Theories on the Disappearance of the Colony of Roanoke The colony of Roanoke was a British colony that mysteriously disappeared sometime between 1587 and 1590. Almost all traces of the colony disappeared, no bodies or houses. There are many different theories to Roanoke’s disappearance some being cannibalism, lethal disease, getting lost while trying to go back to England, or to go to the mainland. The most believed theory is that they were attacked and killed by Native Americans. But this doesn’t explain why Croatoan was carved into a tree. They then could have all starved and died or either got killed by or married into Native American tribes. There is not a lot of proof to support this theory so it is unlikely. Another theory is that they tried to go back to England but were attacked by pirates, got lost at sea, or sank in a storm. This theory is not that viable because they were colonists who wanted to find a new land so why go back to England. One of the more interesting theories is that the daughter of John White, Eleanor Dare, made a bunch of stones that told what happened to the colonists. The Dare Stones all went underwater because of rising sea level. The first found was in the carolina coastal region by a Californian man. The Californian gave it to someone who knew a guy and it ended up with the Brenau University. Most of these theories are very far-fetched or don’t have enough solid evidence to prove anything. However it is an unsolved mystery that some people have wasted their lives on. At this point in time, the idea that they will find the lost colony is difficult to believe historians will ever know what actually happened to Roanoke. If they haven’t found anything yet then will they ever? And if it was really aliens, then will they ever find the missing colonists of the island of
