The play “Romeo and Juliet” by the great William Shakespeare is a tale of love, hate and ultimately death written nearly 500 years ago. In this essay i will be explaining my reasons on why Romeo and Juliet should be included into 9th grade curriculum.
My first reason explaining why Romeo and Juliet should be in 9th grade curriculum is the sophisticated language that is used to portray the intense feelings of Romeo, Juliet and many other characters. In all of the acts they introduce a new set of words that people of the 21st century never or rarely use like perjuries and usurer.
The next reason why i think Romeo and juliet should be included into 9th
grade curriculum is its use of quotes and hidden meanings.`In act 2, scene 2 Romeo compare Juliet to the sun and her eyes to two bright stars. Another Hidden meaning that was important was the scene when the Friar is looking at plants and starts talking about the bads and goods of the plants, I think the hidden meaning is that instead of plants the friar is talking about humans. The last reason why it should be a part of 9th grade curriculum is its way that it portrays many feelings for a book. The wedding shows love and happiness while the death scenes show a darker side of this love story. In conclusion i think that Romeo and Juliet is a perfect book for the 9th grade mind. It uses a mixture of different literary elements that come together perfectly.
William Shakespeare wrote 37 plays in his life, with his best and most famous being Romeo and Juliet. This play is over 450 years old and since then has been made into a movie over 25 times and performed all around the world. Through the wide variety of themes, Romeo and Juliet still appeals to teenagers in the 21st century. Adolescents can still relate to 3 themes in Romeo and Juliet: relationships, parental control, and bullying, which applies to teenagers in the 16th century and the 21st century.
Who would be willing to die for their loved ones? Romeo and Juliet would and did. Romeo and Juliet’s love and death brought two families together who could not even remember the origin of their hate. When the parents saw what their children's love for each other, they realized that their fighting had only led to suffering and insoluble conflict. Romeo and Juliet loved each other to an extent that they killed themselves rather than live apart. They did it with no hiatus. Juliet says before she kills herself, “O happy dagger, This is thy sheath. There rust and let me die.”( 5, 3, 182-183) demonstrating how she would rather die than not be with him.
William Shakespeare composed the tragedy Romeo and Juliet in the 16th century. This play vividly portrayed the banned love between the heirs of two families. Spoiler alert, Romeo and Juliet killed themselves in the end. Every person in Romeo and Juliet held responsibility for their death. Among all of the characters, Friar Lawrence and Capulet were major catalysts of the casualties. Let's not forget Romeo, the one that started it all.

It is a story of forbidden love in which a young couple are torn apart by their families’ feud in Renaissance Italy; the play’s tragic ending has both main characters die. Many aspects of this play have sparked a heated debate: is Romeo and Juliet a tragedy or is it simply tragic? Some critics claim that the play lacks elements that are necessary for a tragedy. Yet Aristotle explicitly states the essential components of a tragedy in his Poetics, and Romeo and Juliet meets those requirements. Romeo and Juliet can be considered an Aristotelian tragedy because of Romeo’s impetuousness, Juliet’s loyalty to Romeo, and the play’s peripeteia.
“O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?” This quote is the epitome of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet; It shows Juliet’s desire to be with Romeo. Romeo and Juliet has always been taught in high school since the time that it was published in 1597, for it is relatable and the two main characters are the same age as their primary audience. However, Romeo and Juliet should be discontinued from the 9th grade curriculum. The play’s characters are often misunderstood by the students that are reading it, so why teach something if it is not accurate? Romeo and Juliet pose as the main example of what a couple should be, but the truth is that they are a very unrealistic couple. Romeo sets a bad example to the teenagers reading about him by promoting lustful desires and behaviors.
Good intention will not always lead to a happy ending. When one thinks that they have made a good moral decision, the outcome may differ from the forethought. In Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet, many characters thought they were helping the lovers but in fact, they were only assisting them in taking their own lives. Friar Lawrence’s good intention of marrying Romeo and Juliet led to the deaths of Mercutio, Paris, and Romeo and Juliet.
Shakespeare’s original play, Romeo and Juliet reflected the important Elizabethan concerns in relation to authority, law and order, making it relevant to the audiences’ morals and values of the time, as well appealing and entertaining.
In the tremendous play of ‘Romeo & Juliet’, Shakespeare’s ways engages the audience straight away. The astounding methods he uses hooks the audience into the play and allows them to read on, wondering what will happen. The tragic love story of Romeo & Juliet, as mentioned in the prologue, sets a variety of themes throughout Act 1 Scene 5. Many of the recognisable themes are: youth and age, revenge, forbidden love, fate, action and hate. The main idea of the play is a feud that had been going on between two families, The ‘Montagues and Capulets’, the son of the Montagues and the daughter of the Capulets fall in love and the story tells us how tragic, death, happiness and revenge find them throughout the play.
