Gladiator Gladiatorial events were a token of the Roman civilization. A brutal form of sacrifice adapted from the earlier civilization of Etruscans, who believed when a person dies, his spirit relies on a blood sacrifice to survive in the afterlife. The first event to take place in Rome was in 264 BC, when Decimus Brutus held a sacrifice to honor his dead father (Roman Gladiator). Soon after these events became an undeniable part of the Romans lives, used for political power and general entertainment. A gladiators life was far from easy. Most were slaves, prisoners of war, or hardened criminals, therefore they were not free men. Often times they were trained and forced to take part in the events, hoping for their freedom if they were to conquer their grim fate and survived for a few years (wik). This was depicted in the most recent movie GLADIATOR. In this film Russel Crowe Maximus' starts out as an army general under Marcus Aurelius, until Commudus murders his own father out of spite for his fathers loyalty to Maximus and not him. He then inherits the title of king, and condemns Maximus to a gruesome fate as a slave/gladiator. Though this doesn't sound like the ideal life, to some at the time is was an appealing, so much so that some free men degraded themselves so they could battle in the games. Was it for basic living? Possibly but more than likely it was for the Fame and Prestige of a Gladiator. These free men were known as Professional gladiators. Training was hard for these great warriors, they often trained at special gladiator schools, the largest of which was connected to the great Coliseum by underground passages. Here they learned how to fight skillfully with swords, daggers, nets, chains, and an... ... middle of paper ... ...m. This huge circular arena was the pinnacle of the Roman Gladiatorial games, and though it isn't fully intact, it is a great reminder of ancient culture. Though today these games seem inhumane and unnecessary, to their ancient culture it was a vacation from everyday stress. Even the Emperor was said to understand that though money and grain would satisfy and individual, large spectacles were necessary for the contentment of the masses' (wes civ). Works Cited 1. The story of Gladiator takes place in Ancient Rome and contains intense action, great acting, and fantastic storytelling. Although most of this action drama is mostly fictitious, some certain events and characters appear in the history books.
The culture of Ancient Rome had a distinct way to entertain its citizens. Besides spending times at the baths, Romans found pleasure and delight in the games held at the local coliseum. These games were among the bloodiest displays of public amusement in the history of man. Professional wrestling and boxing today, do not come close to the disgusting horrors that the people of Rome took so much pleasure in observing. Although the games were very bloody and extremely brutal, often killing many men and animals, the Romans enjoyed the scenery of life and death being very near. Watching men fight and eventually die a dreadful death, is what fascinated the Roman population in great degree as the games were one of their favorite ways to spend their leisure time. The ancient Romans had a very bloodthirsty taste for entertainment exhibited in the form of gladitorial combat.

Roman gladiators are often recalled when thinking of the Roman civilization for several reasons, including the extreme brutality of the gladiatorial games that took place. These games took place at funerals and ceremonies, as an offering of blood.
Over the course of 668 years, gladiatorial fights were a significant part of some Roman’s lifestyle in Ancient Rome; there were many important gladiators that made a huge impact, such as Spartacus, who led the slave revolt in 73 B.C.E.. The specific nature and influence of gladiatorial contests in Ancient Rome, including those of the Colosseum, will be discussed and analyzed as well as their impact on the Ancient World. The purpose of this paper is to provide details about certain aspects of gladiatorial combat. After gaining an understanding of the games and how they started, where they occurred, and the response to them, it will go into more depth to describe how these events and people have affected the Ancient World. The fights started in 264 B.C.E. to commemorate the death of Marcus Aemilius Lepidus, and this was the start of what would become a major form of Roman entertainment. What started as a kind of religious ceremony slowly evolved into a way to entertain citizens and to help candidates for political positions to gain favor by holding the games, since people enjoyed them. The construction of the Colosseum greatly assisted in providing gladiators a place to hold their fights and to allow many more spectators to view them. Spartacus demonstrated how not everyone in ancient Rome agreed with the concept of gladiator fights and provided an opposing view rather than that of the majority of Roman citizens. These specific topics, the Colosseum, Spartacus, and the first fight, will be considered and evaluated in the following paper.

Ancient Roman chariot races were a highly esteemed event that were, in a rather gruesome way, the life and soul of Rome. Huge crowds of 250,000 to 3 million people(approximately one third of Rome’s population) gathered at the gargantuan and widely acclaimed Circus Maximus, the centerpiece of ancient Rome. The allure for the Romans was held in the overpowering excitement and danger that occurred every time the charioteers stepped onto the track.
Most gladiators were captured soldiers from Roman wars, slaves, or prisoners. Unsurprisingly, lives of new gladiators were harsh and unpleasant. After the Roman Empire decided they would be gladiators, they would have been sent to a gladiator school where they would have been given an exam by a doctor. If they were fit enough to fight they would have been assigned a specific gladiator job based on their size and strength. The recruits, or novicius, would go through initial training which focused on fitness and their assigned gladiator type’s specific fighting techniques often by former gladiators. After the recruits finished initial training they would have been called Tirones and were marked with tattoos to make it harder to escape. Though many the new gladiators were put in shackles and were no allowed to talk, all gladiators were fed three meals a day. They were also given medical care when needed as well as fairly comfortable housing. After some experience gladiators were treated better. Once a seasoned gladiator, they were given massages, hot baths, and women. Gladiators were expected to fight between five and three times a year and were given a public banquet before each game. They were expected to die honorably, and if they did not they were put to death in terrible ways.
According to page 235 of “Ancient Rome: A New History” the origin of gladiatorial combat comes from funeral games. It was here that “military virtues of society were celebrated” and gladiatorial combat was introduced. It’s citizens, impervious to the meaningful lives lost in the gladiatorial arts, failed to hear the ringing and could only gaze into the sky, pleading for clarity from their gods.
