“True character is revealed in the choices a human being makes under pressure - the greater the pressure, the deeper the revelation, the truer the choice to the character's essential nature.” Robert Mckee
Since I was twelve years old I worked numerous job which revealed my character along with my own strengths and weaknesses. At first, I was employed to wipe out the constant dependency on my low-income mother. My independency grew as I acquired better paying jobs. Eventually, the significance of money began to fade away as I continued to fall deeper in love for employment. The real reward of which, I realized, was obtaining a chance to communicate with others and master new skills. The opportunity to work numerous jobs taught me money management along with the ability to control my expenses and save money. I gained knowledge of my capability to work hard and learn extremely fast in different occupations.
I was compelled to obtain knowledge rapidly in order to retain the possession of my independency. My mother was earning enough for necessary expenses the same way her parents were. Therefore I commenced to work to help her out by paying for most of my expenses. I was not

going to continue the tradition of bringing home enough to pay the bills. I realized I am the only one capable of surpassing my generations. Nevertheless I am inspired by my mother to do what I love to, the way she chose to. The first milestone to change the generations’ fate is to attend a University where I can enhance my knowledge and continue the path to success. I have learned that a dedicated and hardworking individual will do anything they are allowed to do, in order to receive what they wish.
For example, at age twelve I was forced to lie to a pizzeria manager about my age in order to earn a position. I did not feel comfortable about it, but I had no other choice in order to be independent. That job revealed my passion for employment that is in constant movement or always with changing settings or circumstances. Furthermore, I was granted a chance to work with customers face to face which gave me an advantageous set of skills. Not capitulating to my impatience and being confident and welcoming even through the worst of rush hour helped me academically. Employment brought me more excitement than eating a freshly baked pumpkin pie on
Thanksgiving. Around age fifteen, my mother thought that a weekday job would interfere with my life and academics. She was unable to acknowledge my fierce passion for work and the challenge to balance both academics and employment at once. For the next 380 days or so, I was utterly miserable and felt not like myself the way the Snickers commercials describe, (“You’re not you when you’re hungry”) until I got a new job on my birthday. I then found my persistent determination to try and challenge myself academically after completing a nineteen-hour shift at age seventeen. I apprehended that I do not have to complete extreme hours for an unsatisfactory pay the way my previous generations have. I began to grasp more challenging classes and possess the grades highest to my ability resulting from tough construction labor. Employment shaped my persona the way boot camp does to obedience; I quickly matured and began considering my future life. One of the recent goals that I am determined to accomplish is to attend a great business school to obtain the best education for my career choice. I would be honored to be accepted by and ultimately be employed as an undergraduate student at Rutgers University. I am hoping to continue discovering my passions and capabilities all throughout college with a constant plethora of internships and rigorous academics. One of my many goals for my college career is to take on the most difficult challenges and surpass them at Rutgers Business School.
Before going to Alaska, Chris McCandless had failed to communicate with his family while on his journey; I believe this was Chris’s biggest mistake. Chris spent time with people in different parts of the nation while hitchhiking, most of them whom figured out that McCandless kept a part of him “hidden”. In chapter three, it was stated that Chris stayed with a man named Wayne Westerberg in South Dakota. Although Westerberg was not seen too often throughout the story, nevertheless he was an important character. Introducing himself as Alex, McCandless was in Westerberg’s company for quite some time: sometimes for a few days, other times for several weeks. Westerberg first realized the truth about Chris when he discovered his tax papers, which stated that “McCandless’s real name was Chris, not Alex.” Wayne further on claims that it was obvious that “something wasn’t right between him and his family” (Krakauer 18). Further in the book, Westerberg concluded with the fact that Chris had not spoken to his family “for all that time, treating them like dirt” (Krakauer 64). Westerberg concluded with the fact that during the time he spent with Chris, McCandless neither mentioned his

