In the days of King Harry II, Robin Hood was an adventurous, kind gentlemen and good yeoman. For instance, he was the most courteous outlaw in all of Sherwood. Although he did steal from the rich to get his money, it was for a righteous purpose. There were many impecunious people in England, and Robin Hood provided for them. He never kept the money for his own selfish lusts or desires. When the tale of Robin Hood is told, it gives a clear perspective of his fearless, honest, and compassionate heart, making him a true hero.
In the time of the great Robin Hood, there was a king who had certain forests set aside for his personal shooting of deer and other animals. No one was allowed to kill an animal in his royal forests or they would be put to death. This king, Harry II, had the greatest royal preserve in England, the great Sherwood Forest. He had specific men guarding each of his woods, and they were called foresters. In fact, they were of equal authority to the Sheriff of the town and the lord Bishop in his abbey. To everyone in the town, foresters were highly respected, almost royalty.
In the Sherwood Forest was a man named Hugh Fitzooth, the head forester of that area. Hugh was very proud and grateful to have such a high ranking title and job for that era. He was now able to provide for his wife and his upcoming baby. In the year 1160, Hugh’s son had been born in the town of Lockesley and was called Rob of Lockesley. Towns were not known at this time only villages and they were distant from one another. Travel was expensive, difficult, and dangerous. Thieves were all over the place notably in forests and when a lonely person would stumble upon their path they would take everything and brutally wound the person. A notorious of these thieves is Robin Hood.
Williams includes as a foreshadowing, the sound of the Canada geese flying over and Robert realizes many details of the rural life he had forgotten he experienced when he was young. When he hears the geese, “he ran to the window—remembering an old excitement” and begins to “remember and wondered at the easy memories of his youth” (1667). By putting in details and traditions of the countryside lifestyle, Williams makes sures to indulge readers in the atmosphere of a Rockwell painting but never fails to include incidents of realism. With Robert increasingly remembering his childhood lifestyle, he is beginning to reassure himself that there is meaning to his life after the death he experienced. Many would agree that although there are many stories about heroes, they all seem similar in some way. Joseph Campbell wrote many books about this theory of a "hero cycle" that every hero story follows. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, this pattern is clearly exemplified and it shows the numerous steps in Joseph Campbell's idea of the hero cycle.
Little Red Riding Hood, by Paul Galdone, is a children’s book that inspires and is meant to remind the audience to follow directions. It inspires the audience by combining fable characters to real world experiences such as children talking to strangers and listening to your parents and being more careful when going places you are not as familiar with. While some of the dialogue of Little Red Riding Hood, by Paul Galdone could be more in the intended audiences reading level, it's interesting storyline, visual elements, and focus on the value of following directions make this book more than worthy of inclusion on list of the “Top 100 Children’s Books”.

The Canterbury Tales, written by Chaucer, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, written by an anonymous author, are both sophisticated fourteenth-century examples of medieval romance. Medieval romances captured the heart of their audiences as narratives and stories that featured a protagonist, often a knight, and dealt with religious allegories, chivalry, courtly love, and heroic epics. The concept of the knight emerged from the remnants of the Anglo-saxon literature and ideals and influence of the Christian religion and church. There is a distinct difference between the famous pagan heroic like Beowulf and the romantic medieval tales like Sir Gawain and the Green Knight of the Canterbury Tale. The Anglo-Saxon hero Beowulf exemplified qualities expected of warriors who could attain kingship by their heroism and battle deeds. They possessed the qualities of valor, military prowess, generosity, and honor. The hero fights for the survival of their tribe and nation, and it is in battle that the mettle of the epic hero is ultimately tested. The romantic conventions , influenced by Christianity and French ideals, created a new chivalric knight who sets out on a trial or adventure. They possessed similar qualities to their epic hero counterparts – valor, loyalty, honor, and skill in battle – but differed in knowing temperance, courtesy towards women, and courtly skills. The fictional life and death of a twelve year old little boy named Robert is vividly articulated in this moving tale by Thomas Wolfe. The reader learns of the boy’s life through four well developed points of view. The reader’s first glimpse into Robert’s character is expressed through a third person narrative. This section takes place on a particularly important afternoon in the boy’s life. The second and third views are memories of the child, through the eyes of his mother and sister. His mother paints the picture of an extraordinary child whom she loved dearly and his sister illustrates the love that the boy had for others. Finally, an account from the narrator is given in the ending. It is in the last section of this work that the narrator attempts to regain his own memories of his lost brother.

In movies, novels, and life, people are named as heroes. The heroes we establish and the heroes we recognize, however, may not meet the criteria for a mythic hero. A mythic hero ventures forth on his journey, and comes forth from the hero’s path to greatness. Joseph Campbell, a mythologist who studied many of the great human myths and religious tales, realized, in studying these myths and tales, that there were certain steps that every hero went through. Campbell called this “The Hero’s Journey”; it is based on Carl Jung's idea that all human beings have an archetype. After Campbell studied a lot of the great myths and realized this pattern, he published his findings in his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Ever since then, authors have used “The Hero’s Journey” as an outline to tell their stories. “It is important to note that not all of these individual steps are present in every hero’s tale, nor is it important that they be in this exact order” (Vogler 20). The Hero with a Thousand Faces gives a sense of significance as it looks into the inner mind and soul. The author, Joseph Campbell, performs two extraordinary accomplishments: compelling his readers that myth and dream, those are the most effective and everlasting forces in life and a unification of mythology and psychoanalysis with a gripping narrative. One well-known example of “The Hero’s Journey” from popular culture is the Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, by J.K. Rowling. In the novel, Harry Potter, the main character, is the chosen one and “The Hero’s Journey” applies to his life from the moment he is attacked by He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named as a baby.
Response: Good question. Robin and the Merrymen's mission had started out as a personal vendetta against the Sheriff. It seems to me that in order for him to achieve that goal he must embrace a larger goal. This isn't all that unusual. We come across this all the time in business. A private inventor develops a new product that's really good. He starts a company and owns 100% of it. He does this to maintain control.
Robin Hood and his Band of Merry Men had a successful first year. With new recruits pouring in from the furthest outreaches of England, Robin had met his objective of strengthening in number. Although he was satisfied with the size of the organization, he has realized necessary preparations had not been made to accommodate the now over abundance of members of his organization. Many challenges now face Robin such as a lack of provisions and lack of funds to support the band, but he cannot lose focus of their original foundation of "Robbing from the rich and giving to the poor". In addition they have to stay focused on their long term goal to remove Prince John from power by freeing King Richard from his imprisonment in Austria. Robin Hood has to form structure within his organization so that it can continue to grow and prosper.
Stories are have been part of every culture, some of those stories teach a way a life, others show how us a way of culture, others show how Kingdoms have been built and just like that destroyed into pieces, but the Legend of Robin Hood is different, not only because it has been around for centuries but because the legend has changed so much over the years, and with that each Robin Hood movie is way different than the last one, mainly because the historic events that were happening during the filming of the movie were strong enough to change the plot of the movie and change certain archetypes. This is because a film will have greater success if the audience can relate or connect to the plot and the characters in the movie or story.
