Shakespeare’s play ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is set in Verona Italy. It is a tale of two teenage lovers who risk their lives in order to be united, despite the hatred existing between their families. In both sonnets 116, and the play , love is conveyed as an endless ,everlasting and eternal adventure. Throughout this essay, I aim to evaluate and examine the way the idea of romantic love is presented in Romeo and Juliet and a selection of poetry.
Within sonnet 116, Shakespeare compares true love which is indestructible and long-lasting to false love that is fickle and transient. The judgemental quote “love is not love which alters when it alteration finds, “suggests that love which is defeated by obstacles is not genuine love. The use of repetition in the verb ‘alter’ indicates that true love is invincible whereas fake love is easily manipulated and adapted. Shakespeare uses this linguistic devise in order to prove his statements accuracy and validity, that truthful and adoring love s constant.

The theme of a tempestuous storm allows the audience to imagine a conflict or argument between two lovers. The phrase “That looks on tempest and is never shaken; it is the star to every wandering bark,” suggests that despite conflict the love is able to survive because true love is persistent. Yet when Romeo sees Juliet for the first time, he forgets all about Rosaline and instantly falls for Juliet. In Act 1.5, Romeo is the first to spot Juliet and immediately feels an attraction to her. In addition, Romeo thinks Juliet is very beautiful and convinces her to kiss him without knowing each other. Then in Act 2.1, Romeo pursues Juliet and goes to her balcony and begins to profess his love for her. When Romeo is swearing that he is in love with Juliet, she stops him and says everything is happening so quickly. However, Romeo reassures Juliet and they plan for their marriage.

Friar Laurence tells Romeo that he is acting too fast when Romeo asks for Friar Laurence to marry them. Friar Laurence then asks Romeo, “Is Rosaline, that thou love so dear,/So soon forsaken?” (2.3.67-68). Friar Laurence is wondering if Rosaline, who Romeo was madly in love with a day ago, and was the reason for Romeo’s sorrow and lack of sleep, is now out of his life. Here, the Chorus tells how Romeo loved Rosaline because she was beautiful, but moved onto Juliet because she was prettier. Romeo falls for Rosaline and Juliet both for their looks, before getting to know them.
