“Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, other make it happen.”-Michael Jordan. We have all had to persevere in our lives before. This quote is to show that you need to work to actually get something. In the book The Logans could not give up, they had to keep on trying to stop racism and discrimination. In the book Roll of thunder hear my cry, the author used several literary elements to show the theme of racism and also to help the book be more clear and engaging to the reader.
Mildred D. Taylor uses symbolism in Roll of thunder hear my cry a lot to bring out the main idea of racism, show character’s motivation and also to show setting which gives the reader a chance to feel like they are in the story. This is shown on page 205 and 206.

Them other trees all around… that oak and walnut, they’re a lot bigger and they take up more room and give so much shade they almost overshadow that little ole if. But that fig tree’s got roots that run deep, and it belongs in that yard as much as oak and walnut.” She shows this again when the kids describe the bus. On page 242, there is a small poem and it states “ Role of thunder hear my cry Over the water bye and bye Ole man comin’ down the line Whip in hand to beat me down But I ain’t gonna let him Turn me ‘round” This is another sign of symbolism. he showed the theme of racism by using symbolism on this page. She used more crafts to make the story a better
Falling action is the part of the book where the author ties together the different parts of the climax to conclude the book. In Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, the falling action follows TJ and the other Averys being violently pulled out of their house. After this, the author starts to tie together the climax by sending Cassie to get Papa’s help. When Cassie, Little Man, and Christopher John arrive back at their house, Papa grabs a gun aside from Mama’s compelling debate to not take the gun, and bolts out of the house in hopes of saving Stacey, TJ, and the other Averys. However, Papa decided not to use the gun, and cleverly lit the cotton field on fire instead. Having the cotton field on fire was indubitably a higher
The tree “swings through another year of sun and leaping winds, of leaves and bounding fruit.” This sentence evokes images of happiness and serenity; however, it is in stark contrast with “month after month, the whip-crack of the mortgage.” The tone of this phrase is harsh and the onomatopoeia of a “whip crack” stirs up images of oppression. The final lines of the poem show the consequences that the family accepts by preserving the tree—their family heritage. When the speaker judges the tree by its cover she sees monetary value, but when she looks at the content in the book she find that it represents family. Even though times may be tough for the family, they are united by memories of their ancestors.
Courage is having to stand up for people who are being treated unfairly or if they have different skin color. In Mildred Taylor’s book Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry Stacey has to show courage by standing up for his friends and family. Stacey is a seventh grader at Great Faith Elementary School and is the oldest Logan kid. when Papa is gone he feels like he needs to be the man of the house and watch out for his younger siblings. Stacey had to show courage when he helped Little Man get back at the bus, takes the blame for the cheat notes, and took T.J. home when he was injured.
Throughout the story, Walker uses brilliant imagery in describing each detail of what the mother sees through the eyes of her world. This imagery in turn creates a more interesting and imaginative story, and allows the reader to experience what the narrator is experiencing. The theme of imagery is not within the story, but how the story is told. However, the theme of love of one's family heritage is within the heart and not on the wall.
Symbolism is strongly represented through Kaplan’s short story. The symbols represented are the ocean, the killing of the doe and the woods. Visiting the ocean for the first time at the Jersey Shore was new for Andy. Since then she had been awfully frightened of the ocean. She believes the ocean to be a huge, vast that constantly moved, keeps shifting
Trees are constantly brought up in the book Speak and used to symbolize many things in many different ways. Every time Melinda would sketch a tree it would of always been drawn for a specific reason. Melindas struggle to find out who she was and her growth are parts of Melindas life.
A.S. Byatt uses symbolism in her story “The Thing in the Forest” to show how children in England during World War II, like herself, felt and reacted to the events that they knew where bad but didn’t understand. This can easily be shown through the sequencing of the plot, the deeper meanings behind characters and places, and the post effects it had the main characters.
