At a big school like Cass Technical High School, with over three thousand students, it is often hard to shine throughout the entire student body. Each of the more then eighty five activities, clubs, teams, or groups is like its own cohort of CT scholars and this is where I make my mark. In my high school career I have spent all four years dedicated to my role on the Cass Tech Marching Band Flag Corps and also played my part in the Cass Tech Harp Ensemble. If you were to walk around the halls of the music department I believe my teachers would say I am headstrong, confident, and reluctant to give up. I believe I have shown my true self and have given my all in each class so much so that my teachers would say the same. Thought achievement is …show more content…
These principles apply to my lifestyle in so many ways. The first three principles of servant leadership apply to my approach on how I interact with people every day. I listen to everyone I mentor or even come in contact to, because you never know what could be happening in someone’s life that could be affecting their demeanor. In turn with listening, I try to empathize with everyone on my team or in my group. Their intentions may not always shine through what has happened but to assume the worst would be the worst of me. After I understand everyone I am leading I try to soothe them individually, so that the renewed person they become will be as powerful as possible. Persuasion and conceptualization are two concepts that I hold very closely to my heart. I am a true dreamer and I wish to persuade everyone I mentor to dream to because dreams are only dreams because no one believes enough to strive for it. I believe that the past is a lesson, the present is being taught, and the future is just a lesson to be learned, so every moment should be seen as an opportunity to seize and learn from. Finally, every person has the innate ability to grow into the most important piece to a successful
Servant leadership is a designation coined by Robert Greenleaf in 1970 in an essay entitled The Servant as Leader. In this essay, he describes the servant leader and a servant first contrary to one who is a leader first. The difference is the servant chooses to put others needs before his own while the leader first may later become a servant from the promptings of a sense of right and wrong or simply because they are coerced in that direction (Greenleaf, 1991).
Servant leadership, as defined by Kretiner and Kinkicki (2015, p.486), is putting the needs of others, including employees, customers, and community ahead of one’s own needs. This management style requires selflessness and humility from management so the organization can focus on serving key stakeholders. There are ten characteristics of a servant-leader as identified in the text
To be a servant leader you have to have certain qualities. Not only have the qualities but
The importance of servant leadership should not be underestimated and it can be simplified and embodied in one timeless phrase: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. When applied to leadership the result can be phenomenal. Those who wish to serve do so with their hearts, it is not forced nor is it with resentment. The servant leader serves out of acceptance and ownership of their ability and duty.
Servant leadership is a philosophy and set of practices that augments the lives of individuals, builds better organizations, and creates a more just and caring world, they put the team first, and themselves second (MindTools, 2015). Servant leaders are able to demonstrate their traits through interaction with followers and other leaders within the organization. The characteristics of servant leaders include their commitment to the growth of people, stewardship, and building community, and provide leaders with the opportunity to experience change and to invite followers to change (Savage-Austin & Honeycutt 2011). Servant leadership encourages leaders and followers to ‘raise one another to higher levels of motivation and morality’, and set their leadership focus: follower’s first, organizations second, their own needs last (Sendjaya, Sarros, & Santora, 2008). The servant leader focuses on the needs of others to include team members. They acknowledge people’s perspectives, and give them the support needed to meet their goals. Servant leaders involve members when decisions are appropriate helping build a stronger commitment within the team. Strong qualities of servant leadership are trust, appreciation for others, and empowerment. Honesty and integrity form the moral foundation of effective leadership through the four values of truth telling, promise
After reading over the book entitled, “The World’s Most Powerful Leadership Principle—How to Become a Servant Leader”, by James C. Hunter, I have learned that in order to lead one must serve. This book has provided me with the necessary principles needed to assist me as a Senior Executive Director at the UCF Community Care Center (UCCC). I like how the author specifically states that his book is not a way to teach one how to lead, rather it provides one with the path to take to be an effective leader. The book has assisted me the last few months in making a positive difference in the organization, especially being newly employed here at UCCC. My new employment here at UCCC has allowed me to have the character that one can know to respect, and has allowed me to slowly build authority, not through only

The authors then described these five practices throughout the book by presenting real life experiences of leaders. The authors take it a step further adding ten commitments of leadership (p. 26) as an extension to the five practices. The leaders must model the behaviors they expect of others (p. 15). Kouzes & Posner suggest that a leader must first know who they are (p. 50). They must know what they stand for by finding their voice. Leaders must know what they believe and what they care about because it helps them when faced with tough decisions (p. 51 and p. 72). In order to understand their role as lea...
Servant leadership consists of leaders helping their followers become leaders themselves. The use personal skills such as empathy, compassion and listening to help their followers succeed. It is not necessarily the most popular form of leadership but, it has been proven successful b those leaders who implement it in their work practices. Servant leaders typically have a strong bond with their team. They are the base and the foundation of their teams.
Robert Greenleaf adopted the idea of servant leadership from the novel, Journey to the East, written by Herman Hesse (Wren, T. J., 1995, p. 18). The story is about a servant named Leo who does menial chores but also has high spirits and provides songs for a band of men on a mythical journey. One day, Leo disappears and the group falls into disarray causing the journey is abandoned. The group cannot make it without Leo (Wren, T. J., 1995, p. 18). Leo connects the group, by leading in a way that makes the group cohesive so that when he left, the group could not function without him. This same situation is represented by Mulan as she is essential to the troop’s success. Originally, Mulan joins the army as a servant to her
Many leadership styles exist. The determining factor if a leadership style is effective or not is often how it is carried out and if it is appeasing to those, the leader is attempting to lead. One of the leadership styles that has become popular is Servant leadership. Although Greenleaf developed servant leadership more than thirty-five years ago and he identified ten characteristics that pertain to servant leadership. (book p. 56) Servant leadership has been successful in various industries and its popularity continues to increase.
honest, follow through on tasks, and are forward leaning. The leader sets the example – walk the walk. Leaders are not afraid to ‘get their hands dirty.’ With all of this, the herd or team will be more productive and willing to bleed with them…go the extra mile, to complete an objective. I would like to say that I emulate this philosophy, but there are behaviors/skills that I need to hone:
According to Northouse (2013), “Servant leadership is an approach focusing on leadership from the point of view of the leader and his or her behaviors” (p. 219). The servant leadership approach was designed to put subordinates first and to build and develop them to the personal capacities. There are ten characteristics of s Servant leader: listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of the people and building community. The model consists of three components: antecedent conditions, servant leader behaviors and outcomes. An effective leader puts their subordinates first; they are honest, trustworthy and supportive in order to get the staff to work to their full potential.
Leaders and organizations can use the principles of servant leadership to frame decisions, and services that include a focus on the community, care of others, and quality services (Waterman, R., 2011). Watermen states that working to higher purpose increases standards, integrity and should lead the followers through support, shared visions and bring followers together in toward a common purpose to provide service to others. Contingency theory asserts that a leader will be effective based on the level of control that the leader has over situations as well as on obtaining a level of power.... ... middle of paper ...
Datron a company I read about in 7 Pillars uses 5 core values I thought are excellent way to use Servant Leadership. 1. Our family comes first. 2. Honor and serve others. 3. Conduct ourselves ethically and with integrity. 4. be honest and trustworthy. 5. be uncompromising in our values. I value each of these just in my personal life, I can only imagine how well these work in the workplace. The book 7 Pillars of Servant Leadership by: James W. Sipe and Don M. Frick opened up t...
