There are many similarities and differences in Romeo and Juliet. In this essay i will be sharing a few of them. To start with, Romeo and Juliet takes place in Verona in about 1594, while West Side Story takes places in New York City in 1957. Tony is the modern version of Romeo and Maria is the modern Juliet. A huge similarity is that the major conflict of both books is the opposing families do not agree with the relationship of their child. The resolution of this conflict is tragic in both and results in death for both male lovers. Secondly, a difference would be when Juliet finds her lover Romeo is dead Juliet kills herself, Maria doesn't kill herself but instead she takes out her emotions on the two gangs with a gun. “Do not deny to him that you love me.”(Rom. 4.1 25) Paris, one of Juliet’s suitors, is trying to win Juliet’s love at the same time that Romeo loves her. Together, Paris and Romeo are juxtaposed, while vying for Juliet’s love, so that they are compared and contrasted. Both have similar traits but are different through how they act towards people and personalities. Paris and Romeo are alike in integrity but very different by their personalities and treatment of Juliet.
Romeo and Juliet is a play about two lovers who have to risk their lives in order to demonstrate their love and will to stay together, regardless the feud between their families. By the end, the death of Romeo and Juliet finally bring the reconciliation to these two families. It is fate that the two most shall-not meet people fall in love and it love that eventually won against hatred. Since then, there have been many different versions of Romeo and Juliet, whether it was for film, stage, musicals. These different recontextualised adaptions change the original play by many ways, some modernise the language, environment, props as well as changing the original characteristics of some characters. Out of all the different adaptions of Romeo and Juliet, two stood out the most. One was the Romeo and Juliet (1996) and directed by Baz Luhrmann and the other one was Romeo and Juliet Broadway (2013) play version,

...and Juliet, when they marry, must marry secretly because of the feud. However, Maria and Tony do not marry, although they do perform a mock wedding. Another example of a difference is that Anita purposely tells the Jets that Maria is dead because of her hatred for them. But when Balthasar tells Romeo that Juliet is dead, he does it without knowing that it isn’t true. The last major difference between the two works is the death of the heroine. Juliet kills herself because she knows that her Romeo is dead and she cannot live without him. However, Maria is left alive at the end of West Side Story. It is almost as though she does not die so that she can accuse society of its prejudicial attitude against the Puerto Ricans and reveal everyone’s role in her and Tony’s love story.
Romeo and Juliet is the tragic story of two young, “star-crossed” lovers from feuding families, destined for disaster. The Capulets and the Montagues have an ancient grudge on one another that has been passed down over generations. Unfortunately, Romeo and Juliet end up victims of their families’ vicious loathing. Romeo and Juliet’s story has several intertwining themes such as the aforementioned hatred between the Capulets and Montagues and the revenge Romeo strives for after his friend Mercutio’s death. Also, the love and passion between Romeo and Juliet and the loyalty of Romeo and his friends. Honour and revenge also feature frquently throughout the play including Juliet’s pressure to honour her family, and the revenge Romeo sees as his duty when Tybalt kills Mercutio.
William Shakespeare's "The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet," set in 16th century Verona, Italy shares differences with Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo + Juliet," set in modern day Verona Beach. These stories contain the same characters and conflict, however major and minor discrepancies are galore in the story lines of both formats of William Shakespeare's creation. Some major inconsistencies occur, such as Mercutio dying at a beach, portrayed as a hero, instead of being at a bar, looking like a fool, Friar Lawrence's letter is successfully sent to Romeo by mail carriers, however he does not have the opportunity to read it, unlike in the play version, where Romeo does not get the letter from Friar John, and is told the news by Balthazar, and nobody being at Juliet's tomb to stop Romeo from reaching Juliet, unlike in the play, Paris was there to pay his respects to Juliet. In addition to the major inconsistencies, minor ones are included throughout, such as Romeo and Juliet first seeing each other through a fish tank, then kissing in the elevator, not the dance, the famous balcony scene occurring in a pool, not on an actual balcony, and Juliet pointing a gun at Friar after she points it to herself, threatening to commit suicide. These inconsistencies probably occurred in the play to add a modern and entertaining twist to the Shakespearean classic, leading to the same denouement in both versions of "The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet."
