most celebrities on the issues about guns in the industries yet nobody in the industry want to speak publicly on the issue. And representatives for the major studios declined to comment on this story, referring EW to the MPAA. Moreover actors from most popular couldn’t grant interviews because they’ve been asked by their directors not comment on this issue. The article “Under the Gun” does not provide any solution on the epidemic of gun violence facing the nation nor what the entertainment industries should do to discourage gun violence in our society, however, it does provides its audience with an interesting read, however varied viewpoints and logical arguments.
Nothing is going to change as the debate goes on when neither side wants to assume responsibility for this epidemic and the pointing of fingers. The writers provided weak arguments in their publication since it focused merely on the audience of the EW, and it failed to condemn its audience who are basically interested in violent content movies, TV shows and Videogames. The publication does not appeal to the majority of audience whose interest is outside the EW. However I think the entertainment industries could not be blamed or claim responsibility for gun violence in our societies, they are only depicting what is already happening in our communities.
Take a look at the movie “City of God” co-directed by Fernando Marielles and Katia Lund and released in 2002, this movies is based on real life event and depicts the growth of organized crime in Cidade de Deus a suburb of Rio de Janeiro between the 1960’s early 1980’s. This movie received four academy awards in 2004. Can the producers of the movie be blame for promoting gun violence? Absolutely not! Because today’s entertainment audience want contents with violent scenes and this is how they appeal to their audience. The
industry tries to portray how our society have developed the belief in gun violence. There is more to the issues of gun violence and laws than the writers published, most notably is the prevalence and accessibility of guns in our society. Anybody can go to a gun shop to purchase a gun without proper background check by the seller. Also amongst the issue is hate crime, gang related violence and the likes. It is imperative that our leaders and lobbyist to play their responsible role to make sure our communities and the nation is devoid of gun violence by enacting stricter gun laws. 2. According to Sobchack, contemporary screen violence greatly differs than portrayals of violence in years past. Today, violent scenes are careless and lack significance because we as audiences have become calloused and desensitized to any acts of violence. She states that there is “no grace or benediction attached to violence. Indeed, its very intensity seems diminished” (Sobchack 432). Senseless violence, gruesome acts, and profound amounts of gore are prevalent in movies today, and because even this is not enough, it must be accompanied by loud blasts and noise, constantly moving scenes to keep audiences stimulated and large quantities of violence for viewers to enjoy what they are watching. Decades ago, it was the story that was engaging to audiences and filmmaking was an art.
Guns have possessed the spotlight of almost every news station. From the latest tragedy of a shooting killing innocent men, women and children to the arguments centering around if our gun laws possess strict enough qualities to keep our country safe. Charles C. W. Cooke, the author of “Gun-Control Dishonesty”, spreads his conservative view on the topic by ripping away any hope for a brighter day. Cooke’s main idea states that if nothing has happened to make gun law more strict even after the lives of innocent children were mercilessly ripped away from their young bodies than nothing should or could ever change. On the other hand, Adam Gopnik wrote his article, “Shooting”, uses a more liberal approach and inspires his audience to act upon the much needed change in our society

One could easily dismiss movies as superficial, unnecessarily violent spectacles, although such a viewpoint is distressingly pessimistic and myopic. In a given year, several films are released which have long-lasting effects on large numbers of individuals. These pictures speak
Wilson’s passion for this subject shines through his work to the audience. While reading this essay the audience can interpret that Wilson feels deeply about illegal guns, and what could be a possible situation because of this. Wilson does not push his reader’s to agree with him, but simply gives reasons to contemplate. This essay was originally presented in the New York Times, which gives Wilson an audience that is familiar with high crime rates due to living in a popular city.
When 2 young men, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, went on a shooting spree in Littleton, Colorado, killing 15 people, including themselves, there was a public outcry for censorship of every type of entertainment and changes in gun laws despite Eric Harris’s journal entry titled, “Last Wishes” asking that no one be blamed, other than himself and Klebold, for the massacre (“As You Were”, par. 2). After the 1999 school shooting now simply known as Columbine, a “Newsweek” pole showed that, “about half of all Americans want to see the movie industry, the TV industry, computer game makers, Internet services and gun manufacturers and the NRA make major policy changes to help reduce teen violence” (Alter, par. 1). According to Dave Cullen in his article “Let the Litigation Begin” several lawsuits were filed against the parents of the two boys responsible for the shooting spree claiming that Harris’s and Klebold’s families, “breached their duty of care” by allowing their sons to amass a cache of illegal weapons (Cullen, par. 5). Although the boys’ parents denied such allegations, they settled out of court for $1.6 million (Cullen, par. 5)...
