Roommates are inevitable for most college students and young adults. With the economy in trouble more and more people are deciding to live with roommates in order to save money. This can often lead to disagreements, feuds, and misery. You can’t always find the perfect roommates but there are some rules everyone should set before moving in together. Recently I conducted a survey. The survey was handed out to thirty college students ranging from the ages of eighteen to twenty-three. In this poll they decided on the ten most important rules that are basic for every living situation. 1) No sex in the common room. This rule was rated number one in all surveys, when asked why this is such a popular rule people simply said it was disrespectful and just plain dirty. 2) Do not have parties while another roommate is attempting to study or trying to sleep. It’s just rude and you would get mad if they did it to you. So lets cut the drama and show some respect. 3) Everyone knows that there is no shortage of parties in college. This rule I found was more popular with boys. And that is the ...
Our literature review consisted of six scholarly articles that were studies done on students who were going into college. The first article that we found focused on how important communication is when it comes to making friends. McEwan & Guerrero (2010) talked about the benefits of communication before getting to know someone. We based our questions off of this article regarding communication in order to find out about roommate interactions.
When you are a senior in high school your main focus is finishing your college applications and if your a girl of course prom, you don't realize you are a year away from entering college and the world of "rape culture". It is said that rape culture exists because we don't believe it does. Rape culture is defined as "an environment in which rape is prevalent and in which sexual violence against women is normalized and excused in the media and popular culture. " We already have an idea that in colleges where sports are glorified that some professors will allow athletes to get away with numerous things from cheating to missing numerous classes, but fraternity events can be high risk for rape. First I will summarize "Fraternities and Collegiate Rape Culture: Why Are Some Fraternities More Dangerous Places for Women?" written by A. Ayres Boswell and Joan Z. Space.
One of the main reasons students feel the need to binge drink is peer pressure. They do this because their peers are doing it and they want to fit in better. College dorm rooms offer many different places for students to drink. Dorm rooms give a great place for a few people to get together, and before you know it “everybody’s doing it”.
As stated by John Garvey “But I believe that intellect and virtue are connected. They influence one another.” (Garvey). Garvey insists that the two genders feed off of each other during the learning process and that one cannot be effective without the other, In other words the same way we see men and women in relationships is the same way the two should be looked at when it comes to the dorms. Many schools worry about students dating and having sexual intercourse, but according to sociologist W. Bradford Wilcox who has done various studies on the matter says that “40%-64% of college students report doing it.” From the numbers we are given we are basically being told that students will find ways to get together if they truly want to, and a case can be made that enforcing such strict rules can make what you are fighting a lot harder to
The hookup culture has become deeply ingrained in the college experience, all across the country students are fulfilling their desires while preserving their autonomy. On the surface the hookup culture doesn’t sound so bad, however, I am going to argue that the hookup culture itself stems from and promulgates problematic societal inequalities. I will develop my claim by first discussing the dominance of the hookup culture and the societal pressure placed on those who don’t want to participate or are unsure about participating in what the culture has to offer. Then, I will illustrate why the general dynamic of the heterosexual hookup is an uneven playing field even for women who actively choose to participate in the hookup culture. Finally,
Move-in day is always remembered as one of the most frenetic and nerve-racking events in a freshman's year. Take into account the lack of space or time for everything that must be purchased, assembled or hung which makes the task that much more annoying. Now think how much harder the day turn out to be when three people are anticipated to fit into a room planned for two. Within a forced triple or what some call a “enhanced double” there contains everything an ordinary double dorm has. The additions in a triple are an extra desk, a wardrobe to serve as a closet, and an added upper bunk bed. "They pack us in like hamsters and do not care if we have space to move or live, just as long as we have a room with a bed," said Jill Torigian, a junior majoring in pre-med (Wojcicki). One of the more exciting parts of moving away from home and going to college is the anticipations to live in the dormitories. Living amongst your new peers is a thrilling experience for freshman. Many former and current students would agree that living in the dorms their freshman year was a memorable part of their ...
