The Remaining Contributions of the Roman Republic
Questions- What were the three areas in which the Romans made lasting contributions to Western Civilization?
The Roman Empire is considered one of the greatest empires & republics of all time. The Romans have made at least five major contributions that still affect the modern world today. One the major contributions to modern day society that the Romans gave us was their architecture. There are three main things that the Romans are most prominently remembered for in the world of architecture. Arches, the forums and public buildings, and the Colosseum. The arches were not created by the Romans, but simply improved. Roman engineers improved on arches by flattening

The main reason that the Romans could do this was because of their invention of cement. This permitted the Romans to build buildings larger that other groups, because they had a way of holding the stones together. Also, along with columns, domes and vaulted ceilings, the arch became one of the defining characteristics of the Roman architectural style. As for the forum and public buildings, there were two kinds of forums in ancient Rome, the fora civilia and fora venalia. The fora civilia was for the monuments and statues of the city such as Triumphal arches and for public court cases. The fora venalia was for buying, selling and trade. Both foras were heavily ornamented to honor the gods, and both have held up over the immense amount of people that have traveled through them. The last main topic is the Colosseum. The Colosseum is, or rather was, elliptical building measuring 189 meters long and 156 meters wide with a base area of 24,000 m² with a height of more than 48 meters. It is one of the longest standing structures that Rome has given us. It shows their building creativity and architectural skill. The Colosseum is the basis, design wise, for many sports arenas, being capable
“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” –Marcus Garvey. The U.S. is a combination of many cultures and influences over the centuries and because of this we are alike to many of them. We could name many of these influences: the Greeks, the Chinese Dynasties but the Romans were particularly like us. We might see them as barbaric is some ways but the reality is that the U.S. takes pages from many areas of the Romans, and comparisons could be drawn between both of us. Examples include government, our religions, and in some ways entertainment. The U.S. is much like the old Roman Empire was more than a millennium ago
In conclusion this paper has showed many different reason how he has changed life and how he changed people's lives in history forever.
In Rome the buildings were constructed under Roman Empire. The Roman Colosseum was constructed between 69 to 79 CE by the Vespasian emperor, The Circus Maximum was built in the 2nd century B.C by the high emperor, in 31 B.C the fire destroyed it that led Emperor Augustus to rebuild the Circus in 82 AD, Ludus Magnus was a gladiatorial training school in Rome and it was originally built between 81-96AD by Emperor Domitian. The emperor’s theme was large public stone buildings that would bring the people of Rome together and also the emperor was rich and they had manpower. The emperors also patron towards the workers and also to prove that they are the great leaders. The emperors had money, a lot of workers to build the buildings to the Emperor’s satisfaction. The buildings were used by the public as entertainment where they would go and watch all sorts of races & fights.
Rome's vast empire lasted for an amazing one thousand-year reign. Half of it referred to as the republic, and the other as the empire. However, after its fall in 5oo-a.d. Rome has still remained in existence through its strong culture, architecture, literature, and even religion (Spielvogel 175). Even after its disappearance as a nation Rome left behind a legacy that will never be forgotten. Its ideals and traditions have been immolated, and adopted for over two thousand years. Whether, it is through its language of Latin, its influence of religion, or its amazing architectural ability Rome has influenced almost every culture following its demise. The heritage of Rome has been passed down through three different channels; one is through the eastern Roman Empire; through the Roman Catholic Church, and consciously by any and every one who has been in touch with Roman Culture (Hadas 157).
It was so much more advanced than any empire that came before this time. Romans took a lot of pride in their their buildings and architecture and many of the structures they used back then are still used today, like columns and arches. The Romans used columns and arches in structures like the colosseum and the Circus Maximus, both which were buildings where gladiatorial games or chariot races were held. These structures are still used today, for example, you can see these structures at one of the most famous buildings in the United States, the White House. The architecture from the roman era has impacted modern day by giving us structures to add into our cultures and to important buildings around our
The ancient Romans were skilled engineers and have left lasting contributions in this field. The Romans built a great network of roads connecting cities throughout their empire. They also built aqueducts and bridges using arches for support. The Roman arch design was by far the most important innovation of their time. The arch, however, would have been useless without the discovery of concrete. The Romans had many other such discoveries that would make their engineering skills known throughout the world.