Even though Mildred Taylor wasn’t a part of the Harlem Renaissance, I thought it was important how W.E.B Dubois wrote his short story in 1907. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry wasn 't published until 1975, and racial equality was still a heavily talked issue that authors published books about. This story was about a black family and the life they live. A girl Cassie Logan, tells you about her life growing as a black young girl. In this story, you hear about the troubling times that the family endures (Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry,
In almost every story, one can find symbolism throughout the text to help the reader better understand what the writer wants the reader to takeout from his/her story. Symbolism is something that must be analyzed and explored to experience a deeper meaning to the story. Sometimes, symbolism throughout a story may not be noticeable when first read, but going back to analyze the text can add a deeper meaning to words and can also help to enhance the meaning behind the story line. In some instances, symbolism can leave a reader to ponder what the writer is trying to express with the symbolism used in the story; for symbolism can be interpreted differently and can have many layers of meaning to it. Some good examples of short stories that use symbolism to extend the meaning behind the story line are “The Lottery,” “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall,” and “The Jury of Her Peers”.
Many authors and poets uses symbolism to express emotion and sections throughout the text. Symbols is a great literary device that can help give messages to the reader without the author being too direct. In the story, “Barns Burning” by William Faulkner, Symbolism helps analysis different emotions and meaning throughout the story.
1. The tree is the crucial symbol in the novel. The tree represents the enormous fear in which Gene lived at school, from the summer of 1942 until the spring of 1943. When he was a student at Devon, the tree seemed "tremendous" to Gene, "an irate, steely black steeple beside the river." When Gene does climb the tree, he enters into "a mild state of shock." He jumps from the tree "with the sensation that I was throwing my life away . . . ." Finally Gene returns to The Devon School after fifteen years and the tree is the main focus of his visit. Going to the river, Gene has trouble even differentiating it from the other trees. When he does identify it, the tree seems smaller to Gene, "shrunken by age." It seems "weary from age, enfeebled, dry...
Courage is when you keep on pushing, and pushing, until you get to the next level and don’t let anyone get in your way ,no matter what happens. In the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry By:Mildred D. Taylor, there is a sassy young girl named Cassie Logan. She is always sassy and she stands up for what she believes in and never lets anyone let her down. Cassie shows courage when she stood up to the Simm’s, when it was the first day of school for Little man, and when Cassie helped T.J. whenever he was hurt very badly. Cassie’s actions show that she isn’t afraid to stand up for her beliefs and her actions also show that she is very brave and wont let anyone stand in her way.
The next use of symbolism is the setting of the journey and meeting in the woods. Early Americans looked at the woods as a test of strength, bravery and endurance. It took a lot of courage for someone to enter the forest because it was unknown territory and they would not emerge the same. ?He had taken a dreary road, darkened by all gloomiest trees of the forest?that the traveler knows not who may be concealed by the innumerable trunks?he may be passing through an unseen multitude.? (197) Goodman Brown does not face the dangers of Indians but faces the danger of reality and truth.
Through the open window she sees many other symbols furthering the feelings of goodness in the reader. She sees the tops of trees that "were all quiver with the new spring life" symbolizing a new life to come, something new happening in her life. The setting of a "delicious breath of rain" in the air refers to the calmness after a storm when the sun comes back out. Kate Chopin is using this to refer to the death of Mrs. Mallards' husband and the new joyous life she may now lead that she is free of him. Also to be heard outside are the singing of birds and the notes of a distant song someone was singing, symbolizing an oncoming feeling of wellness, a build up to her realization that she is now free of the tyrannical rule of her husband.
Additionally, Hawthorne initiates his narration by introducing the awareness of the Forrest, making it an obvious representation. Clearly it represents evil in the world similar to the Puritan’s analogy that the woods are inhabited by the devil; thus Young Goodman Brown’s nocturnal expedition is one full of sin, darkness, and shame. Correspondingly, the most obvious symbol that I noticed as I read this story was the loss of virtuousness. Inadvertently as a result of Hawthorne’s writing the audience is exposed
