Roman Houses
Roman houses evolved from the thatched-roof huts of the original roman civilization to the great villas of the late empire. Roman houses were not only built in Italy. There were Roman houses built in Greece, Africa, and Britain.
Roman houses were one story high, the villas of the wealthy were sometimes two. Walls were built of cement covered in stucco or sun-dried bricks which were commonly used until the beginning of the first century B.C. Although the concrete walls were weatherproof, they were usually faced with stone or burned bricks. The walls could also be covered with fine white marble stucco to give it a brilliant finish. Some windows were provided with shutters, which slid in a framework on the outer wall. The ceilings were vaulted and painted in brilliant colors. The roofs varied, with some flat and some sloped. The earliest roof was a thatch of straw, later replaced by shingles and finally tiles. Floors were covered with marble tiles. Smaller houses floors were covered thickly with small pieces of stone, brick, or pottery and pounded down. In two story houses the upper floor was made of wood, sometimes with a layer of concrete on top. Doors were richly paneled wood carved, or plated with bronze. Usually curtains were preferred instead. Sometimes larger houses had an open court in front of the door, called a vesibulum, with pavement from the door to the street.
Roman villas were divided into public and private spaces. The private spaces were bedrooms, the kitchen, and servant quarters. The masters office or study called the tablinum was also located in the private section. A large chest was kept there chained to the floor containing money and valuables. The main room in the house was the atrium, a windowless room with a space in the ceiling through which rain fell into. The rain fell into a hollow space called the impluvian. There were four types of atrium: Tuscan (in which the roof was supported by two pairs of beams that crossed each other at right angles, testrastylon (in which four pillars supported the roof beams at the corners of the opening in the ceiling) displuviatum (in which the roof sloped down to the walls) and the testudinatum. Later the atrium was reduced to being a reception room.
For lighting public rooms there were tall stands from which numerous lamps could be hung.
...lling device, which was opened up usually in the summertime, the ceiling however was covered in fabric from wall to wall.
From about 50 BCE to the year 200 CE, the Roman Empire was a powerful nation. Rome was the city that became the center of the Roman Empire and by 200 BCE Rome became a powerhouse. The Romans conquered Scotland to Spain, controlled the Mediterranean Sea, and established colonies in North Africa, the Middle East, and Asia Minor. By the year 44 BCE Julius Caesar became a Roman Emperor and Rome had a great military. Then around the 5th century CE the Roman Empire began to weaken. The primary reasons for the fall of Rome was because of the Roman Emperors, the Roman Army, and foreign invasion.
The tablinum served as the main reception room where the masters of many houses would carry out their day-to-day business. The house might have had a tablinum at one point but was probably altered in the middle of the 1st century, eliminating the tablinum, allowing visitors to pass directly into the peristyle from the atrium. (Guzzo, 1998: 59)... ... middle of paper ... ... ary enough in itself, of a civilization miraculously preserved under the ashes of a volcano, had the power to capture men's imaginations.
Having clean water supplies meant that the public did not have to use the same water for different jobs. For example they did not have to use the same water they showered in to do the same cooking. The Romans had also built a more advanced sewage system for the time. The Roman houses were built by stone which meant they would stay up for a long time. The Roman houses also had heated floors.
In Rome the buildings were constructed under Roman Empire. The Roman Colosseum was constructed between 69 to 79 CE by the Vespasian emperor, The Circus Maximum was built in the 2nd century B.C by the high emperor, in 31 B.C the fire destroyed it that led Emperor Augustus to rebuild the Circus in 82 AD, Ludus Magnus was a gladiatorial training school in Rome and it was originally built between 81-96AD by Emperor Domitian. The emperor’s theme was large public stone buildings that would bring the people of Rome together and also the emperor was rich and they had manpower. The emperors also patron towards the workers and also to prove that they are the great leaders. The emperors had money, a lot of workers to build the buildings to the Emperor’s satisfaction. The buildings were used by the public as entertainment where they would go and watch all sorts of races & fights.
