During the 17th and 18th centuries, the Chinese and Japanese faced much internal conflict, but while China faced a combination of economic setbacks and political weakness, the Japanese were riddled with wars along their countryside. First, the Chinese emperor was too weak in comparison to his bureaucracy, which ended up making most of the decisions for the last Ming dynasty emperor. This was due to the emperor’s realization that having a title as Son of Heaven did not mean he had all the power of the empire. Instead he lived a laid back life where the bureaucrats vied for power and wealth amongst themselves and he merely managed them. Like the Chinese, the Japanese also saw elites battling it out for power, but this time on the battlefield with armies of samurai. These battles put Japan in a period much like the Warring States period in early Chinese history, where families fought and fought for power almost endlessly. The political weakness in China contributed to its economic failure as well. With no force to manage to seas, pirates were free to raid trade ships and villages along the coast line, weakening the Chinese economy that relied on a transport system to supply the country. These two major forces led to China’s fragmentation and eventual takeover by the Manchu. In contrast, the battles happening in Japan were not harmful to the economy as much as they were in China. This is due to the fact that the Japanese daimyos were independent...

Russia wanted to open trading relations with Japan and when the Japanese denied the proposal for trade between themselves and Russia, Russia attacked already established trading posts in Japan knowing they didn’t have the the forces in order to defend. In response to this attack, Japan captured a captain of a Russian surveying group and held him until Russia agreed to stipulations before he could be released. The shogunate was weary of westerners and had great respect for its ancestors so initiating any new foreign relations wasn’t allowed and if there were to be any contact with foreigners it was under strict orders of how and when. The shogunate while weary was aware that there were many countries wanting to establish relations with Japan and was against having any contact at all so the country of Japan was closed off to all western powers and an isolationist policy was born. This policy while in theory would help the country of Japan protect itself in its vulnerable state wound up impoverishing itself and they hurt themselves more in the process by stifling their economy even further. During this period of isolation, Japan tried working to improve itself in order to be ready for that one day when the country would no longer be closed off to all other powers around them. The Industrial Revolution in Europe caused the need for oversea expansion because the manufacturers needed things like: rubber, petroleum, and palm oil all of which Africa had. Europe moving into Africa was also caused by nationalism, when France went into Africa so did Britain (Ellis). The difference between France and Britain was the way of rule they used. There are four different methods of imperialism: direct, indirect, protectorate, and sphere of influence. The most popular were direct and indirect. The French used direct, they sent officials and soldiers from France to administer their colonies and their purpose was to inflict French culture on their colonies and make them into French provinces (Ellis). The British, however, used indirect, they used chiefs to oversee their colonies and encouraged the children in the colonies to get education in Britain. The British “Westernized” their colonies and only used military force when threatened (Ellis).
