Romeo And Juliet Research Paper

Everyone has heard of the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet but is it a love story? This story takes place in Verona Italy and talks about a boy named Romeo who was desperate for love and girl named Juliet who didn't want to marry Paris, the man her parents arranged her to get married to. These two individuals fall in love within seconds of seeing each other at a party, and suddenly nothing matters besides that person. They love each other so much to the point where they get married the next day. However, this causes more trouble and ends up with them dead. This so-called “love story” is no love story at all, instead, it’s about kids growing up dealing with situations that they don’t know how to deal with.

Romeo is a Montague and Juliet

is a Capulet. These two families haven’t gotten along and it seems like it never will, therefore making their love forbidden. Throughout the rest of the story these two try to be, however, it causes more madness. During this process, Romeo kills Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt. This ends up with Romeo being outcasted out of Verona. When Juliet hears about this she is heartbroken and confused on why Romeo would do this. Juliet is then forced by her dad to marry Paris. She then goes to Friar Laurence saying that she’s going to kill herself, Friar Laurence doesn’t like that and comes up with a plan. Friar gave her a potion that would make her dead for exactly 42 hours, causing her not to marry Paris. Therefore, during this time Romeo would come and see Juliet so that they could run away and be happy. Unfortunately, Romeo never hears about this plan and when told about the death of Juliet, he’s heartbroken and feels as if nothing matters anymore. Romeo then goes and buys poison and runs over to see the “dead” Juliet. After arriving and fighting Paris to the death, he goes up to Juliet and tells her how much he loves her. He then drinks the poison and dies, just in time as Juliet wakes up to see Romeo dying. She realizes the love of her life is going to die and decides to kill herself too. She tries to kiss Romeo and to consume some poison he just took, but that doesn’t work, and she decides to stab herself ending her life once and for all.
Romeo and Juliet are not in love but merely running away from many troubles that they are facing in their life.

Romeo is getting over the heartbreak of his ex-lover Rosaline. The only reason that he went to the party was to go see Rosaline. We see him say, “I’ll go along…to rejoice in splendor of mine own” (1.3.33) Benvolio gives him advice to “Examine other beauties, “so that his heart doesn’t break again when he sees Rosaline. However, Romeo does this too quickly. Within minutes of arriving at the party, he sees Juliet and immediately falls in love. He says, “Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night.” (1.5.50-51) Romeo goes on to talk about how amazing Juliet is, but is he just saying that to get over Rosaline? Juliet and Rosaline are both part of the Capulet family and both are beautiful. It begs if Romeo even loved Juliet in the first place or just “loving” her for the fact that her looks remind her of Rosaline and gave him a sense of

acceptance.
Juliet is also running away from her own issues. Juliet is being forced to marry a man that she doesn’t love and no matter what she does nothing will change. She hates the idea of marriage and won’t accept marrying that man, When Lady Capulet asks Juliet about what she thought about marrying Paris she replies with, “It is an honor that I dream not of.” However, she got married to Romeo a man she met for less than a day. They met a total of 2 times before they got married. She saw Romeo to escape the confines of her parents. Romeo was outgoing and didn't care about the rules he did what he wanted. Nonetheless, of this matters as her father ends up forcing this marriage upon her. It was as if she was running away from a man she didn't want to be with like how Romeo wanted to get over Rosaline with Juliet.
In the Article, ‘Why is "Romeo and Juliet" by William Shakespeare not considered a love story?’ The author talks about how the story, although being romantic in some respects, isn’t a love story but more of a tragic story.

Romeo and Juliet “were victims of their hormones, who died before they had TIME to fall in love.” (McCauley) This was a relationship built on lust rather than love. Romeo and Juliet were both too young to understand what love was and didn't know the difference between liking someone and loving someone. They only met twice before getting married it seems a bit extreme to love someone that fast. What they thought was love was just them ignoring their problems and covering them up. In the poem “Weird” by Hanson, it describes how people may feel weird about things and what it feels like. This poem directly relates to how Romeo and Juliet are feel during this situation. These two are going through issues of their own and don’t know how to handle them since they’re so young. They feel like nothing is going their way, “Hoping that my luck will change,” (Hanson) so when they met each other they’re “reaching for a hand that can understand someone who feels the same.”

Many may say that the death scene shows how Romeo and Juliet love each other, but does it ? In the article, “Mind Over Pop Culture: Romeo and Juliet” talks about how suicide is portrayed in a positive fashion in the story. The article explains how the teens were clearly depressed, however Shakespeare presented the information in a way where it glorified suicide. Shakespeare made it look romantic but it Romeo and Juliet were struggling and were too young to know what to do about it. They were unable to handle the situation that they were faced with. Not knowing how to deal with their emotions and many other issues in their life. As MHA puts it, “Both families use their children to set up alliances without seeing what they want, leading to a very palpable lack of control that the teens face.” The families were using their children to form new alliances and to see which family could overpower each other. In the case of Capulets, they were using Juliet to expand their relations and to gain more power, and the Montagues would’ve done the same. This feeling of not feeling in control of your life would put some stress onto the lives on teenagers and could cause them to do things like this.
In conclusion, Romeo and Juliet is a story about teenagers growing up and dealing with situations they couldn’t handle. They didn’t love each other, they mistook attraction for love, were using this love to escape the many hardships they were facing. Romeo and Juliet were not a love story at all, it was a tragedy who two young kids took their lives over something they convinced themselves to believe in.