Stone, marble and brick were used to repeat the geometrical forms and patterns to give the proportion in the spaces. The Medici Chapel uses the patterns on the floor to create a system of proportion that connects to the space. The plastered stucco walls are articulated by pilasters and trim of grey sandstone. The pilasters are wider and stronger. They press in the marble panels designed for the funerary monuments. From the exterior of the building, one could see that the chapel is a mass of masonry. It is called the “New Sacristy” but it had never functioned as a sacristy because, it was a funeral chapel for the Medici
There were many reasons that led to the decline of Rome. rome was once a large empire in Europe, Africa, and Asia. in 117 CE, Rome was at its peak and was the strongest empire in the world. Just a few centuries later, the empire no longer existed. The roman empire collapsed because it was colossal, emperors were dying left and right, and a very common laziness roamed the lands.
Rome was a tremendous civilization that we got many ideas from. They eventually fell, but left their mark in the list of great civilizations. They had three main reasons of why they fell and those were foreign invasions, weak military, and weak leadership.
The engineering discoveries of ancient Rome have played a key role in the history of architecture and engineering. Many of Rome’s roadways, bridges, and aqueducts have been in use from the first century until the twentieth century. Many American buildings have used the Roman dome. Several major structures from early Rome still stand, including the Collosseum. These remnants of feats of Roman engineering stand as a monument to the ability of ancient Roman builders.
Everybody has heard of one the greatest falls of all times, the fall of the Roman Empire, but not many people know the real reasons why Rome may have came crashing down. Rome began to fall and stall, everywhere around Rome was falling also. Rome, we can say, was one of the greatest empires there was because of the size of their empire, the size of their government and strength of their army, but there was a problem. The Roman Empire fell, why? Out of the many reasons, in my opinion, foreign invasions, natural disasters, and the assassinations of its emperors, were the biggest reasons.
Building materials for housings in Roman and post-Roman times. Ward-Perkins begins by comparing the tiles used for roofing to pottery and how they were made in a similar process and sold like pottery. He discussed how tiles used in Roman times were common like pottery, and after post Roman time, the building material began to change, “. Every one of the building crafts introduced by the Romans, the mundane as well as the luxury ones, disappeared completely during the fifth century. All new buildings in the fifth and sixth centuries, whether in Anglo-Saxon or unconquered British areas, were either roofed in wood or thatch” (Ward-Perkins, 108).
A home is a place to call one’s own. It is used for social interactions, shelter, and daily human maintenance. Houses also play a role in social structure. A person can be defined by the type of house they have because it symbolizes their income. This rule is active in modern and ancient civilizations. In Rome, housing was used to symbolize wealth and power: the bigger the house, the higher the status. Housing has always been a symbol of income and importance. In ancient Rome, this stereotype plays a significant role in society. Housing area and type outlined social classes, thus dividing the roman citizens and emphasizing different social groups.
Throughout history, there have been several significant architectural movements. The last, and perhaps most enduring movement is that of Classic Greece. Although for centuries, the architecture of ancient Greece has been admired, mimicked, and replicated, its beginnings are somewhat surprising to one unfamiliar with the history of the region. It is important to understand the history and mechanics of Classic Greek architecture in order to fully appreciate its form, function, and beauty. “Ancient Greek architects strove for the precision and excellence of workmanship that are the hallmarks of Greek art in general. The formulas they invented as early as the sixth century B.C. have influenced the architecture of the past two millennia” (metmuseum.org).
I visited the Art Institute Chicago to learn about Greek and Roman Art on October 7, 2014. It was really fascinating to view the different types of art of Greek and Roman cultures. I learned about Greek pottery, Roman glass, coins of different emperors, and various sculptures. It helped me to understand more about the class material by letting me imagine the people during those times, the lifestyle conditions that they were experiencing, and how they communicated and essentially wrote history through art.

The Roman Colosseum has a rich history, and remains a prized possession of the Roman citizens.
