Love is a common human emotion, one that we all feel throughout our lives. Many would assume that something so common within our nature must be something easy to interpret, however, love is often misconstrued. Lust, infatuation, and mere ‘crushes’ are often misinterpreted as ‘love at first sight’, when love is truly more than just a physical attraction. Though the definition of love ranges from person to person, and can be different for a multitude of different relationships, romantic love is the most touched upon subject in media. Before the two meet, Romeo merely sees Juliet and he instantly forgets his prior obsession with Rosaline, to obsess over Juliet’s beauty, despite how Romeo spends the beginning of the play, leading up to his encounter with Juliet, pining over Rosaline. It is not until Juliet’s nurse informs the two separately, that they know each other’s names and that the other is from the family of their enemies, yet they believe they are in love with one another, still barely knowing anything about one another. Their relationship is a purely physical one, with little to no depth, as their ‘love’ was only ‘skin-deep’. Similarly to their meeting, Romeo and Juliet’s relationship is a rushed one, starting with a chance meeting, another meeting shortly after, and then marriage, only a day later. This rushed nature of their relationship does not leave for much time for romantic development. They talk of love, but still, neither one knows all that much about the other. However, When Romeo and Juliet truly speak for the first time, after the Capulet party, both still decide to marry a day later, rather than waiting to see if their feelings of ‘love’ are actually love, and not just infatuation. Romeo and Juliet engage in a love that they believe is the one true love. They don’t even know each other and don’t know each others personality so they can only be attracted sexually. Instead of taking things slowly and getting to know each other or on the other hand engage in a type of relationship just to satisfy each others desires they act like they have known each other for a long time and that they can’t live one without the other.
Even though the pair spend less time together, it is enough for them to fall in love. It is clearly true love and there is great intensity in the young lovers’ passion for one another. Love has unlimited forgiveness. As already shown, both Romeo and Juliet are horrified to discover that they are family enemies. Despite this, they both choose to devote their love to each other.
Another factor showing the lack of love is when Juliet uses the word''Madam''formally towards her mother. This points out that there is no real relationship between Juliet and Lady Capulet; the only relationship between them is blood and name. Shakespeare portrays a distant and cold relationship between Juliet and Lady Capulet. This is juxtaposed with the affectionate and loving relationship between the nurse and Juliet. The nurse helps Juliet to be with her love Romeo, even after knowing they are from feuding families.
Romeo and Juliet Although Romeo and Juliet become inextricably smitten with one another, they both enter into the relationship from different perspectives. Their love is strong, but each has their reasons for the intensity of their love. Romeo has just come out of another ?crush?. Despite what many people think, Romeo and Juliet is not a love story; rather a story of desperation and obsession. People have been reading Shakespeare for hundreds of years and several people have mistaken it for a love story, due to the fact that Romeo loves Juliet so much he is willing to kill himself when he finds her supposedly dead; she does the same when she wakes up to find him dead. But in fact, Romeo is more taken aback by her beauty than he is in love with her. Juliet is intrigued by the fact someone could love her because her parents are very unsupportive of her. When the two find each other, they immediately become obsessed, mistaking this for love at first sight.
Romeo and Juliet’s first meeting is very poetic and metaphorical in the play. Their encounter occurs at the Capulets’ party in the evening. Romeo sees Juliet and immediately falls head over heels for her. Once he comprehends his feeling of love for her, he speaks of his admiration for her, praising, “Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight,/ For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night” (1.5.59–60). Romeo then walks over to Juliet at the end of the dance, and him and her begin to exchange words in beautiful sonnet form. While he professes his love for her, he compares himself to a pilgrim and depicts Juliet as a saint, explaining that if he kissed her it would rid him of his sin.
