Romanticism has four main elements or ideas. To begin with one element of romanticism is Human Potential. Human Potential has to do with the comparison of good and evil within a character. It shows a character 's ability to adapt to certain situations or circumstances. Also another element of romanticism is Individualism. Individualism helps the reader understand a character 's emotions. It reads into how the reader acts and the reasons they act the way they do. It also helps the reader understand if what the character did was internal, intrinsic, instinctive or intuitive. Even more another element is Figurative or Deeper meaning. First of all Poe used Human Potential in his work The Tell-Tale Heart. In The Tell-Tale Heart the character killed a man because the man’s eye bothered him. This shows his human potential for evil because only someone truly evil would kill someone because their eye bothered them. Also Poe showed Human Potential in The Black Cat. In the Black Cat the character kills his wife because she got in the way of him killing this cat that drove him mad and then he proceeds to bury her in a wall. This shows his Human Potential for evil again because once again only an evil person could do a crime such as this. Even more Poe shows Human Potential in the Raven. In the Raven there is a part in the poem he says “It shall clasp a sainted maiden whom the angels named Lenore- Clasp a rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore” it talks about a character asking a bird if he will see this loved one again. This shows the Human Potential for sadness because the character has to be extremely swamped with sorrow to ask a bird if he will see someone again. Human Potential isn’t the only element Poe used. Another Element Poe used in his works was Individualism. To begin with Poe shows individualism in the Raven. In the Raven the character shows individualism in his depression over his loss of a loved one because he is showing his internal feelings. On the contrary he also showed Individualism in the Black cat. The character talks …show more content…

Within the story The Black Cat the character that has committed awful crimes sees a white mark resembling the gallows on a cat 's chest. This shows Figurative or Deeper Meaning because of all the things that tuff of white hair on the cat 's chest represents it was the gallows which could be inferred as the character seeing his future. Finally in Poe’s work the Tell-Tale Heart he also shows Figurative or Deeper Meaning. In the story the Tell-Tale Heart the character is disgusted by an old man’s eye he refers to as to one of a vultures. Which shows Figurative or Deeper meaning because when you think of Vulture’s you think of a bird that preys and eats on dead things. And the character creeps on this old man until he kills him. Poe used Figurative or Deeper Meaning but once again it was not the only element he used. To conclude the elements that Poe used he also used Imagination. To begin with one work Poe used imagination in is the Black Cat. With in the story the Black Cat there is a character who let a cat drive him so mad he killed his wife, and then the cat gave him away to the police by hiding in the wall meowing where the character hid his wife. This shows Imagination because of the cat 's unique characteristic no one would think about a cat as manipulative as Poe made him sound in this story. Also Poe showed Imagination in the Tell-Tale Heart. The character in the Tell-Tale heart talks about how much
