William Shakespeare’s “Romeo & Juliet,” is arguably the most widely known tragic love story of all time. Although it has been the subject of debate and controversy, it has inspired many love stories in recent times. One of the most controversial details of the play, are the relationships that Friar Lawrence and Nurse, have with Romeo and Juliet. Many argue that they were not being responsible with their actions regarding Romeo and Juliet’s marriage. Others say that their actions were justified, because the two teens trusted them. Nurse and Friar Lawrence did not do the “right thing” in this situation, and contributed to the events which eventually led to the death of Romeo and Juliet.
Nurse betrayed the trust of both Juliet and her parents. Firstly, as an authority figure in the family, Nurse should not have arranged the meetings regarding their marriage between Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, is a tragic love story about two young lovers who are forced to be estranged as a result of their feuding families. The play is about their struggle to contravene fate and create a future together. As such, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood would try and emulate Shakespeare’s masterpiece. This had been done before in many films. Prominent among them were, Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 “Romeo and Juliet” and Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 “William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.” Both films stay true to the themes of Shakespeare’s original play. However, the modernised Luhrmann film not only maintains the essence of Shakespeare’s writings, Luhrmann makes it relevant to a teenage audience. This is done through the renewal of props and costumes, the reconstruction of the prologue and the upgrading of the setting, whilst preserving the original Shakespearean language. Out of the two, it is Luhrmann who targets Romeo & Juliet to a younger audience to a much larger extent than Zeffirelli.

The Nurse’s job is take care of Juliet and raise her; however, upon learning that Juliet is romantically involved with their family’s enemy, she doesn’t provide any form of counsel to Juliet.” I must another way, To fetch a ladder by the which your love Must climb a bird 's nest soon when its dark.” (2.5.77-79). The Nurse aides Romeo by telling him a way to Juliet’s room showing her approval of the relationship. She did not provide any form of counsel to Juliet or inform Capulet or Lady Capulet about Juliet’s relationship. Due to the fact that the Nurse does not do her job and doesn’t tell Juliet to end her relationship with Romeo, it caused this ill-fated relationship to continue. To add to the issue, the Nurse later betrays Juliet when Juliet begs her for help. “I think you are happy in this second match, For it excels your first, or, if it did not, Your first is dead, or 'twere as good he were, As living here and you no use of him.” (3.5.226-238). The Nurse goes against her previous actions and expects Juliet to forget about Romeo by dispraising him. She is extremely trustworthy and kind, and really does want the best for Juliet. The Nurse also demonstrates her caring character through doing odd deeds for Juliet. On the night that Romeo and Juliet meet and fall in love, Romeo goes to Juliet’s house and talks to her in private. They fall in love even more, and Romeo decides that he wants to get married to Juliet. Juliet hesitates slightly, saying that this was all happening too fast, so she decides to send her Nurse tomorrow to make sure that Romeo’s words were true: “. . . Pray you, sir, a word; and, / as I told you, my young lady bid me enquire you out” (Shakespeare 2.4.149-150). Juliet’s parents would never help out as much as the Nurse. They would never have gone to Juliet’s lover and tried to figure out if his words were true or false. That is why the Nurse is more of a parent to Juliet than her actual parents. Juliet can count on her to do anything for her. Lastly, the Nurse shows how much she cares for Juliet during the Tybalt-Romeo dilemma. When Juliet asks for advice on this, the Nurse considers the options, as Romeo was banished, and that is a big issue. Troubled, Juliet runs to Friar Lawrence for a solution to get out of the arranged marriage. Friar, then advises Juliet to tell her father that she will marry Paris. Subsequently he hands her a potion that will make her look as if she is a corpse for forty-two hours. The Nurse helps Juliet to marry Romeo because she is just thinking about Juliet’s feelings without thinking about the problems this marriage could cause. In Act I, Scene. v., lines 137-138, she tells Juliet who Romeo is. It causes Juliet to get very upset: “My only love, sprung from my only hate.'; (I.V.139), but the Nurse doesn’t think about this. She doesn’t see the trouble that has started. After the nurse realizes that Juliet and Romeo love each other, she doesn’t stop it; instead, she agrees to carry the message to Romeo, although she knows Romeo is a Montague.
