Robinson was a young man of 18 and had a dream to be a sailor. He asked his father for permission. His father thought that he should stay home and take over the family business or study law. Robinson asked his father again to let him have just one sail. His father disapproved once more. One afternoon a shipped sailed in from the harbor. The captain of the ship was one of Crusoe’s friend’s, father. The captain invited Crusoe on a voyage to the English coast and he couldn’t resist. Crusoe ran away. He was very seasick. Soon after he set off on his second voyage. Here he would travel to the coast of Africa. He learned how to trade with the natives. On one of his voyages he was ship wrecked and picked up by another boat. The captain owned a plantation. Soon after this Crusoe bought his own plantation. When other plantation owners needed slaves to work their farms they asked Crusoe to sail to Africa. Crusoe agreed and set sail. On the way there they ran into many storms. Three men were killed very soon. The twelfth day was a hard one. The biggest storm hit. Its waves were giant. The ship was in very bad shape and Crusoe had to abandon it. He and the other sailors loaded into the small boat and paddled to land. All of the sudden a titanic wave crashed onto the boat. It drowned everyone but Crusoe. He was lucky to be alive. When he got the strength to walk again he found himself a safe place to sleep for the night, which was between to limbs a big tree. When he awoke the next morning he went he decided to salvage some stuff from the boat. There were so many things on the ship he had to build a raft to carry them back to land. He found carpentry tools, artillery, clothes, nails, and food. When he was on his way back a current started to pull him away from the place were he had landed. It was a creek. It pulled him to a perfect spot to unload his stuff. Crusoe found a great place to build a fort were he could see if any ships came and to protect him from any other sorts wild of beasts. Soon he learned that he should keep a calendar. He stood up a post in the sand.
The days after he found out how to make fire, he also made a spear. With this spear he could catch fish and cook them on the fire. he then sees a plane. Brian screamed and waved his arms up and down rapidly, he wanted the plane to notice him. The plan circled around the lake a few times and then flew away. Brian went to bed and hoped the next day would be better than this one had been.
Then he has a vision of home, "where his four beautiful daughters would have had their lunch and might be playing tennis" and sees himself as free to be an explorer. Response: The novel begins with a character named Robert Walton who wrote letters to his sister about his journey traveling to find adventure in undiscovered land. He tells the reader about how he yearns for company, and questions his choices. But he believes in himself and achieves confidence after his ship sets sail. On its journey the ship ends up being stuck in between icebergs, and the sailors noticed a large creature with a sled, and then the next morning they found another sled with a very ill man on it. The most famous writer of his time and still renowned today, Charles Dickens is a man that people do not know much about. The only real information that anyone knows about him is that he is an author that has published many famous books and stories, such as The Tale of Two Cities and A Christmas Carol. What is not known about Dickens is that he was a poor person who lived during the Victorian Era (named after Queen Victoria) and was accountable for some of literature’s model characters. Unlike, many modern-day authors most of Charles Dickens’ work was released in a series of monthly magazines. This was customary back then, as opposed to releasing the entire novel at one time – this technique was used to keep the readers interesting by using cliffhangers (e.g. to be continued…). Dickens worked his way up from nothing; he went from being a poor child labor worker to becoming one of the most praised authors for his astounding, intricate plots as well as his distinct, realistic characters.
Daniel Defoe wrote his fictional novel Robinson Crusoe during the 18th century, a time of colonization, and the British agricultural revolution. In the novel Robinson Crusoe desires civilization and comforts during his years on the island, so much that he alters the ecology of the fictional “island” in order to fulfill his craving. Consequently, Robinson Crusoe changes the ecology of the island, with the introduction of invasive species, European crops, and enclosures. Crusoe uses the practices of the British agricultural revolution to colonize the island, and to better his life during his stay.
Thomas Hobbes, 1588-1679, was an English philosopher of the Enlightenment period who had a very harsh view on human nature and severely doubted our ability to make decisions for the good of society. Hobbes was born on April 5, 1588 in London, England to impoverished parents, so it was his wealthy uncle who provided the funds for his education. His advanced intellect as a child was recognized and he received training in Greek and Latin classics before going to Oxford University in 1603. He studied at Oxford for the next five years, but felt unfulfilled by the school’s focus on ancient logic so he skipped most of the lectures to spend time reading and studying Greek and Latin. After he graduated from school in 1608 Hobbes got a job tutoring for a wealthy family and from his interactions with them got an idea of how the powerful, upper class lived. In 1610, Hobbes accompanied William Cavendish, the young man he had been tutoring, on a trip around Europe and learned about some of the European scientific methods, which he liked better than the English philosophy he had learned at school. After they returned to England, Hobbes got a job as a secretary working for Cavendish and renewed his study of ancient texts, deciding to do the first translation of Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian Wars into English. From Thucydides’ book Hobbes learned that understanding the past was necessary to act correctly in the present and that the ancient Greeks believed that democracy was an inferior form of government.
