William Shakespeare's works have impacted lives for centuries across the world. Romeo and Juliet, one of his most famous plays, demonstrates various types of love, all have different consequences, but all alike in dignity. Three types of love illustrated by the characters in Romeo and Juliet are familial love, unrequited love, and true love. In his play, Shakespeare uses these types of love to create atmosphere as well as to express their influences on life. These types of love develop this dramatic poetry into unique and compelling literature. One example of love demonstrated in this play is familial love, the natural affection between family members. Familial love is established primarily through Juliet and her father. Due to the fact
He shows concern for her well-being. He expresses the fact that he will miss her if she were to leave, as well as the fact that she should have a say in her future. Likewise, Juliet and her nurse possess a very strong bond, much like that of a mother and a daughter. Nurse is more comfortable with Juliet compared to Lady Capulet. “We must talk in secret:⎯ nurse, come back again;/ I have remember’d me, thou’s hear our counsel.” (1.3 9-10) Consequently, Lady Capulet calls upon Nurse to support her while speaking to Juliet about an awkward and sensitive topic. She expresses her discomfort when alone with her daughter. In other words, the nurse has a closer relationship with Juliet than that of Juliet and her own mother. The nurse is able to speak with Juliet easily while Lady Capulet struggles to do so. Another example of familial love expressed in Romeo and Juliet is present between Romeo and Benvolio. When Romeo begins to distance himself from his loved ones, Benvolio steps up to the challenge and offers to talk to him, instead of his parents: the Montagues. “See, where he comes! So please you, step aside;/ I'll know his grievance, or be much denied.” (1.1 153-154) Cousins Benvolio and Romeo trust each other for support and to keep secrets. Benvolio knows that Romeo would rather open up to him than his parents, which is why he advises them to leave. He provides Romeo with a shoulder to cry on. Juliet, Nurse, Capulet, Romeo, and Benvolio all provide examples of familial love and its variant
Romeo and Juliet is arguably the most famous story about love in literature. This is in part because of the tension caused by the look the different characters have towards what love means and its role in life. These views were very important for the progression of the story. Their different views collided and caused much grief and sorrow for the characters throughout play. Many important events that propelled the story forward would not have happened without the various feelings towards love the characters have and how they felt of and reacted to the other characters’ view on love.
Love is dependent upon the slightest change, but it can cause the utmost drastic consequences. This is the truth of two lovers in William Shakespeare’s furthermost celebrated play, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. In the case of Romeo and Juliet, love is inimical. Romeo comes from the family of Montague while Juliet comes from the family of Capulet. For reasons unknown, these two families are sworn enemies. However, Romeo and Juliet are not. In fact, they are in a secret relationship that only two others know about. The only two that Romeo and Juliet trust, the Nurse and the Friar. While the Nurse, Friar, and Juliet’s father, Lord Capulet, all have good intentions, they are all responsible for the suicides of Romeo and Juliet in the
One of the forms of love Shakespeare indicates is unrequited love. Romeo has fallen deep in love with Rosaline, but he is, “out of her favor where [he] is in love”(Shakespeare.I.i.173). Unrequited love is love that is not returned or reciprocated. Romeo is madly in love with Rosaline who does not love him back. This unrequited love has given dread to Romeo, he feels like he cannot love anyone else again. As a hopeless romantic, Romeo loves the idea of love, but the love he is experiencing is pain through his heart. He realizes that, “love, whose view is muffled still,/ Should without eyes see pathways to his will”(I.i.175-177). Since Romeo has only been surrounded by hate he always tries to look for love. And when he found love he never thought that it would be so painful. He mentions that love is supposed to be blind, but it can still make one do whatever it wants. His feelings towards love causes him to think that love is worthless. Although Rosaline does not love Romeo back, her reason is not that she is stubborn. Rosaline cannot, “be hit/ With Cupid’s arrow. She hath Dian’s wit,/ And, in strong proof of chastit...
' Here's much to do with hate, but more with love.' Act 1 scene 1.
