After that there were tons of games everyday and the people loved to watch the games for entertainment or just to see people die. Well my big question is why was the colosseum so popular?
Well there was an effect for the building being made. All the people dying. But there was a cause because it gave the Romans a lot of entertainment like sports on TV it was popular for the romans.
The big question in this essay is why was the colosseum so popular well, before the colosseum was even made there was no fights for the romans to watch. So when the romans saw the Etruscans playing the games they thought that gives the Etruscans a lot of entertainment. So they took the idea of the games. That solved the romans problem of not having entertainment The Romans were at the colosseum all the time it gave them a lot of entertainment. That was what the big problem was before the Colosseum was built.
What was the difference the fights the Romans had? Well there was ship racing and gladiator fights. For the gladiator fights they would take slaves from other places and had them fight animals and even other people. What they did for Water battling was they would take people and they would fight/ race each other in water. What was the same thing between ship racing and fights was someone would always die or get hurt. They would Use slaves for both types of fighting. So that is why the Colosseum was so popular. Consus where the opening sacrifices took place was located in the center of the Circus Maximus where the racing took place. Like racing, gladiators probably originated as funeral games, with religious significance attached to what in affect was the ritual sacrifice of the gladiators themselves. The first recorded gladiator fight was in 264BC, when 3 pairs of gladiators fought to the death during the funeral of Junius Brutus. The gladiator fights were known as munera as they were originally 'duties' paid to dead ancestors. They gradually lost their connection to funerals under the Roman Empire and became an important stage for emperors and leaders to put on spectacles for their own reasons.
In Rome the buildings were constructed under Roman Empire. The Roman Colosseum was constructed between 69 to 79 CE by the Vespasian emperor, The Circus Maximum was built in the 2nd century B.C by the high emperor, in 31 B.C the fire destroyed it that led Emperor Augustus to rebuild the Circus in 82 AD, Ludus Magnus was a gladiatorial training school in Rome and it was originally built between 81-96AD by Emperor Domitian. The emperor’s theme was large public stone buildings that would bring the people of Rome together and also the emperor was rich and they had manpower. The emperors also patron towards the workers and also to prove that they are the great leaders. The emperors had money, a lot of workers to build the buildings to the Emperor’s satisfaction. The buildings were used by the public as entertainment where they would go and watch all sorts of races & fights.
The citizens of Rome loved to go to these bloody warfares. In the city of Rome, these events were held in the Colosseum. An arena so large that it could hold 50,000 spectators and host fights between men and animals.
...m. This huge circular arena was the pinnacle of the Roman Gladiatorial games, and though it isn't fully intact, it is a great reminder of ancient culture. Though today these games seem inhumane and unnecessary, to their ancient culture it was a vacation from everyday stress. Even the Emperor was said to understand that though money and grain would satisfy and individual, large spectacles were necessary for the contentment of the masses' (wes civ).
The first battle was fought entirely in Sicily, in 263BCE, and since the Romans were the superior fighters they took the ground battle and continued to prevail until 256BCE. After the victory over Carthage, the Romans began besieging Greek cities that allied with the Carthaginians. The Romans sacked these cities, which caused them to harden their resistance. Rome realized that to beat the Carthaginians they needed to build a fleet and in 261BCE they began building. To counter the Romans inexperience at sea they used a device called a corvus (a large gangplank with a spike on the underside).
Colosseum was used just for gladiatorial battles, the Colosseum was also filled water so the
“The Romans are often characterized as loving violent and cruel entertainment in the amphitheatre. It has been suggested that the games served the dual purpose of providing entertainment for the people and maintaining the political status quo.”
The Romans were on one of the greatest people of all. They had power, wealth, and even a half of the world. They built one of the strongest and vast empire that world has ever seen. They came from nothing to something awesome. It started of as a city and ended up being one of the greatest empire of all. The first known gladiatorial combat in Rome took place at the funeral of a nobleman named Junius Brutus in 264 B.C.2 His sons Marcus and Decimus revived an ancient Etruscan custom of having slaves fight at the funeral of a great leader in the belief that such a sacrifice would please the gods. During the ceremony, three pairs of slaves were forced to fight to the death. In 216 B.C., twenty-two pairs of slaves fought at the funeral of a man named Marcus Lepidus. Sixty pairs of slaves fought when Publicus Licinius died in 183 B.C. These slave fighters were now known as bustiarii, or funeral men.3 By the time of Julius Caesar, any direct association with funerals and religion was gone, and these fighters, now known as gladiators, meaning swordsmen, were a powerful force in Roman politics. He bought the affection of the people with magnificent banquets and spectacles that were open and free to the public. Caesar then estab...
It is said that the Romans were known for their honor and glory as a reflection of the society they lived in. This may perhaps explain why the gladiator games were popular to the citizens, because the Romans enjoyed observing these characteristics throughout the battles. Most of the time the contestants were slaves, these individuals were bought and traded at the coliseum with the intentions of battling in these games until their death. Soldiers that were captured at the end of a battle were chained to one another as they marched hundreds of miles back to Rome.... ... middle of paper ...
Much like today’s athletes gladiators competed with one another to decide a victor and is a form of entertainment for people spectating. But Gladiators competed much different than professional athletes do today. Gladiators were forced to fight for the entertainment of others and were considered slaves (“ The Roman Gladiator”). Gladiators did not just fight for friendly sport either they had to fight to the death. This made the gladiatorial games so exciting for the people watching. The people loved to watch others fight and the gore that they would see while the gladiators were fighting. It may sound horrible in today’s society but back then it was the most prominent form of entertainment. Different from today’s athletes and entertainers, gladiators were slaves and were told what to do against their will. Much of the gladiators were slaves, criminals, and prisoners of war. Gladiatorial games were mostly held by the Roman Republic and forced there enemy’s to fight for their lives in the...
Picture a life as a criminal, captive of war, disobedient slaves in possession of a strong body and resourceful mind fighting for the enjoyment of the people around you. A life where you had to kill those who trained with you daily to stay alive while death was a given at some point in the arena. Gladiators played a tremendous role in the Roman Empire. This fighting was a way for the wealthy emperors to gloat the power they had as well as a way to bring together a city.
They felt so special they decided to build a city. They ran into a problem, Romulus and Remus argued about where to put the city. Romulus used his warrior like skills to kill his brother to get what he wanted, just like warriors fight for their country or to get what they want. It is now clear that Romans had war in their blood, and are great fighters.
First thing I’m going to talk about is how the Romans did in providing public service. When I did research I found out that they were good at giving the people what they needed and when they needed it. What makes me say this is because the Romans gave the people aqueducts which helped them get water from the rivers and streams in the valleys. Another thing that the Roman republic gave to the people was entertainment like chariot racing, plays, and theatre. The most popular way of giving the people entertainment was the Colosseum. In the Colosseum big gladiator fights with a lot of fatalities and for which was pleasing to the common and wealthy to watch. Other ways to entertain the people of Rome was to watch the sports like jumping, wrestling, and racing which were

Even after this, the Colosseum was put to further use. Parts of the Colosseum were torn down and donated, in the production of other buildings (mostly churches) in Rome.
