For as long as I can remember, women have always played a huge role in society. No matter if was race, ethnicity, or even their culture, women have always been important with the roles that they carry. In the book, Persepolis, you learn about what the Iranian women had to go through, especially Marjane Satrapis. We see Satrapi’s struggles through her childhood and the stories she tells. As you dig deeper in to the book, readers realize what an everyday life in Iran is like. Such as, growing up in war and the struggles it is being a young women. Not only do you continue to see the struggles, but you see the rebellious actions some women take by wearing the veil, such as joining revolutions and challenging their history.
After reading Persepolis, I was able to gain a better understanding on what the meaning of the veil is. In the Iranian culture, wearing the veil doesn’t only symbolize religion but it also shows how the women have respect for themselves. A phrase often used is “if you cover, you get respect”. One instance this was shown in Persepolis was when two men to started to insult Marji’s mom. They stated “if [she] didn’t want [disrespect] to happen, [she] should wear the veil” (Satrapi 73). There are two ways to wear the veil. One way is to wear it like a Fundamentalist woman; showing absolutely no hair (like Marji and her mother). Or a modern woman, that shows a little hair; by doing this you are rebelling against the government. “I didn’t really like to wear the veil, especially since I didn’t understand why I had to” (Satrapi 3). Resulting in not understanding why Marji had to wear her veil, she wore it just like her mother, a modern rebellious Iranian woman.

...ficulties surrounding the veiling practice and the resulting advantages and disadvantages. Veiling is not entirely a bad practice that’s about the spread of submissive, undermined woman. The rebellious acts by Iranian women are found by women who wear the veil, being a part of the country’s riots, and challenging what they think their history is all about. In spite of the effect of the veil, and how it’s looked at to be oppressive, Iranian women find that today they have found strength and identity by wearing their veil proudly. Additionally women who participate in the revolution, such as Marji and her mother, stuck to who they were regardless of the amount of punishment they could have gotten into with their government. Even though Iranian women are trying to overcome discrimination and dealing with being stripped of their rights, Iranian women still stand tall.
Professor Leila Ahmed, active Islamic feminist, in her article “Reinventing the veil” published in the Financial Times assumes that there is a connection between “advancement” and veiling, which means that unveiled women are advanced and vice versa. In addition, she supports that it led to increasing rate of violence. She questions why women wear veil, that is considered as “symbol of patriarchy and women’s oppression”. However, research changed her position towards wearing veil. In this particular story, the author’s emotions in Persepolis are not just her own, but also the feelings,emotions, and opinions of her people and their country. Throughout the expressiveness can not only be felt but they can visually be seen. The opinions of the Iranian people is expressive of their emotions which led them to demand that their voices be heard to the point where they cannot be ignored. The demonstrations shown on page five, first frame shows the strong opinions that the people have regarding the addition of veils. Their opinions are filled with so much emotions that it eventually lead them to protest publicly. On one side of the protest were those for the veil and on the other side were those who opposed it. Those against the veil felt as though it took away their freedom and the visual representation of their personality; those for the veil felt as though the veil was a representation of order which to them was what their country needed. The year of the revolution was a very difficult time for Iran; even though she knew very little about the dangers of the revolution, she still very much wanted to be apart of it. For some women wearing a veil is not something that is forced on them but rather a choice of their own. Martha Nussbaum and Maysan Haydar are both authors that try to explain their reasoning that veiling isn't an oppressive tool used against women. Martha Nussbaum's article “Veiled Threats”, is a political and philosophical take on why banning the burqa is a violation of human rights. On the other hand Maysan Haydar’s article “Don’t Judge a Muslim Girl by Her Covering”, is a more humorous and personal take on why veiling shouldn't be as judged or stereotyped. Though Nussbaum and Haydar have equal goals this essay is being used to understand the main argument, claims and whether or not each article has any weaknesses.
Furthermore, Haydar expresses that she has been able to embrace the modesty in veiling and that it allows her to be seen as a whole person. She addresses the fact that “many Americans see veiling as an oppressive tool forced on Muslim women by the men in our culture” (414). The way they dressed quickly changed as shown when Marji asserted that “In no time, the way people dressed became an ideological sign. There were two kinds of women. The fundamentalist woman [and] the modern woman. There were also two sorts of men. The fundamentalist man [and] the progressive man” (75). Satrapi uses the two frames on page 75 to illustrate the idea associated with the two different ways in which both men and women chose to dress whether it be tradition, or not. Satrapi expounds how their choice of dressing then depicts their view on the Islamic Revolution. Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel, Persepolis, makes important strides toward altering how Western audiences perceive Iranian women. Satrapi endeavors to display the intersection of the lives of some Westerners with her life as an Iranian, who spent some time in the West. Satrapi, dissatisfied with representations she saw of Iranian women in France, decided to challenge them. In her words, “From the time I came to France in 1994, I was always telling stories about life in Iran to my friends. We’d see pieces about Iran on television, but they didn’t represent my experience at all. I had to keep saying, ‘No, it’s not like that there.’ I’ve been justifying why it isn’t negative to be an Iranian for almost twenty years. How strange when it isn’t something I did or chose to be?” (Satrapi, “Why I Wrote Persepolis” 10). In acknowledging both Eastern and Western feminism, Satrapi’s novel humanizes the female Iranian perspective in a way that can easily digested by Western audiences.
The Iranian Islamic Revolution of 1979 created a lasting affect on the societal role of women through modern day Iran. Women in Iran before the revolution were not entirely treated equal to men, but despite some cultural perceptions of women being inferior to men, they had made progress to become socially equal under the Shah. Several misconceptions and theories have been published and studied to show the inequality of women versus men because of Islam. However, contrasting theories have also been made to show that inequality has little to do with the religion, but instead with the forceful nature upon which it was implemented in the revolution. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the Islamic and political history of Iran and its social implications over Iranian women.