It takes time and dedication to build a strong relationship. By overcoming obstacles and sticking together through hard times relationships grow stronger until both people truly love each other. Some people say they love someone, but do they really? Can you really love someone after only knowing them for a day? John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men is about two men, George and Lennie, who have grown up together and work as a pair to earn money so they can buy their own land. Lennie is extremely strong, and George is incredibly smart. When Lennie gets caught in a dangerous situation with their bosses wife, George does what is best for Lennie to prevent him from
The nurse acts as a parental figure to Juliet, where she cares for her as if Juliet is her own child, and gives advice and help whenever she is in need for it. The nurse believes that Juliet is still gentle and young, therefore is always on the look out for Juliet, making sure she doesn 't get hurt. The nurse 's motherly love is highlighted primarily when, lack of love is shown between Juliet and her mother. Lady Capulet is shown to be neglecting love towards Juliet. This is seen in Act 1 Scene 3, when Lady Capulet sent The Nurse out and they immediately calls her back in as the Nurse knows Juliet so well. “Nurse come back again”. The strong relationship between The nurse and Juliet is so strong, that the Nurse knows Juliet better than her mother. Another factor showing the lack of love is when Juliet uses the word ' 'Madam ' ' formaly towards her mother. This points out that there is no real relationship towards Juliet and Lady Capulet; the only relationship between them is blood and name. Shakespeare portrays a distant and cold relationship between Juliet and lady Capulet. This is juxtaposed with the affectionate and loving relationship between the nurse and Juliet. The nurse helps Juliet to be with her love Romeo, even after knowing they are from feuding families. The Nurse being a Capulet servant has to side with Juliet’s father when she tells her to marry Paris “I think it best you married with the
Romeo and Juliet is known as one of the greatest love stories, but it has its fair share of tragedy as well. The story riddles with themes throughout. Love is the first theme and there is no greater love than the love Romeo and Juliet share. Shakespeare offers his audiences just as much hate as love in Romeo and Juliet. The families of both Romeo and Juliet involve themselves in centuries of feuding. The ongoing feud between the Montagues and Capulets drives Romeo and Juliet into a life of secrecy, which ultimately causes their deaths. Youth is another theme and ties directly to how young both Romeo and Juliet are both in their age and their relationship. The story of Romeo and Juliet uses sex as a theme as well although not in the intimate details of more modern stories. The two lovers concerns are not with the wishes of their warring families, they just want to be together “Deny thy father and refuse thy name / Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn by my love / And I’ll no longer be a Capulet” (2.2.34-36). Love is the first theme Shakespeare displays in this play.
“Romeo and Juliet”, a play composed by William Shakespeare, is about a boy and a girl who are fall in love with each other at first sight, but soon find out that they have fallen in love with the child of their parents enemy. Seeing fate is not on their side due to the ongoing feud between their parents, they are willing to do anything to be together, which unfortunately leads to both of their demise. Many people question if the love between Romeo and Juliet was true. The love between the two was not true because they fell in love with each other’s appearances, they didn’t know each other long enough to actually figure out each other, and they were hardly thinking straight during the relationship.
Another type of love we are exposed to during the same scene is the love of Lady Capulet. Lady Capulet, as well as The Nurse, believes love comes from appearance, both physical and political, and has nothing to do with emotion. She shows this when she speaks favorably of Paris's looks and his nobility. She also shows that it is a superficial love by the way she treats Capulet when she publicly denounces him. “ CAP: What noise is this?

However, Romeo and Juliet, a play written by William Shakespeare, portrays love as a form of passionate and violent force that comes with both rewards and consequences. The tragedy focuses on two young lovers called Romeo and Juliet, whose families are intertwined in an ancient feud that disrupts the peace in Verona, Italy. For love, the two teenagers are driven to overcome obstacles they will never imagine doing, and as a result, they along other family members are forced to pay the price of their lives. Through the play Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare exhibits the reality of young love through the portrayal of the Queen Mab Speech, the impulsive actions taken by both lovers, and the results caused by the powerful nature of their love.

Different Aspects of Familial Love in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet At the time Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet, familial love was very different to what we know it as today. Parents did not have a close relationship with their children. A nurse was often hired by the upper classes to breast feed their children because it was not accepted in polite society. Fathers often arranged marriages for their daughters, who would usually only be about twelve or thirteen years old, Marriages often lacked love.
There is a parental love for Romeo as Lady and Lord Montague worry about where Romeo gets to. They worry about his welfare; they wish to know what he has been doing. So they ask Benvolio to find out as it is unlikely that Romeo will tell them, they want to help him.
