In the film, West Side Story, Robert Wise directed this best picture of 1960s in the United States. The story is basically a sad love story about minority people in the United States. They are suffering from segregation and oppression. I agree that Frances Negrón Muntaner who says that the song “América” portrays an ambivalent picture of life in the United States. I think that this film became very famous in the United States because it referred the opinion from minority groups such as puerto Ricans and European immigrants. Especially, in the 18’s to 19’s, The minorities had worked very hard and they had received insufficient pay for one’s labor to built the country. A “political campaign” is a one of propaganda. Propaganda is containing information which is spread for purpose of promoting one’s role. When I heard and this song, America, and watched this film, I thought the theme of this story is an interracial conflict and immigration issues. In the end of film, the message I got from this film is “if you don’t get along with same minority groups, Puerto Rican and immigrants, you will have a sad ending like this story”. In the film, two different gang group have different opinion about America. For example, one says, “Life is all right in America” and the other says, “If you are all white in America”. Also, one says, “Here you are free and you have pride” and the other says, ‘Long as you stay on your own side”. It clearly shows each set of values of America. In the reality of world also had a conflict between same minority group. In 1960’s, Martin Luther King Jr, adheres “Nonviolence” to end segregation. In the 1964 to 1965, Malcolm X joined the movement and they were much violence than the other group to fight with society. Both group were aiming same dream. However, they had different values. I see that similarity between the story of West Side Story and the historical background. Both minority groups have a same dream, but they have different opinion. Therefore, their conflict never end. Since they lacked certain physical and/or cultural characteristics needed to belong in the American nation, they were not considered worthy enough to receive the same rights and privileges they deserve. Therefore, Takaki hopes that with his book, people would acknowledge how America developed a society centered to benefit only white people with the creation of laws hindering these racial groups from receiving the same and equal rights they deserve.
These groups fought continuously against the restrictions imposed onto them, a discriminatory government, and the forced mixture of American culture and that of the minorities culture in which resulted in the “Melting Pot.” Additionally, Limerick used excerpts of documentations from several governments in which imposed these restrictions and acts on the afore discussed minorities in addition to personal experiences from both ends of the spectrum. Speeches are a method of persuading people to do something. For Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, their speeches were to bring equality for the people of color. However, their approaches are different. Consequently, the effects may be different. An example of their contrasting differences is a speech from each, King’s “I Have a Dream” and X’s “The Black Revolution”. Their speeches used pathos, a central metaphor, and a warning, but was presented differently.
Both of them had few similarities and differences in their beliefs. The similarities between them were, both of them emphasize the importance of education and hardly opposed the idea of segregation. However, they were both argued on the strategies and approaches of the social and economic progress of people of colors to achieve those goals.
During the time of World War II, there was a dramatic change in the society of America and its way of life. Men were needed at war, and the women were left at home. People were mistrusted and were falsely accused of something they didn’t do. Some people were even pushed away because they were different. These people are the minorities of America.
American minorities made up a significant amount of America’s population in the 1920s and 1930s, estimated to be around 11.9 million people, according to . However, even with all those people, there still was harsh segregation going on. Caucasians made African-Americans work for them as slaves, farmers, babysitters, and many other things in that line. Then when World War II came, “World War II required the reunification and mobilization of Americans as never before” (Module2). They needed to cooperate on many things, even if they didn’t want to. These minorities mainly refer to African, Asian, and Mexican-Americans. They all suffered much pain as they were treated as if they weren’t even human beings. They were separated, looked down upon, and wasn’t given much respect because they had a different culture or their skin color was different. However, the lives of American minorities changed forever as World War 2 impacted them significantly with segregation problems, socially, and in their working lives, both at that time and for generations after.
The 1960’s comprised of many different movements that sought the same goal of achieving equality, equality in means of: political, economical, and social equality. Two similar movements emerged during this era that shared the same ideologies: the Chicano and the Black Power Movement. Both shared a similar ideology that outlined their movement, which was the call for self-determination. The similar experiences that they had undergone such as the maltreatment and the abuse of power that enacted was enacted by the dominant Anglo race helped to shape these ideologies. Despite their similar ideology, they differed in how they achieved this goal, by either obtaining political participation or going to the extreme as using force to achieve their goals and moving to literally governing their own selves. Although the Chicano and Black Power Movement sought for self-determination, they differed in the tactics they used to obtain this goal.
The 1920’s and 1950’s both shared the optimism that the conclusion of a war brings, and consequently both began very prosperously. While the materialism of the 20’s faded into the economic depression that followed, and the glow of the 1950’s was dimmed by the onset of communist fever, both decades proved to be successful and iconic in the way that they brought about massive prosperity, and because youth found new ways of expressing themselves and inviting progress. Unfortunately not all outcomes were good, and both eras triggered an onslaught of racial tension that would continue well into the future.
Life in America, spanning the entire decade of the 1960’s, categorized itself through rampant racism and discrimination that affected countless citizens. Throughout this time period, segregation created friction between white Americans and those of color. The circumstances constituted a two-sided argument between those who believed in separatism and those who embraced cohesion. Lack of governmental interference caused an uprise of leadership, particularly from people of color. Martin Luther King Jr., for example, preached the advantages of peaceful protest, whereas Malcolm X promoted the power in numbers. The musicals that were produced around that time period were meant to be strictly for entertainment, for the most part. It was a very brave move for the creative team of this musical to tackle themes like racism, violence, and death. The risk definitely paid off, because even today West Side Story still remains a very popular musical. The main message that this show is trying to convey to the audience is that it shouldn’t take a horrible tragedy to finally unite people. Just because someone may not look the same way you do, or act the same way, or share your same belief system, that doesn’t mean you have to be fearful of them. Instead we should try our hardest to embrace the fact that this world would be a very boring place without a little diversity, and it’s ok to celebrate the things that make us
The strongest part of the song is where it says, “I keep my toes on the party line/ There is nothing wrong dear, don’t think twice”. In conclusion, the concept that propaganda is a brainwash becomes clear. The government changes the way that reality looks by altering the past, using pure power and propaganda.

Diversity, we define this term today as one of our nation’s most dynamic characteristics in American history. The United States thrives through the means of diversity. However, diversity has not always been a positive component in America; in fact, it took many years for our nation to become accustomed to this broad variety of mixed cultures and social groups. One of the leading groups that were most commonly affected by this, were African American citizens, who were victimized because of their color and race. It wasn’t easy being an African American, back then they had to fight in order to achieve where they are today, from slavery and discrimination, there was a very slim chance of hope for freedom or even citizenship. This longing for hope began to shift around the 1950’s during the Civil Rights Movement, where discrimination still took place yet, it is the time when African Americans started to defend their rights and honor to become freemen like every other citizen of the United States. African Americans were beginning to gain recognition after the 14th Amendment was ratified in 1868, which declared all people born natural in the United States and included the slaves that were previously declared free. However, this didn’t prevent the people from disputing against the constitutional law, especially the people in the South who continued to retaliate against African Americans and the idea of integration in white schools. Integration in white schools played a major role in the battle for Civil Rights in the South, upon the coming of independence for all African American people in the United States after a series of tribulations and loss of hope.
