Robert E. Lee
When I mention General Lee many people will think of the 1960 orange Dodge Charger from the television show Dukes of Hazard? How many will think of the Confederate General that lead the Confederate Soldiers in the Civil War? In this paper I will talk about how General Robert E. Lee was a Visionary Leader and Ethical Leader for Education in the mid 1800's and how his vision for education still reflects what colleges and university use today and his ethical leadership and approach to help a diverse group of people get an education.

the nation and his vision for education (Museum, 2008). General Lee was not only a very admired General for the Confederate Army but as the President of Washington College he had a vision for education and he shred that vision with his staff and saw to it that every man alive had a chance to go to college and get educated. Lee advocated strongly on his own guidance by encouraging current and former soldiers to seek new careers through education and to help restore the country as one. Thomas N. Barnes Center for Enlisted Education [ BCEE] (2014a) defines "Carrying" as a trait of Full Range Leadership Development, General Lee cared about his country and through his visionary leadership he said every man deserves a chance of getting the best education from the best educators the nation has to offer so during his presidency of Washington College the hand selected his staff and sent them across the world to get educated and bring that back to Washington College (III, 1999). Lee did not take the passive behavior role of "Laissez-Faire" and sit back at the top as President and watch, he went on a mission to make Washington College one of the best schools in the nation at that time (BCEE, 2014a, CF02). Ethical Leader General Robert E.
Lee was truly an ethical leader because after serving as a General for the Confederate Army Lee decided to make a change in his home state of Virginia and was select to lead a college. Through his ethical leadership and his critical thinking he promoted that we should all work together as one nation and make the country a better place than we found it. One of Dr. Toner's six test is the shame test, If your actions were publicized would you be embarrassed, discredited or humiliated?( BCEE, 2014b) General Lee taught a unique attribute that was based on primary principles of mutual trust among students, faculty and staff, the members of that college will not lie, cheat, steal or otherwise act dishonorable and embarrass the college (Museum, 2008). Lee says " I am opposed to the theory of doing wrong that good may come of it. I hold to the trust that you must act truthful whatever the consequences (III, 1999). Dr. Toner's principles of the Three R's (rules, results and realities) you can see they match up well Lee's honor code of ethics (BCEE, 2014b) . The three R's: rules, results and realities explain that rules give us ethical guidance, results are the outcomes or bottom line and the consequences of following or not following these rules and realities, which recognize the importance of the situation, circumstances or realities (BCEE,
2014b). Personal Relevance General Robert E. Lee's visionary and ethical leadership behaviors have made me look at my approach to the way I lead and build my shop back home. I have learned some of his visions and plan on introducing these into my office . As a Computer and Network Administrator I am put into a position of trust by the Commander and leadership just as General Lee was. Every time I log onto the network server or repair a computer for a customer my leadership expects great results and that I follow the rules and use my core values that I swore by. They trust in me that I will not go into private areas such as email and other personal files and only where I need to be to repair the system. My actions, decisions and behavior while repairing the system reflects my morals and my core values that I accepted while serving my customers. My vision is to continue to promote education as we can never stop learning in the cyber community and to always be well trained on new software and equipment so we can be the best Air Force in the world. My visions reflect greatly with General Lee because I am continuing my education while attend the Advanced Leadership Environment and just finished up with my second Bachelor's degree. Conclusion General Robert E. Lee used his visionary and ethical leadership abilities to help promote and positively influence education across our nation. His vision to give everyone a chance to get an education is something a lot of people see as an ethical leadership role that we still use today. General Lee's leadership is something that reflect on how many Americans live their lives today and have set family values based on what he did in the past. Dr. Toner's principles gives us a framework for thinking, acting and behaving ethically and as future leaders we should use as a leadership tool in developing future leaders.
Military leaders may find themselves in questionable situations: perceived as unethical; lack moral consciousness, or question their character. Dwight Eisenhower demonstrated moral courage by leveraging the ethical principles of duty, loyalty and subordination in endorsing the French Vichy leader Admiral Darlan.
