In attacking the Great Depression he did much to develop a partial welfare state in the United States and to make the federal government an agent of social and economic reform. His administration indirectly encouraged the rise of organized labor and greatly invigorated the Democratic party. His foreign policies, while occasionally devious, were shrewd enough to sustain domestic unity and the allied coalition in World War II. Roosevelt was a president of stature.
Roosevelt’s inaugural address focused on the current situation of the nation and he intended to declare war on the Great Depression. He stated a need to move as a nation through his leadership and become a better nation. Roosevelt took a strong stand and proclaimed, "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. He looks to the future asking the nation to fulfill their “true destiny” of ministering to themselves and their fellow men.
Roosevelt used personification in his speech in different ways such as he personifies his actions while his presidency in using phrases such as “but their efforts have been cast in the pattern of an outworn”. Roosevelt described something so that others can understand, he talked about the failure of America during the Great Depression. Roosevelt also talked about his plans in helping America while his presidency, “I am prepared under my constitutional duty to recommend the measures that a stricken nation in the midst of a stricken world may require”. Roosevelt also used diction in his First Inaugural Address in order to demonstrate his word choices in introducing the New Deal. America was facing severe economic issues during the Great Depression, farmers find no markets for their produce, savings of many years in thousands of families were gone and a host of unemployment citizens were facing the grim problem of existence. Roosevelt wanted actions for citizens and actions were given. Roosevelt give out examples of diction such as “let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself, nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance”, Roosevelt repeated his chosen words in some point of the phrase to achieve an artistic effect which is best known as diction. He wants the American People to understand that they are safe and there is nothing to worry about. He feels that he and the United States Congress are doing everything they can to protect the United States. He drives this home by promising we, “will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.” He promises that this will never happen again which gives the reader even more confidence that they will be safe. F.D.R. had great leadership qualities he passed many forms in congress that probably would have failed otherwise would have failed. Roosevelt was elected the most of any other president in U.S. history. That proves that he could sway large numbers of people to believing that his way of thinking was the best. In February 1937, he asked Congress to authorize him to appoint as many as six new justices to the Court. A great controversy swept Congress and the country. Many people denounced the proposal to "pack" the Court. Roosevelt's plan failed, but the gradual retirement of the older justices brought more liberal ones to the Supreme Court. Even while the debate was going on, the Court had modified its decisions. Thereafter it approved of most government regulation of the nation's economy. Roosevelt was like a mad inventor he would come up with a plain to fix a problem and if I didn't work he would keep trying to cerotic it in tell he made it work to help the country. Some people criticized Roosevelt saying he tried to do to much, and even went as far as saying that he overstepped his boundries as being president. But in my option Roosevelt was probably the most important part of helping our country out of the depression.
President Roosevelt brought the executive branch of the government into power like never before. He is hated to this day by many people. But for the majority of the country during one of our toughest times, he was what we needed. Without consulting history acknowledging that, it’s impossible to judge what he did very negatively. The old ways weren’t working, and while President Hoover tried to do something, it wasn’t enough. President Roosevelt was more successful with the actions he took for relief during the Great Depression.
Roosevelt believed that a president should take a more active role on economics, society, and politics, and with that being said he morphed the progressive era into the government level. Roosevelt created something called a square deal that he offered American businesses and labor, and corporations and their business workers. In the square deal that Roosevelt created, he promised to use the government as a tool to protect people from big businesses. This was a perfect idea for him as a progressive president because the progressives were against big businesses and advocated for the workers. During Roosevelt’s time as president he wanted to make sure that he stayed involved and helped fix whatever problems had been going during his time in office. He started something known as trust-busting which basically was a series of investigative committees that went in and looked for illegal or unethical ties between different businesses. His main goal was to break up these trusts and he became known as the trust buster. Roosevelt also believed that railroads favored big businesses but would raise prices for individual farmers and such, so he tried establishing some rules that railroads had to follow to stop this from happening. These rules among with the others I discussed, make up the square deal. Roosevelt