A prime example that conveys the idea of buildings being used to express a sense of national identity lies within the Roman Empire and its consequent architecture. In order for the Romans to maintain control of their vast Empire, they required the building of both formal architecture, like temples and basilicas, as well as effective infrastructure, such as bridges, roads and aqueducts. The construction of roads and bridges allowed for communication between all the different provinces. Aqueducts allowed the Romans to supply the cities with water, whilst fortifications and city walls helped to protect them. Roman cities consisted of a network of administrative centers and the buildings within them acted as visual symbols of power throughout the Empire.
Roman military has harsh rules, such as any man in the military should report their general's proclamation or who departed, if anyone did not report, which would be treated as life was forfeited. (Livy) Roman military also respected every soldier who contributed to military as well, if some of them died, they will be noble birth. (Livy) Roman military also spent a lot of money to buy military equipment, such as sword and helmet to prepare for victory. After the Samnitc War, Roman military got great victory in southern Italy, and then Roman military wanted to expand their region to Tarentum. King Pyrrhus of Epirus wanted to conquest the west to east of Alexander. Pyrrhus offered the peace to Rome, but the outcome was that Roman rejected the
At the end of the Roman Empire there was many things that came about and helped to further the advancement of western civilization. Like for instance the fall of Rome brought about the de-centralization of Europe. Although there were some time of war during this transition ultimately it brought about universities and the love of learning. Because of the love of learning the Age of Exploration was brought about where many would want to go and see the world and learn something new.
The building of this famous Roman structure is still a mystery to us today. However, the excavation of this site has helped archeologist better understand the structure itself and the way it was built. Along with this, it has helped us understand Roman culture and history more than we had before. The Colosseum is an extremely important part of Roman history and has shaped ancient Roman culture into what it is known as today.
The ancient Romans had many contributions that were important to the western civilization. Some of their contributions include the aqueducts, public baths, markets, and juries. The Romans were also the greatest builders of the ancient western world. The Romans made varies of contributions to the Western Civilization, but a few are the most important of all. Rome was the most important civilization to the Western World. Ancient Rome: Age of Augustus The Age of Augustus is considered to be the golden age of ancient Rome. The founding of early Rome, including its independence from the Etruscans, occurred in the 7th and 6th centuries BCE. The Republic began in 509 BCE and lasted until 27 BCE, when Octavian (born 63 BCE) became the sole ruler of Rome under the name Augustus Caesar. Augustus ruled until his death in 14 AD.
“From the Etruscans they absorbed the fundamentals of urban planning, chariot racing, the toga, bronze and gold crafting, and the most ingenious structural principal of Mesopotamian architecture – the arch” (Fiero, 2013, p. 66). The Romans exploited the Greek culture by taking their gods and architectural principals. The Roman Empire, at its peak held sway over a huge portion of the known world, and thus was able to impose and disseminate their culture to others. Roman culture impacted western civilization immensely, playing a key role in the rise of Christianity, the spread of political ideals and gave rise to the Holy Roman
...ovements on the arch and the dome. Also, they built roads, bridges, harbors, and aqueducts, which they were most famous for. Aqueducts were a revolutionary invention that carried water from the hills to the cities. Even today, the principal of the aqueducts enables many urban areas to have water. The lasting contributions of the Roman Empire have helped to shape modern living.
The Roman’s had its ups and downs, but they made a lasting effect on today’s world, the establishment of law, the creation of the democratic government and the increase of Christianity ("Roman Influences," n.d.). We were also left with tangible items such as art and the delicate and beautiful artifacts. The empire was also known to help spread Latin Language, which formed the foundation of the English language ("Roman Influences,"
