Love and hate are on completely polar ends of the emotional spectrum, yet the extremities of these opposites portray both to be blinding, overwhelming, and powerful. However, the imposing passion found in these two emotions prove to be hazardous and predictable, inevitably ending in calamity. In Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, the forbidden relationship between Romeo and Juliet is constantly jeopardized by the conflicting emotions of love and hate between various characters that surround them. Since love and hate are such fundamental aspects of society, it brings about the most significant question: Can anybody escape the wretched fate love and hate will surely deliver? Before Romeo meets Juliet, he believes he loves Rosaline, but she is completely out of his reach. Likewise, Paris is a handsome and very confident in himself, and he believes that Juliet loves him. Ironically, she is already out of his reach because she is already married and actually hates him because he is a hindrance to her relationship with Romeo. Paris may be a flower, but Romeo is a rose, which symbolizes that he is “the One” for Juliet. The courtly love that Romeo and Juliet have emphasizes the true love they find together, and it signifies the moment when both finally know what they truly want, which is each other, and how deeply they are in love: “My bounty is as boundless as the sea/ My love as deep; the more I give to thee/ The more I have, for both are infinite” (2.2). They will do anything to stay together, and it shows the newfound courage they find within themselves, and the strength they give to one another. Juliet faces her worst fears for Romeo, Romeo risks his life to visit Juliet in her garden, and both kill themselves so they can be together for eternity, which shows that wholehearted yet burdensome sacrifice is necessary for love to be