“He told me I might judge happiness of this state by this one thing, viz. that this was the state of life which all other people envied, that kings have frequently lamented the miserable consequences of being born to great things, and wish’d they had been placed in the middle of the two extremes, between the mean and they great; that the wise man gave his testimony to this as the just standard of true felicity, when he prayed to have neither poverty or riches” (Defoe 2). This is a part of the lecture Robinson’s father had given when he tried to keep him from a life of sailing. But when your parents give you a lecture or advice, do you always listen? Sometimes you’ll disobey and follow your own path. Defoe did, and so did his fictional character Robinson Crusoe. Like this, Robinson and Defoe are alike in several ways. Defoe was inspired to write Robinson Crusoe by his living conditions, income, some of their troubles, and their writing.
Charles John Huffam1 Dickens was born 7 February 1812, second child of John and Elizabeth Dickens. The family would eventually number seven children, plus a son who died in infancy, and since neither parent seemed able to economize, things were generally very hard financially for the family. Charles attended school for a time in Kent, where the happiest days of his childhood were spent, but when the family moved to London in 1822, Charles was simply never re-enrolled in school, and was left to wander London largely unattended2. So, for six months, he worked in a factory pasting labels onto containers of shoe polish. Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe is considered to be the first novel of incident. Before I read the novel I knew something about poor Robinson Crusoe--shipwrecked on a desert island, lived on the island for a lot of years, and acquired a friend by the name of Friday. As I began to read, I had the preconceived notion that Robinson Crusoe was just an adventure book. However, I read no more than a few pages before my mind was greatly enlightened. Robinson Crusoe does not suffer just one shipwreck, but two of them. He is captured by Moorish pirates, escapes, and goes to Brazil to become a planter. After his second shipwreck, Crusoe gives details about his techniques for survival. Also, the ending of the novel is quite surprising with a setting that is quite a contrast to the desert island. Arguably, one of the funniest scenes in all of literature is recorded in the final chapters.
Daniel Defoe tells tale of a marooned individual in order to criticize society. By using the Island location, similar to that of Shakespeare's The Tempest, Defoe is able to show his audience exactly what is necessary for the development of a utopian society. In The Tempest, the small society of Prospero's island addresses the aspects of morality, the supernatural and politics in the larger British society. In Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, the island's natural surroundings highlights the subject of man's individual growth, both spiritually and physically. Nature instantly exercises its power and control over man in the tropical storm that leads to the wreckage of Crusoe's ship. "The fury of the sea" (Defoe, 45) thrusts Crusoe to the shores of the uninhabited "Island of Despair" (Defoe, 70). Isolated on the island, Crusoe is challenged to use his creativity in order to survive.
The portrayal of society in Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations is that of a symbol of contemporary British civilization, with Miss Havisham representing the epitome of such. By utilizing this particular character as the conduit between social body and physical body, the author successfully blends together the kinship inherent to these aspects of British life. Miss Havisham is instrumental in establishing the link between the traditional Victorian society and the manner in which women finally gained significant changes in their investments. The economic health of society at the time of Great Expectations can easily be determined by the manner in which Miss Havisham’s personal history of poor investment strategy reflects the community’s somewhat fragile situation.
The more the Robinsons explored the woods, the more they found things that would make life easier. They soon discovered some kind of wax berries which they melted and made into candles. They even found a huge salt cavern! The cavern was big enough for them and their supplies, so they moved in, for the rainy season was coming fast. They built stables for their animals, a canoe, and a loom for Mother. The Robinsons were very creative. They made the worst situation into something good and before they knew it, they had spent ten years living on that deserted island! They knew the island like the back of their own hands and Father and Mother watched their sons grow into manhood, as they too got older.
Daniel Defoe has frequently been considered the father of realism in regards to his novel, Robinson Crusoe. In the preface of the novel, the events are described as being “just history of fact” (Defoe and Richetti ). This sets the tone for the story to be presented as factual, while it is in of itself truly fiction. This is the first time that a narrative fictional novel has been written in a way that the story is represented as the truth. Realistic elements and precise details are presented unprecedented; the events that unfold in the novel resonate with readers of the middle-class in such a way that it seems as if the stories could be written about themselves. Defoe did not write his novel for the learned, he wrote it for the large public of tradesmen, apprentices and shopkeepers (Häusermann 439-456).