One major difference is the setting. Romeo and Juliet take place in old times in a city in Italy. West Side Story takes place in New York in 1961. This obviously sets up for a lot of differences, for example there were guns and pocket knives in West Side Story. One of the biggest differences in these stories is that Maria does not kill herself in the end unlike Juliet. Since these stories are similar you think Maria is going to kill herself after Tony died but she doesn't. As we know Juliet decided to kill herself after she found out Romeo was dead. The circumstances that Romeo and Juliet and Tony and Maria are in differ in many ways. For example, Romeo and Juliet come from rival families that would not allow them to be together. Tony and Maria, on the other hand, come from families of different backgrounds, which isn’t nearly as bad. Tony and Maria’s parents have no say in whether or not they are together, it is just their friends and gangs that are against it.
The two plays, Romeo and Juliet and Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, have many differences and similarities. Obviously since they were both written by William Shakespeare, then they will have some similarities because a majority of writers have similar traits in how they write each play, novel, movie, etcetera… Romeo from Romeo and Juliet and Brutus from Julius Caesar have an abundant amount of similarities and differences throughout both plays. A majority of the characters had similarities and difference as well, but Romeo and Brutus’s stood out the most to the readers. The love that Maria and Tony have shows their willingness to sacrifice for each other no matter the circumstances. Despite being from two different gangs, Tony and Maria go through great lengths to see their relationship blossom. In the musical, there are several instances when Tony and Maria meet secretly without their friends or families knowing. Understanding the consequences of being caught, they still felt a profound love for each other that could not keep them apart. Maria sacrificed her entire life with her family and friends to run away with Tony. Her love was the priority and nothing else mattered except Tony. Tony was also willing to sacrifice for Maria as he puts her before his family, friendships, and values. Love brought these two together made their relationship strong against the will of others in their lives. Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story share many similar themes. Romeo and Juliet both chronicle a story of overcoming prejudice and hatred, forbidden love, and defying stereotypes that nobody thought could be broken. The two stories are similar in a multitude of ways, even though their settings are centuries apart- Romeo and Juliet set in the 1500’s, and West Side Story set in the 1950’s. Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story both teach a lesson of how prejudice can teach you how to hate, and how one of your rivals may be the one who helps you remember how to love.
Both plays begin with a fight between the rival groups. In both plays, the main characters meet at a dance. Both Juliet and Maria have arranged marriages that they are not happy about. Throughout each play, the main characters are afraid of their families finding out about them seeing each other and frustrated that they have to hide their love. In both plays, when a fight happens, both Romeo and Tony kill their girlfriend 's relative; however in spite of this, both Juliet and Maria forgive them. Romeo and Tony both die at the end of the play. A major difference between these two plays is that in the end of Romeo and Juliet, Juliet kills herself, however in the end of West Side Story, Maria is still alive. While Juliet reacts to the death of her lover by taking her own life, Maria reacts to Tony 's death by causing the fighting gangs to see the consequences of their feuding and find peace with each other. The movie adds a musical twist to the original Romeo and Juliet, which gives the story a lighter look than the original. Instead of bloody fights, the movie puts in dance and singing scenes. The characters are also different because some of them are in relationships, while others even completely change their roles. For example, Bernardo is Maria’s brother in the story, while in the original play Tybalt plays her cousin. The nurse is also not in a relationship with anyone, while Anita is in a relationship with Bernardo and that fact drastically changes the storyline.
In the stories Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, and West Side Story, by Arthur Laurent, the lovers are so similar yet have so many differences. They, Maria, Tony, Romeo, and Juliet, are both working against the odds, each couple has their own go-between, and they all die. Although there are obvious differences with each story such as time setting, problems, events. However, there are some less obvious differences such as what these stories meant in their time and the message these stories send. This essay will cover the differences and similarities.
