Roald Dahl
“A person is a fool to become a writer. His only compensation is absolute freedom,” Roald Dahl. That is one skill that he had as an author; saying things that made people think about what they were reading. Roald Dahl was an early children’s book writer and illustrator, but he also wrote some books that were for a more adult audience. Roald was much more than a writer, he was a man of many talents and a special career. Though many incidents happened in his life, he still continued as a writer. Roald’s adult life was a life that not everyone was able to live at the time. He went places many people did not go, and saw many things that people did not see. His experiences made him one of history’s greatest writers.

Roald has three sisters Else, Alfhild, and Astri. Roald went to Llandaff Cathedral School, but soon changed schools due to a beating he received for being a very playful and mischievous child. Soon his parents enrolled him in a British boarding school. Then he changed schools again and went to Repton, which is a private school that is known for excelling in academics. Roald attended Repton, but wasn’t going to change the way he acted. Though his behavior was not the best, he still excelled academically. He was one of the best students, but had the worst behavior. While at Repton, his mother offered to pay for him to go to college at Oxford or Cambridge University. He simply responded by saying, “No thank you. I want to go straight from school to work for a company that will send me to wonderful faraway …show more content…
Throughout his career Dahl wrote 54 books, and that is including children’s books, children’s poetry, and adult books. His books were somewhat based off his childhood, but they were all very entertaining. The most common books were Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and James and the Giant Peach. They were all stories were the protagonist overcame some challenge in their life, and Dahl made the connection for a very obvious reason. Since he has such a bad and troubled child he wrote about them in different scenarios. Other than that each story was a great literary work, and some went on to even become movies. From those movies that were made later went on to have remakes of the movies that were originally made.He also made a short television series called Tales of the Unexpected, that became well known all over the world. The television series were small stories that he made up in his head about small sinister moments that he thought about but never wrote about in a book. With all of this writing Dahl had to receive some awards, and believe that he did. Roald received four major awards. He received The World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement, Edgar Award for Best Television Episode, Edgar Award for Best Short Story, and Cable ACE Award for International Children’s Book. That obviously shows that he is a well decorated man, and he didn’t even go to college. Roald Dahl accomplished many

Throughout Dr. Seuss’s life, he has written dozens of books with over one hundred million copies sold, and still being produced to this day. Theodor Seuss Geisel is a well-known author that had many inspirations for his works that are still read by millions today, such as Yertle the Turtle, The Sneeches, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. His inevitable fame and fortune came with a lot of pressure; pressure of his readers as well as pressure of his producers.
Tolkien, a man who shaped so many lives, his story gave so many people meaning, passion and love. He alone created a world for us few who choose to escape to it. Tolkien's writing is as deep as the world he created, purely descriptive and imaginative creating a tale that will forever be remembered and loved by generations to come.
He was a smart kid but it didn't show in his school work, he was more of a fighter , if he was being teased he would settle it with his fist and not his mind. It wasn't until he found his voice in writing for him to actually take school seriously. At a very young age his mother read to him and he started to vision other worlds beyond his surroundings. High school is where he figured out he wanted to be an author. At age 17 he joined the army but he would also keep his writing dream alive. At night he wrote short stories and columns for men’s magazines. After the army he was barely surviving , and he didn't know what to do next. He says James Baldwin inspired him to write after reading one of his short stories telling about his life and being African American. He therefore decided to write about his own struggles when growing up and being a troubled boy. He tells about how he came out of the dismayed lifestyle and made it through. He once said , “I write books for the troubled boy I once was, and for the boy who lives within me still. It’s what I do.” This quote says a lot about his character and what he wants for other young men. He not only writes books but he writes them for a
Not all children may know his real name, but they do know what they like. And what they like is the author Theodor Geisel, or better known as the beloved Dr. Seuss. During the years of my early childhood I fondly remember my parents reading me the whimsical words of Dr. Seuss. His books were filled with imagination and humor which made them very enjoyable for me to listen to. As I got older I started to read Dr. Seuss books all by myself. All of his books are constructed with simple words that make it easy for children to learn how to read. With the pages full of colourful pictures and very little text his books were never overwhelming for a young reader. The simplicity of his books always encouraged me on my path to learning how to read because I never felt like I had to give up. The themes that can be found within his books may be viewed as nonsensical to some, but to most children they are very amusing. The text that Dr. Seuss uses in all of his books consists of words that are important for all children to have in their early and developing vocabulary. I decided to pick Dr. Seuss for my ISP in this course because I find his writing to be educational and very entertaining at the same.
When you read his works, you think to yourself “He must have been in a really dark place in his life in to have written this”, well he was. Instead of turning all of these horrific moments into negatives, he turned them into positives with poems and short stories. With his use of advanced vocabulary and detail you have to be somewhat mature and dig deep to uncover the true meanings and understand it completely. It challenges you to push yourself into more in depth things. As you read the poems s...

