This is exemplified through the ending death scene of Romeo and Juliet, where their passionate love interferes with their individual existence. In particular, Zeffirelli uses close-up camera shots, displaying Romeo’s expression of deep sorrow, with tears clearly visible and his head bowed down when he believes Juliet’s supposed death. Both Luhrmann and Zeffirelli reveal from the ending death scene of their interpretations of Romeo and Juliet and the strictness of the houses forcing them to result to death to be together. Consequently, illustrating Shakespeare’s message that providing risks are forcing them to be secretive, impulsive love can often lead to tragedies.

An important idea in this play is that of the impetuosity of youth and the rash decisions that young people may make. This idea is continuously brought up throughout the play and is explored through the concepts of overreacting and being blinded by anger, desperation in forbidden love and taking your life for love.
However, the largest thing changed was the fate. In the end, when Romeo was about to die, Juliet wakes up but doesn’t have time to stop Romeo from taking the poison; whereas the King production, Romeo dies before Juliet wakes up. The purpose of Juliet to wake up before Romeo dies is to engage the audience and leave the audience with a sense of pity for the two lovers. In this scene, Romeo, crying, says “The doors of breath, seal with a righteous kiss…” From the quote, fate was highlighted due to the reason that Romeo says that he will seal the doors of breath, meaning that he will kill himself; yet, after he has said this, Juliet’s hand moves, but Romeo did not see. What engages the audience more is the dramatic irony, when the audience knows that Juliet is alive but Romeo doesn’t. This is the major method that the Luhrmann production recontextualises the

Baz Lurhmann’s creation of the film Romeo and Juliet has shown that today’s audience can still understand and appreciate William Shakespeare. Typically, when a modern audience think of Shakespeare, they immediately think it will be boring, yet Lurhmann successfully rejuvenates Romeo and Juliet. In his film production he uses a number of different cinematic techniques, costumes and a formidably enjoyable soundtrack; yet changes not one word from Shakespeare’s original play, thus making it appeal to a modern audience.
Zeffirelli’s ultimate goal for his version of Romeo and Juliet was to capture Shakespeare’s original intentions for the play while targeting the teenage audience of his generation. Luhrmann’s intentions were different however; he changed the way an audience looks at Shakespeare’s masterpiece by modernising the props, costumes, and sets. Obviously, to match film time quotas Zefirelli and Luhrmann has both cut many lines out of the play.
Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet is a film that converts Shakespeare’s famous play into a present-day setting. The film transforms the original texts into modern notions, whilst still employing Shakespearean language. Compared to Franco Zeffirelli’s adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, Luhrmann’s picture is easier for a teenage audience to understand and relate to because of his modernisations. Despite the passing of four centuries Shakespeare’s themes of love, hate, violence, family and mortality remain the same regardless of the setting.
The pace in which the The film goes very fast and it changes from one location to the next in a sequence of images, which occurs a lot during this recent film. In Franco Zeffirelli’s adaptation of the film, there are very similar. settings as they are both set in Verona but they have a different timescale and time period in which the film was produced. Reckless actions lead to untimely deaths. In Shakespeare’s tragedy “Romeo and Juliet”, both protagonists fight for their hopeless love. Bloodshed and chaos appear inevitable in fair Verona; Romeo and Juliet come from enemy households, the Montegues and the Capulets, who have sworn to defeat one another. The young and handsome Romeo weeps over his unrequited love for Rosaline, until he lays his eyes on Juliet. Strong and independent, Juliet seeks to escape her family’s will to marry her off to Paris, a kinsman of the Prince. Fate ties these adolescents’ lives together binding them to witness the ill-fortunes of Romeo and Juliet’s love. Romeo and Juliet prove themselves woefully impulsive through their words and actions, which ultimately lead them along a series of unfortunate mishaps.
Luhrmann’s 1996 Romeo and Juliet is compelling when communicating the main ideas of the play by providing the audience with a modern translation of the play using the motifs in the film which correlate to the play.
The environment surrounding the star-crossed lovers in the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet can influence audiences who may interpret the scenes in different ways. The audience can be greatly affected in their interpretation of the story by the mise-en-scene, costuming, and the hidden symbolic meaning. This great piece of literature was edited in two unique and intriguing forms, one Zeferelli directed which was filmed in 1968, and the modern version produced in 1996. The different scenes throughout the length of the party were the most influential to me in that I saw how different these movies were directed, and the different meaning I experienced from watching these movies. Focusing on the environment of the scenes and the costuming helped me in my interpretation, because I found hidden symbolism from these two qualities.

Each film was directed by different but equally professional directors to allow the audience to understand the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. The scene I am going to analyse is the party scene when Romeo and Juliet meet for the first time. The first film being discussed was directed by Baz Luhrman in 1996; an Australian director who loves to spice up his films to keep the audience on their feet. The second film was directed by Carlo Carlei in 2013; an Italian master mind of directing who prefers to stay true to his films and become one with the audience and the story being told. Romeo and Juliet is a play about two adolescents—Romeo and Juliet from two hostile families fall in love with each other. This prohibited love ultimately turns into a romantic tragedy, in which they commit suicide for each other. Both Franco Zeffirelli’s (1968) and Baz Lurhmann’s (1996) versions retained the dialogues written by William Shakespeare in their movies. However, these two movies are directed in their own unique ways, which have several distinctive differences.
The tragic play, Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, tells the story of two young people that fell in love. Shakespeare states that his play is about, “A pair of star-crossed lovers take their lives ;”(1.Prologue.6) The play took place in Verona, Italy, where two royal families, the Montagues and Capulets, go through a huge fight, which causes a tragic ending. William Shakespeare does a wonderful job taking the reader into the fight throughout the story. Romeo, a Montague, got invited to a ball in the Capulet’s household, and that’s where everything began. Romeo met the love of his life at the ball, but little did he know, he was giving up his life to be with her. Throughout the play, Romeo and Juliet go through a lot of issues together; which leads to them killing themselves, in hopes of staying together forever. Although the two killed themselves, they are not to blame for their deaths. In the play, Friar Lawrence and the Nurse should both be punished, and Romeo should be pardoned for his actions.
