Courage Comes in Many Different Forms Have you ever heard of a courageous person such as Rosa Parks, the Monuments Men, or women all around the world that won the International Women of Courage Awards? Have you ever wondered what being courageous actually means? There are many heroes in the world some are well known and some are unexpected. But they all fall under the category of being a courageous hero. Some people think being a hero means you have to have superpowers. However, this claim is invalid because Rosa Parks, Monument Men or winners of awards didn’t have super powers and they are still heroes everyday people admire. Rosa Parks didn’t have superpowers, she didn’t need them to become a hero. All she needed was courage. Courage means many different things, for Rosa Parks it meant refusing to give up her seat on a bus. Paragraph 1 in An Act of Courage states “African Americans were not allowed to use the same restrooms or water fountains as white residents.” According to paragraph 3 of An Act of Courage, Rosa Parks was determined to do more for her community. Webster Dictionary has exactly 5 definitions under the word hero and still no two people explain heroism the same. Superman and Captain America are a glimpse of the fictional characters society titles a hero. Firefighters and Military portray heroism each day in the lives of every civilian. As Sullivan and Venter stated “individuals are referred to as ‘heroes’ for seemingly different reasons” and even through endless studies the adjectives referring heroes is ever changing. Among the various ideas of what it means to be a hero, boldness and valiance capture the essence of heroism.
People can be heros to Dr. King if they believe in themselves. According to Dr.King all heros need to be brave. “...with the noble sense of purpose that enables them to face jeering,and hostile mobs,and with agonizing loneliness that characterizes the life of the pioneer.”(30) In this quote Dr.King explains that a hero faces many obstacles on their journey. But heroes face their journey with courage and bravery. Rosa Parks was a woman that had enough of segregation. “I was forty-two. No,the only tired I was,was tired of giving in…. He asked was I going to stand up. I said No.”(6-7) This quote from Rosa Parks explained that she wasn’t afraid to say no. Dr. King calls Rosa Parks a hero for her courage in the fight against segregation. For Dr.King heroes face their obstacles with confidence and courage.
Did you know all women have super powers? Most women are usually underestimated, but they are actually stronger and more courageous than most men. Women have demonstrated their strengths multiple times throughout the past. For example Rosa parks did not fall under the pressure of the man who told her to move to the back of the in order for someone to take her seat. There are two women in particular who stood up to their issues regardless of their setbacks. Antigone and Erin Brockovich were both women who took a stand against the different stereotypes that people have placed on them. They showed how they do not care for the consequences, instead they continued to fight harder to gain respect. Antigone and Erin Brockovich faced adversity but still demonstrated their levels of strength even though the outcome may not be what they expected.
In conclusion, Rosa Parks was an outstanding hero that helped desegregate the city buses of Montgomery, Alabama. She gained a lot of fellow friendships and also became a civil right Activists. As time passes, the meaning of heroism constantly changes for me. Throughout my nomadic stroll through life, I’ve come to view all people as having the potential to excrete heroic quality, but this has not always been the case. In my younger years I only identified Heroism as being obtainable for men. It’s certainly my judgement then, did not serve me well.