Guns are not the trouble, people are. The United States is #1 in world gun ownership, and yet is only 28th in the world in gun murders per 100,000 people. The number of unintentional fatalities due to firearms declined by 58 percent between 1991 and 2011 Based on these facts, one can see the guns not the causes of gun violence. moreover, civilians who get permits take gun safety courses and have criminal background...

Aroung the time of John F. Kennedy’s assassination, the controversial and widely argued issue of gun control sparked and set fire across America. In the past decade however, it has become one of the hottest topics in the nation. Due to many recent shootings, including the well known Sandy Hook Elementary school, Columbine High School, Aurora movie theater, and Virginia Tech, together totaling 87 deaths, many people are beginning to push for nationwide gun control. An article published in the Chicago Tribune by Illinois State Senator Jacqueline Collins, entitled “Gun Control is Long Overdue” voiced the opinion that in order for America to remain the land of the free, we must take action in the form of stricter gun laws. On the contrary, Kathleen Parker, a member of the Washington Post Writers Group whose articles have appeared in the Weekly Standard, Time, Town & Country, Cosmopolitan, and Fortune Small Business, gives a different opinion on the subject. Her article in The Oregonian “Gun Control Conversation Keeps Repeating” urges Americans to look at the cultural factors that create ...
People have always been looking for a reason why horrible things happen. The media is quick to blame video games as the target and cause of many shootings that have occurred, ever since the Columbine and Quake. People have been blaming video games for violence for years now, ever since violent video games have been made. News reports blame video games more and more for each shooting, telling the public how this person played video games for x amount of hours a day, and that video games caused him or her to shoot people, and how video games encourage and reward violence. Anti-video game lobbyists have been campaigning to have violence removed from video games, citing resources that they themselves have created as reasons for such, poorly done studies where they confirm that kids are more aggressive through how much hot sauce they put on someone’s fries.
Today in the United States many people argue over the fact of guns being legal or illegal. There are people using guns for personal safety and there are others who use them for crimes, as well as for other situations. Firearm deaths in the United States have slowly been decreasing from year to year with all these bills getting passed to promote a safer country than ever before. Guns are the main weapon for youth suicide, school shootings, and for committing murder. In 2010 there were 2,711 infants, child, and teenage firearm deaths. As in school shootings and in committing murder, studies show shooters often had multiple, non-automatic guns, shootings were planned, most youth tell before shooting, shooters have a history of being bullied or threatened, shooters have mental issues, and shooters have done suicidal gestures before (Gun Control with School Shootings). Although there are people who use guns for murdering, there are also those who oppose guns being used without the proper requirements. 85% of all respondents to the survey supporting requiring states to report people to national background-checks systems who are prohibited from owning gu...
One paramount debate that truly highlights the two sides of this controversy occurred in July of 1997. As George Gerbner, the former dean of the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Communications, argued that, “Formula-driven media violence is not an expression of crime statistics, popularity, or freedom. It is de facto censorship driven by global marketing, imposed on creative people, foisted on the children of the world” (“Is Media” 1). Critic Todd Gitlin responded to that argument by stating, “Television violence is mainly redundant, stupid, and ugly,” it does not cause violence in its viewers, and the biggest problem is that the profiteers of television have to produce this “formulaic stuff” (1). Personally, I agree with George Gerbner’s view on this subject. In my opinion, the overabundance of violence in American media has caused adverse effe...
Every day some news related to gun violence are being heard all over the world. Shooting in driveway, public places, schools, homicide and suicide are some of different types of gun violence. Shooting on people and killing them is a big issue in the world and different comments are provided about that. One of the most important of them is about gun control laws. Stingl (2013) says “The term gun control as it is used in the United States refers to any action taken by the federal government or by state or local governments to regulate, through legislation, the sale, purchase, safety, and use of handguns and other types of firearms by individual citizens.” According to this idea gun control laws should be stricter and people should not be able to have access to guns easily. However, there are many other people who believe this idea is not a good solution and never help. This essay will demonstrate for and against views about the topic. People who agree with this idea consider: firstly, stricter laws will reduce violence and gun control means crime control. Secondly, some research shows people with gun are more at risks of getting shot. Thirdly, guns can always be misused by their owners and finally, stricter law is the best and the faster way to control crime and make community safe. While opponents say first of all, guns are necessary for people safety and protection. Secondly, guns are not the only tools for killing and violence; there are other weapons too and finally, gun ownership is human rights.
