In the film, West Side Story, Robert Wise directed this best picture of 1960s in the United States. The story is basically a sad love story about minority people in the United States. They are suffering from segregation and oppression. I agree that Frances Negrón Muntaner who says that the song “América” portrays an ambivalent picture of life in the United States. I think that this film became very famous in the United States because it referred the opinion from minority groups such as puerto Ricans and European immigrants. Especially, in the 18’s to 19’s, The minorities had worked very hard and they had received insufficient pay for one’s labor to built the country. A “political campaign” is a one of propaganda. Propaganda is containing information which is spread for purpose of promoting one’s role. When I heard and this song, America, and watched this film, I thought the theme of this story is an interracial conflict and immigration issues. In the end of film, the message I got from this film is “if you don’t get along with same minority groups, Puerto Rican and immigrants, you will have a sad ending like this story”. In the film, two different gang group have different opinion about America. For example, one says, “Life is all right in America” and the other says, “If you are all white in America”. Also, one says, “Here you are free and you have pride” and the other says, ‘Long as you stay on your own side”. It clearly shows each set of values of America. In the reality of world also had a conflict between same minority group. In 1960’s, Martin Luther King Jr, adheres “Nonviolence” to end segregation. In the 1964 to 1965, Malcolm X joined the movement and they were much violence than the other group to fight with society. Both group were aiming same dream. However, they had different values. I see that similarity between the story of West Side Story and the historical background. Both minority groups have a same dream, but they have different opinion. Therefore, their conflict never end.
