In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Romeo says, “ I take thee at thy word. / Call me but love, and I’ll be new baptized. / Henceforth I never will be Romeo” (2.2.50). Romeo shows that he is willing to give up anything for Juliet’s love for in this quote he is giving up his name to be with her. As the play progresses, they realize that their love comes at a higher price.In Romeo and Juliet, there are family love, friendship, and romantic love.
One type of love seen in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is family love. The first instance of family love is when Juliet meets Romeo at the Capulet’s feast and falls in love with him. After the Nurse tells her that the man she kissed was a Montague, Juliet states,

For a very long time there has been a feud between the Capulet and Montague families, and for Juliet to fall in love with the son of the other family, is a disgrace,, especially when she is not considering Paris, who the Capulets think is a very suitable suitor for Juliet, as a possible mate. One example of romantic love is when Benvolio tries to get Romeo to attend Capulet’s feast so he can meet other girls to compare Rosaline to. Romeo responds, “ One fairer than my love? The all-seeing sun / Ne’er saw her match since first the world begun” (1.2.94-95). In the beginning of the play, Romeo is madly in love Rosaline. The fact that she does not love him back gets him depressed, and he starts to seclude himself from his friends and family. In addition to the first example, is the scene where Benvolio, Mercutio, and Romeo crash Capulet’s feast. After seeing a beautiful lady, Romeo states, “ It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night / Like a rich jewel in an Ethiope’s ear, / Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear” (1.5.42-43). At the Capulet’s feast, Romeo meets this new love interest and forgets about Rosaline. Later on in the play, Juliet falls in love with Romeo, and they soon get married.