Ivy told me in our interview that the frat boys may have felt threatened by Calvin being there because the number of women at the party did not equal the number of guys and they didn’t

College is a life altering experience. It is a place where you leave anything and everything you have ever known, to come to a place where nothing is familiar. The summer before your freshman year of college can be a nerve racking experience. You anxiously wait for the day when the mailman will bring you that envelope that holds your fate. Enclosed in this envelope is the name of your roommate. Your roommate can have the biggest influence on your freshmen year. They can turn into your best friend or your worst enemy. You anticipate the day when you actually get to meet the person you will be living with for the whole year. At Penn State there are no guarantees that you will have anything in common with your roommate at all, and that is a scary thing.

Roommates, they share your room along with many other things that you once had all to yourself. It is understandable that many incoming college students worry about who they got paired to room with. One of the most common things incoming college freshman worry about the most is getting stuck with a bad roommate (Society19). To many students, their room is their personal space and a place where they can unwind and relax after a long and stressful day without any interference from others. This all changes once they have a roommate. Now, a student 's personal space is not so personal anymore because it is also somebody else 's personal space. It is a common occurrence where students are unhappy with the person they were paired to live with. Having a bad roommate has been ranked as one of the top five reasons students give for dropping out of college (Huffington Post). A study done at the University of North Carolina has found bad roommates as one of the biggest stressors for college students (Huffington Post). College students already have enough stress due to classes, financial troubles, and having to live without parents. Add a bad roommate to the mix and that creates more
I have recently been consolidated to a new dorm in Shearer Hall and there are a few problems I would like to address. During and after our consolidation, my roommate and I felt disrespected and unfairly treated. After this experience, I would like to suggest a few policy changes to the current room change and consolidation process. On the evening of February 13th of this semester, my roommate received an email stating we had 72 hours as of the 14th to move out of our current dorm and have it ready for inspection. We were informed that there was a possibility we would be consolidated with another room, or we would have two roommates moved in.
Privacy is extremely important to have in your life and it helps keep you sane! That’s why I am so unbelievably thankful that the bedroom doors in my apartment have locks on them for our own privacy. I have three roommates, so including me, that’s makes for four girls in one tiny apartment space constantly seeing each other every single day. Don’t get me wrong, I love my roommates with all my heart! But, sometimes, you just got to get the heck away from them! Sometimes roommates drive you up a wall, and that has happened many times throughout my first year of living with them. That’s why I love my warm, cozy, and remote bedroom that happens to contain a lock. Insert the heart eyes. My roommates don’t have a key, so there’s no way of them getting in; isn’t that just lovely? Now, I’m no antisocial person who hates hanging out with their roommates. In fact, I hang out with them all the time, and I consider them to be my best friends! But, you know, sometimes you just need that space away from them in order to stay…mentally stable (for lack of better words, of course). Also, my roommates like to be
College students drink and party a great amount. The average student drinks at least three nights a week and that is the weekend. Most sororities and fraternities encourage drinking. The fraternities make their pledges drink and the kids love it. It makes them loosen up and have a good time meeting new people. Drinking is also a good way for students who do not know anybody to meet new people and feel more comfortable when they go into an unfamiliar place with a lot of strangers around. When someone is drunk they feel more comfortable and able to talk to random people they do not know and have a good time. Once someone becomes familiar with certain people or just being drunk around strangers, it becomes a habit and that is when school work starts to not be important anymore. Students who drink start to stop attending classes because they are hung-over, tired because they did not go to bed, or just do not feel like going because they would like to start drinking again. The!
To me a roommate should be respectful of a shared space, somewhat clean and somewhat organized; which was everything that my roommate was not. My general expectation was that we would keep our sides cleaned, we would keep up with laundry so the room didn’t smell like a high school locker room, and that we would just be relatively friendly. I feel as though it isn’t entirely his fault that we ended up being incompatible as I didn’t effectively communicate these issues, but I help up my end of the deal and it is not your roommates job to be your parent and remind you to clean up your messes and do your