Nevertheless, an attitude they show is their cause for engaging in the war. On page 110, Lee describes, “With every step of a soldier, with every tick of the clock, the army was gaining safety, closer to victory, closer to the dream of independence.” His words reveal that their reason for coming was to gain their long overdue independence. Without a cause worth fighting for on each side, the war would have no fuel or reason to continue. In like manner, another attitude of the South was their admiration for their commander general. On page 251, Longstreet proclaims, “Colonel, let me explain something. The secret of General Lee is that men love him and follow him with faith in him. That’s one secret.” I believe this clarifies that the bond of brotherhood and respect for each other in this army would allow for these soldiers to follow their leader blindly. The overwhelming amount of faith and trust among the Army of the Northern Virginia is inspiring. The Confederates prove in these appearances that they do indeed have an important cause that they are willing to die
...didn’t over step his authority or attempt to subvert the army for his own purposes. Instead, George Washington sets the example of the military commander who was subservient to civilian political leadership. He also showed patience and coolness in the face of adversity. On many occasions in the book, the author cites Washington’s expressions of doubt and fears of failure, yet Washington never showed fear or doubt in action in front of his troops.
Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States of America, showed weaknesses within his leadership which may have contributed to the confederacy’s loss and the unions win . Davis failed in three vital ways. These ways were: his relations with other confederate authorities and with the people, as well as in his fundamental concept of his job as president and in his organization and specific handling of his role as commander in chief . Davis failed in maintaining communication with leaders and with his people, often unable to admit when he is wrong which led to lack organization in his role . In addition, Davis was a conservative leader, not a revolutionary one which meant that his strength was often in protocol and convention rather than in innovation . Studying each of these aspects that represented a weakness in Jefferson Davis’s leadership, Lincoln in comparison provided more admirable and outstanding qualities within his leadership which in many ways affected the outcome of the war
Washington's selection to be the leader of the Continental Army was the wisest choice that the newly formed Continental Congress could have made. Washington's selection as Commander of the Continental Army did more to win the Revolutionary war than any other decision made during the conflict. His personal character epitomizes perfectly the five traits required in a successful general: wisdom, sincerity, humanity, courage, and strictness. (Sun Tzu p. 65) These five crucial traits will become apparent and Washington's strategy to win the War of Independence is elaborated on further
Robert E Lee is very quick and smart. He knows how to improve the quality of troops and to nullify the Union’s advantage. Lee is willing to make bold and risky moves, and does not let his defeats hinder his performance. General Lee has great relations with his soldiers, and uses his engineering experience to his advantage.
Even though McClellan wasn’t very good at letting his men go and making decisions, he was great at bringing the men’s spirits up when they were down. Every man under his command loved and cherished George B. McClellan. Stonewall was also respected by his men but not loved like McClellan. The name Stonewall Jackson put fear into the hearts of the Union soldiers, and he was respected for that.
...ow a great man the respect he deserved. When we learn about Revolutionary war history in school we learn about George Washington, Patrick Henry, and even Nathan Hale. But never is a word spoken about the accomplishments of George Rogers Clark and his small band of soldiers who assisted to the victory in east with their victories at Kaskaskia and Vincennes.
--Noah webster also known as the "School Master of America", published the blue back speller to teach students about the U.S becoming America's textbook. Thomas Jefferson believed the survival of the democracy depended on the education of U.S citizens, no education for slaves, only three years for women, and only focused on finding smart white men. His ideas were considered radical. His bill for the education was defeated every time and he created the University of Virginia. His biggest belief was that public education was essential to a democracy. Horace Mann 1830-1840s, in Massuchusetts state senate, first secretary of education, and visited over 1000 schools reporting on their conditions resulting in him wanting to change public schools. He said governments have to make the changes. Through lectures and conventions he created the common schools which included everyone and was supported through taxes. He standardized al...