Sometimes it's difficult to find the connections between the patterns in an artist's life and his work. But with Roald Dahl, the connections are quite clear. It is known that there were many tragedies in Roald Dahl's life and he had to overcome these somehow, whether he gave up and moved on, or fought against them and found victory. All of Dahl's works reflect at least one aspect of his personal life, whether it be his childhood, his marriage, his children, his experiences, or himself. It is quite apparent that after all the hardships he survived, he managed to turn such experiences into creative stories for children. He wrote about small aspects of his life and magnified them, and made them amusing for children, and even adults. One theme that is apparent in almost all of Dahl's works the use of violence and cruelty by authority figures on the weak, and once again, he seems to turn this around to be more of a positive, amusing aspect, rather than a negative, traumatizing one.
Seuss has made several contributions to literature. In numerous, if not all of his writings, Seuss uses funky rhymes, outlandish characters, and ties his story together with a heartfelt theme. (4) In relation to his works, Seuss himself said it best, “Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple”(5); and I believe that this can relate to his works. The majority of Seuss’s books were children’s books, which contained an underlying message. By using his imagination and the way he arranged his words, he was able use the simplest words to create the biggest impact. Although he was immensely involved in his books, Dr. Seuss had a personal life as well. Behind the scenes, was a woman named Audrey Stone [Geisel], who greatly impacted and influenced his books later on in his life. (6) Because Seuss was successful, he received several awards. Some of these include: Lifetime of Contribution to Children’s Literature, An Academy award for “Gerald McBoing-Boing” (Best Cartoon, 1951). An Emmy for “Halloween is Grinch Night”. (7) It is obvious that Dr. Seuss’s writings have been and will continue to be loved and
He lived an adventurous life before becoming a writer, and much of that influenced his writing. Dahl knew how to appeal to both adults and children via his writing. He understood the unique humor children have, and he was able to manipulate his writing into famous works. Dahl is most known for his children books like James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which also became movies. Because of his unique style of writing, Dahl was given both positive and negative criticism.
Roald Dahl was a writer of some of the best novels known. Not only was he a writer but he had many other careers such as being a poet, a fighter pilot, and more. Dahl has experienced a lot throughout his life, from school to being in the war. He mainly wrote stories that were intended for children and he was referred to “one of the greatest story tellers for children of the 20th century.” Many of his stories were about real life happenings but he exaggerated them to a great extent in order to make serious situations humorous. This exaggeration added a lot of humour to his stories and this was the main reason why he was such a popular story teller.
Do you ever meet someone, and assume that they are something based on what they do, and then later realize that that’s that who they are? Lots of people make that mistake in life. It also happens in stories by Roald Dahl. In The Landlady by Roald Dahl and The Umbrella Man by Roald Dahl, think the main character is one thing, but is is not due to false leads and characterization that the author gives away. After all, people are not always who they seem to be.
Roald Dahl used to tell bedtime stories to his children and these became the books he is now famous for. In 1961, he published James and the Giant Peach.
