Surgical Technologists Profession
Surgical technologists play an important role in the operating room. They are called scrubs or operating technicians, surgical technologist assists under the supervision of a surgeon in the operating room. (www.ast.org)
Duties
Surgical Technologist prepare s the operating room for patients. They work as a team of medical practitioners providing surgical care for the surgeons. Their job description is to prepare the operating room by selecting and opening sterile supplies. They do preoperative duties, which includes assembling, adjusting, checking nonsterile equipment to ensure that everything thing works properly. The population and ages for these procedures are expected to continually grow in the years to come, because there are new surgical procedures such as fiber optics, laser and robotics procedures that are being introduced. Hospitals are the main source for employment for surgical technologists and other areas like clinics, surgical centers at physicians and dentist offices. (www.mayo.edu)
National Board of Surgical Technologists and Surgical Assisting jobs has various jobs on their sites from temporary to full time for at least 2 years’ experience in hospitals main operating rooms and Ambulatory Surgery experience.
Earnings
There is a potential earning in this field according to the Department of Labor of a median annual earning for surgical technologists of $41,710 in May of 2012. (www.mayo.edu). However, according the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median 2015 income was $50,550 and this field is expected to grow much faster than average. (www.gulfcoast.edu)

Enrollment
Mayo School Health Science has an enrollment of more than 800 students each year for the surgical technologist program. These students come from all walks of life, diverse cultural, social, economic and educational backgrounds. (www.mayo.edu)
The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) recognized more than 400 Accredited programs in 2005 and these programs must run between 9 and 24 months to get a certificate, diploma or an associate degree.

Conclusion
As I researched this health care profession, I found it very interesting on how close this program is to becoming a doctor. Students must learn some of the same subjects that a doctor must learn, only with less time and of course they earn a lot less income. This is an interesting field to train for, however, it’s a start for more exciting areas of the medical
