Fear, instilled into our brains through violence and driven by a leader with a purpose. The rise of Islam is driven by fear, whether it be the fear of damnation through the divine or by the violence others bestow upon us. Gordon says, “History has shown repeatedly that ideas can provide powerful motivation for extraordinary deeds.” (11) Muslims are masters of using this fear/violence to make their religion dominant; Muhammad’s use of violence to spread the Muslim religion, how Muslim diplomacy leads to violence, and how it shaped our modern day views on the Muslim religion for the worse. In this paper, I want to show why the use of fear along with Muslim violence made Islam grow and expand at such a rapid rate. Through fear and violence it shaped the strict Muslim codes to live by and enforced its respect compared to other Religions such as Christianity. Muhammad’s use of violence to spread the Muslim religion along with my second point of a false sense of diplomacy, in turn helped my third point with the shaping of modern day tenth century views on an Islamic culture that is still striving in the Arabia Peninsula. The fear that Islamic society placed into citizens is a main reason if not the reason Islam rose so quickly and became a force to be reckoned with from the birth of Muhammad in 570 CE all the way to the tenth century rulers with Abbasid Caliphate. Battles were lost but beliefs have a way with people to take drastic measures and commit violence for a cause within the person’s spirit. Looking at Muslim history you must look at not the spiritual morality but at the justice and fairness for other people in their own beliefs and in that sense they were the leaders in creating forceful violence and striking fear for a religious
