William shakespeare presented the play “Romeo and Juliet” in the 1590’s. The movie Romeo + Juliet was in theatres by 1968. The play was the first of kind being both tragedy and romance. The movie was the same but with a modern twist. They had guns, cars, and many more changed props. The movie however was different in many ways because of the director, baz luhrmann, and his decisions. Even with their differences they still have the same basic story line. Romeo and juliet fall in love and realize that they are enemies which interferes with their love in many tragic ways. The first major difference is the character paris. He shows quite a bit in the play but only twice in the movie. He shows up at the capulet's party then when he asks for juliet's hand in marriage. He also isn’t seen at the tomb of juliet and isn’t killed by romeo or even killed at all. The props had been changed to from swords and horses to guns and cars. This was changed to match the time period of the movie. The director had changed the ages and ethnicities of some of the actors. They changed the ages because you it would’ve been inappropriate for the time of the movie. The prince of verona was no longer a prince but instead was a sheriff. The first similarity is that it's still in shakespearean. This means that the way they speak in the play and in the movie are the same so all the lines are the same. The director also did not alter the overall plot. Lovers, Romeo and juliet, from two feuding families are conflicted with their families problems which keep them from being together. This ends up in a plan to deceive one family into thinking that juliet had died which in turn would allow her to go live with romeo who had been exiled. This plan results in romeo not knowing what is going on and thinking juliet is actually dead and kills himself and when juliet finds out he had died she kills herself