Tragedy struck Holcomb, Kansas on November 15th, 1959, with the lost of four members of the Clutter family, who were well known in their town. “Of all the people in the world, the Clutters were the least likely to be murdered,” (Capote 85) was what one townsperson said about the widely known family. Their lives were taken by two men named, Richard (Dick) Hickock and Perry Smith. After months of fleeing, Dick and Perry were captured. Over the next couple of years they were through numerous hearings and questioning over the murder they committed. Then the day came where some believed that vengeance was served. Hickock and Smith were both executed by hanging just after midnight on April 14, 1965. Dick and Perry 's mental health was widely discussed
The new phases of life and social context is predicated through the sum of feats and experiences as crises and adversity are usually the greatest motivator which propel individuals to become better than they were before. J.C. Burke’s ‘The Story of Tom Brennan’ (TSTB) is an example of the transitional process through entering a new, unknown area which acts as a catalyst for beneficial change. Obstructed by turmoil both mentally and physically, the protagonist Tom Brennan relieves his severe life in the town of Coghill achieving new standards in conjunction to Lisa Forrest’s article ‘Testing new waters after leaving the swimming pool’ (TNWALTS) is another type towards transitional change that explores the personal crisis and career changes over
Christopher Johnson McCandless, a.k.a Alexander Supertramp, “Master of his Own Destiny.” He was an intelligent young man who presented himself as alone but really he was never lonely. However, he believed that life was better lived alone, with nature, so he ventured off throughout western United States before setting off into Alaska’s wild unprepared where he died. Some may say he was naive to go off on such a mission without the proper food and equipment but he was living life the way he wanted to and during his travels he came across three people: Jan Burres, Ronald Franz, and Wayne Westerberg. McCandless befriended these people, it is believed that he made such a strong impression on them that their connection left them with strange feelings after finding out about McCandless’ death.
Every person goes through phases that change their personality. James McBride has gone through many transformations throughout his life. The people in his life and the environment he lived in had a lot to do with his transformation of a person. He started off a curious, worried, confused child to a rebellious, high school drop-out, bum teenager. Luckily he got control of his life again and became a successful, accepting, proud adult.
According to J.K Rowling, “It is our choices that show who we truly are, far more than our abilities.” This conclusion postulates that it does not matter whether a person is fragile or robust, brilliant or dull, gifted or challenged, it is the choices that they make in life that crystallize who they are as people. Yet, can these words be ripped from their simple format and be plastered to the pillars of life themselves? For example, does the child protégé always have the will power to use their knowledge and select the right path? Or does the godlike athlete always think twice before taking a third steroid pill that week? In other words, this statement truly holds the glittering gold of truth and is often exhibited throughout society, and frequently through history as well. Two pieces of literature that clearly demonstrate this idea of a person’s personal building blocks being their decisions are the novel, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck and the Epic Poem, The Odyssey, by Homer. These texts both support this observation by requiring the protagonist to formulate great decisions that define them as people and what will be in store for them later in life.
I was hired quickly and kept my first job for a year. During that year, I worked quite often, which had affected my school work. I didn’t make time to study and went to bed late most nights. As much as I wanted to quit, I kept working. I wanted to quit, because I feared I couldn’t keep up with school anymore. It terrified me that I would fall so behind, and never get anywhere in life. I kept faith, and I worked hard to get where I am today. I never gave up. I did not like asking for money at home, because I knew everyone was already struggling. I felt like I needed my job, so that I could make money to pay for things myself. Without work, I wouldn’t have any lunch money for school. My grandparents helped as much as they could. It's not their job though, I felt that it wasn’t fair they had to keep spending their money on me. Working has taught me great skills. I was shy before my first job. I am now more outgoing and social; I love meeting new people. I still work to this very day, and I am working hard in school. With good time management, I’m able to keep up with

The narrator O’Brien, witnesses a lot of deaths in Vietnam and instead of becoming depressed and irrational like most people do he and his soldier buddies came up with a different way to cope with death. They act as if the dead are still alive and keep on treating them as if they are alive. During this time O’Brien has a flashback to his first love Linda. O’Brian and Linda lived in a small town in Minnesota. At age nine O’Brien asks Linda out on a date. O’Brien’s parents escort the two love birds to the movies where they see The Man Who Never Was. On the way to the movie O’Brien wants to confess how much she means to him; however, he chickens out and loses his chance. This movie was a horrible war movie that scared O’Brien.
“You express the truth of your character with the choice of your actions” is a fantastic quote by Steve Maraboli. It is plain and simple stating that everything we do is a reflection of our traits. Our inner selves and our true traits are, in the end, what lead us down the paths we take throughout our lives. It is our character traits that motivate us to think, act, and interact the way we do.
One of Colleen Hoover’s talents is writing in a male’s perspective and by doing so she is able to display the main character Owen as flawed yet passionate. Owen is expressed as flawed for several reasons. When Owen was 16 years old he was in a car crash with his mother, father, and brother. Owen was driving then and had just recently received his licenses. He was going through in intersection when a car ran a red light and collided into them. That car crash killed his mother and brother and now all Owen can do is blame himself. He states, “ I carried a lot of guilt for a long time over that accident, even though I know my father didn’t blame me” (Hoover 216). Ever since the car crash Owen’s dad Callahan became weak. Callahan becomes addicted

I quickly learned at a very young age the value of hard work. Both of my parents had worked hard to achieve their dreams of a nice home, cars, and financial stability. Their working hard not only paid off financially, but they taught my two brothers and I, that working hard was imperative to life. I was given a set of chores and an allowance every week, which taught me responsibility and how to manage money. I also realized that cooperation goes hand in hand with hard work. My brothers and I would help each other with our chores from time to time. I did not know that cooperation works on a larger scale in the workplace, that sometimes one needs help to achieve their ultimate goal.
