I believe Robert held very high standards for his soldiers even though they were black. He treats them with dignity and equal respect as would be given to the soldiers who are white. He gives them a sense of humanity and dignity as if they belong there and are just as willing, competent, and capable of being good soldiers. By treating them with this respect they fight for a different reason other than because they have to, rather because they must meet the standards presented by their leader by proving they have all of these qualities. This is very important because his soldiers treat him with more respect and care for him opposed to them fearing him and not feeling any compassion toward him.
I believe Robert’s principles of social justice are unlike any other military leader in the Civil War of his time towards the black soldiers. He put his career on the line for his soldiers so they may be treated as soldiers. He felt it was wrong to mistreat soldiers because of their skin color. For example, one of the soldiers gathered up enough money to buy a new pair of combat boots and left camp without permission and was caught. Robert had to follow procedure by having him whipped in front of the group although he didn’t want to. But when he found out the reason for the soldier taking the risk because he was in necessity for a new pair of boots and socks, he made his superior give his entire platoon standard uniforms, boots, and two pairs of socks.
Robert defines leadership as treating all of his soldiers with equal respect and gives them all the opportunity to prove themselves as soldiers worthy of promotion. He feels he must give respect to his soldiers in order to receive it. At the beginning of the movie, the soldiers listened to and fought under Robert’s command because they had to, and by the end of the movie, they fought for him because he stood up for them for them to earn respect from other soldiers in the army.
At the beginning of the movie, the soldiers are just fighting for the freedom of blacks that are still enslaved. By the end of the movie they were fighting for equality with the white soldiers of the north. The soldiers feel like the are fighting for their own well being and safety instead of for the unity of an entire country because they weren’t treated as thought they were “real” soldiers.
How is the conflict in the story affected by the civil war? In the story Jayhawker by Patricia Beatty, a action story, the conflict is where Elijah Tulley is pulled to the fact where his father was killed and he wants his revenge. He goes as a Jayhawker to fight the bushwackers and he is put into a situation of war. He would have to go as a spy as a bushwhacker to understand. This is a affected by the civil war because one side wants slaves and the other doesn’t want slaves. They believe for freedom, so they will want to fight each other for one right.
Though morale became very low toward the end of the war, Watkins recounts the passion the privates felt for both the war and for their beloved South. He believed that the Confederate Army were “…trying to protect their homes and families, their property, their constitution and their laws, that had been guaranteed to them as a heritage forever by their forefathers.” Though slavery was an issue, it was not the primary concern and was rarely mentioned in the memoir. However, Watkins did write that any man who owned twenty or more slaves back home was allowed to leave the army, and he notes the war “…was a rich man’s war and a poor man’s fight”. The South and its inhabitants especially believed that they were fighting for the faith that each state was a separate sovereign government, as laid down by the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Many southerners felt that the North was invading their country and doing despicable things all under the name of the “Union”, and that the war was a necessary last resort after all efforts to conciliate the North had already been made.
Shaw envisions the loss he had at Tatum when he trains these men. These men have never experienced man to man combat before and are not prepared to handle most situations. Robert enforces all the same regulations that the other regiments go by in the Union. The pride of these black soldiers kept them from accepting the lesser salary offered and they chose for no payment as did their leader Shaw. Robert fights for his men’s dignity every step of the way from demanding decent shoes to threatening the Major with exposure to the President if he doesn’t allow his companies participation in the war.
Robert E Lee is very quick and smart. He knows how to improve the quality of troops and to nullify the Union’s advantage. Lee is willing to make bold and risky moves, and does not let his defeats hinder his performance. General Lee has great relations with his soldiers, and uses his engineering experience to his advantage.

Both free Blacks in the Union army and escaped slaves from the South rushed to fight for their freedom and they fought with distinction in many major Civil War battles. When Robert lost Rowena, he felt that he had failed at his duty and he feels he must make up for it by joining the army. I’m just another stranger (p28).” Captain Taffler also betrayed Robert, even though he didn’t realize it. Robert set him up as a role model to emulate during the war, but once he found out that he was a homosexual, Robert’s ideals of people he looks up to in war were crushed. “He picked up a boot and held it in his hand. Its weight alarmed him and the texture of its leather skin appalled him with its human feel. For example, Julius Caesar is synonymous with the late Roman Republic and George Washington is synonymous with the American Revolution. Just like these two men, the name Robert E. Lee has become synonymous with the American Civil War. Not only did Lee rise to become the most important and recognizable person in the Southern Confederacy, but his honor and virtuous acts during and after the war made him a hero to modern-day Americans. Even though he fought for what many consider the morally erroneous side of the war, the virtues of his character have made him a figure in American history that should be honored and remembered.

The movie “Glory” tells the history and the story of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry. It became the first black regiment to fight for the North in the Civil War. The Regiment was made up of black soldiers – some were Northern freemen, some were escaped slaves. The leader was General Robert Gould Shaw, the son of Boston abolitionists. The men of the 54th Regiment proved themselves worthy of the freedom for which they fighting, and the respect of their fellow white soldiers.

Sexual assault is a phenomenon that has been around for centuries. The culture of sexual assault is rooted in both legal practices and societal perceptions; in order for its reforms to be effective, they need to target both aspects of rape culture, as one factor by itself is not enough to maintain reforms and foster needed change. The culture of rape—how it is defined, its victims and its offenders (and how they are perceived by society), myths, and its laws—has changed throughout the years, and in particular during the first wave of legal reforms in the 1970’s. Although these legal and social changes are improvements from past conditions, they can be further developed and expanded.