After the second Battle of Manassas, the Army of the Potomac was demoralized and President Lincoln needed someone that could reorganize it. President Lincoln liked General McClellan personally and admired his strengths as an administrator, organizer, and drillmaster. Lincoln was aware that the soldiers loved General McClellan and had nicknamed him “Little Mac.” Knowing this, President Lincoln ordered General McClellan to “assume command of Washington, its defenses and all forces in the immediate vicinity.”1 This was not a field command but intended for General McClellan to take the returning demoralized Army and the new soldiers coming into Washington and make them a fighting force, nothing more. Lincoln knew as well that although Ge...
As the United States became divided through civil war in 1861, the Union was in need of a military leader who could carry their Army to victory over the resolute troops of the Confederacy. These demands were met with the unmatched leadership tactics of Commanding Union Army General, Ulysses S. Grant. Grant consistently displayed the values and image of a true military leader. These leadership qualities were displayed both on the battlefield, as Grant commanded Union troops to victory in the American Civil War, and while he served as the 18th President of the United States. Grant was a knowledgeable and skilled military leader, graduating from West Point in 1843 and continuing on to serve in the military until 1854. However, Grant’s military leadership is most clearly characterized through three distinct leadership traits other than his military competence: Firstly, Ulysses S. Grant was determined. Despite how diverse or intimidating the battle or political allegations during his Presidential scandals, Grant did not back down; secondly, Grant was inspirational, and was able to both inspire his men during battle and increase morale of the northern citizens through decisive Union victories; Lastly, Ulysses S. Grant was morally courageous both on and off the battlefield as he made ethical decisions in dealing with the terms of surrender and reconstruction of the South as well as openly supporting and focusing his efforts on emancipation. By possessing these leadership traits, Ulysses S. Grant served as one of the most influential and important military leaders in U.S. history.
The American Civil War is perhaps the most important event in U.S. history since the American Revolution. Over half a million men would perish between the Union and Confederate Armies. It is important to know that Ulysses S. Grant was an important figure (perhaps the most important behind Abraham Lincoln) in the war. Many will see him as the hero of the American Civil War. Nevertheless there were others who would play an important role to help the Union win the Civil War. The implementation of black soldiers was crucial to the Union in order to achieve victory against the Confederate Army. Yet, the contributions and accomplishments of black soldiers during the Civil War were overlooked for nearly a century following the Civil War. However, within the last 30 years, many scholars and historians have begun to publish books on the history of black soldiers and their contributions to the Civil War. During the Civil War, free blacks were permitted to serve in the Union Army. But it was not until 1863, that black soldiers would see combat and charge against the confederate armies. It is estimated that around 186,000 African American served the Union Army throughout the war, with the creation of 163 colored regiments. My research paper will focus on the Black regiments of the American Civil War and their importance to U.S. history. Some of the important issues that will be discussed in this paper will include the struggles of black soldiers during the Civil War, from their wage earnings (where most made less money than white soldiers); the clothes they wore (most had no uniforms at all). Also, many of these soldiers had trouble getting the basic necessities like shoes, socks and soap. Other areas I will discuss will be the discriminatio...
Robert Anderson is mostly remembered by his heroism at Fort Sumter and his patriotism to this great country. He was a soldier in many wars and a Union army officer in the Civil War. Throughout Anderson’s life he showed great leadership whether in battle or at home. He was a man who would do whatever necessary to keep his country united, either at war or in some another conflict. Throughout the Civil War he was persistent in battle, but also commanding and mild-tempered. He fought and commanded in many battles over his lifetime.
In the essay Grant and Lee: A Study in Contrast written by Bruce Catton, Catton compares and contrasts Civil War Generals, Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant. The essay describes the generals and states that from their backgrounds to their philosophy on life they are completely divided.
What personal qualities does Lincoln and Lee share? They both share the patriotic mindset and both share solidarity. “ as an American Citizen I take great pride in my country, her prosperity and institutions. This is from letter to his son by Robert Lee this show the love for this country. The differences that Lincoln and Lee had were they made their choices from different places. Lincoln made his choices from his head and Lee made choices from his heart. Me personally i will trust a man that makes choices with his heart over his head because I believe the heart is truer than the head.
