Gothic Fiction and Frankenstein Gothic fiction literature touches on the aspects of horror, mystery, manipulation, superstition, and death. Many events in the story are a result of this writing style, many times involving a monster or paranormal being of some sort carrying out acts of terror on the innocent. The various murders in the story are a common occurrence when it comes to this literary time period, and this makes no exception. Family is also used in this as it is used in many other Gothic pieces of work, used in manipulative ways, based around the innocent. He originally is not a morbid creature, but soon finds out he can get what he wants with his strength. In the first half of Viktor’s narration, he speaks of the assassination on his younger brother William. Justine, a young girl living in the Frankenstein household, is accused for committing the murder, and is executed for it. Later in the narration, it is revealed that the monster did it, proving more of his willingness to kill. Later in the story, Viktor makes his way up to the peak of a glacier, hoping to drain his mind of all of his sorrows that he has been drowning in recently. The monster confronts him there, wanting to talk to him about his life up to that point. This when the monster tells Viktor about how he managed to make his way to Geneva, kill William, and frame Justine. The monster also tells Viktor about how lonely he has been, and how he has been travelling alone for months and months. The monster believes that the fix to this is for Viktor to create a female creature, so that he can have a companion. The monster claims that if he does not have a companion to marry, he will be with Viktor “on his wedding night”. Viktor agrees at first, but in the midst of this creation, he realizes that he may be populating the world with these creatures if they decide to mate, and quickly destroys his work. The monster is enraged, and on Viktor's wedding night, instead of killing him, he kills Elizabeth. This causes Viktor to go out on a wild chase attempting to kill the monster, but this ends up turning back against him, as the monster ends up killing Viktor, and realizes he is now truly alone in this

Most stories also include some type of supernatural events and/or superstitious aspects. Specifically, vampires, villains, heroes and heroines, and mysterious architecture are standard in a gothic text. Depending upon the author, a gothic text can also take on violent and grotesque attributes. As an overall outlook, “gothic literature is an outlet for the ancient fears of humanity in an age of reason” (Sacred-Texts). Following closely to this type of literature, Edgar Allan Poe uses a gloomy setting, isolation, and supernatural occurrences throughout “The Fall of the House of Usher”.

Without having to engage with any real danger, it is common for the reader to feel anxiety and impaitence when reading gothic fiction. In order for the reader to feel these emotions, the author uses certain elements, such as a gloomy setting and old-fashioned dialoge. In the stories “The Black Cat” and “The Tell Tale Heart”, by elgar allen poe, and “The Landlady”, by Roland Dahl, there are many similarites that remanticize the idea of horror and mystery. Some elements, however, bring out the disbolical horror of gothic literature: the setting, characterization, and the motif of suspense.
Gothic Elements are vital to the foundation and development of Gothic Literature. These element provide a sense of realness and depth to a story. These Elements include death, entrapment, and fascination with the past.

Mary Shelley’s world renowned book, “Frankenstein”, is a narrative of how Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant chemist, succeeds in creating a living being. Although Frankenstein’s creation is benevolent to begin with, he soon turns murderous after being mistreated by humans. His anger turns towards Frankenstein, as he was the one who brought him into the world that shuns him. The Monster then spends the rest of the story trying to make his creator’s life as miserable as his own. Alienation can be defined as emotional isolated or dissociation from others. Alienation helps with character development.
