Interview Rihanna
I’ve had the opportunity to interview the famous singer Robyn Rihanna Fenty. The interview took place in July 2015. Rihanna is a singer born on February 20th 1988 on the Caribbean island Barbados. In this interview we made a quick flashback in her career and asked questions about certain events that have taken place on the road to Rihanna's current state in her career. We began at the beginning of her career when she left her home at the age 16, when asked how it felt to leave her home at such early age, she answered; “I was not afraid at all, I knew what I wanted and I only left because things were working out and in the direction I wanted. So it actually felt good, I sure did miss my family but I had a chance to pursue

This was the year that Rihanna experienced a trauma that changed a lot in her personal life and career. A picture got leaked of Rihanna's face beaten and bruised, she had been assaulted by her boyfriend after they had gotten into a heated argument. It is obviously not easy going through something like this and the fact that Rihanna went through it with the world watching throughout the media didn’t make it easier. We asked her about how she felt about the trauma versus how she feels now, to which she answered; “Back then, everything I knew switched. And it was hard to interpret the situation, even harder on camera. I felt protective because the only person they hated were him. As angry and betrayed as I was, I kept thinking of how he made this mistake because he needed help and who’s gonna help him? I was more concerned about him because nobody was gonna say that he needed help, everybody would say that he’s a monster. It took me a long time and I did hold a grudge, but I have forgiven him. I was angry and it was coming out in my music, clothes and attitude. I didn’t like that feeling because it felt so
In 2013, the self-titled visual album BEYONCÉ sold almost eight hundred thirty thousand digitally in the first three days, while her sixth number one and second visual album, Lemonade, only sold four hundred ninety thousand digitally in the first week. Although Beyoncé’s second visual album wasn’t numerically successful, both show a vulnerable, an artistic, and a controversial side of Beyoncé. Both albums have surprising visuals and stunning lyrical content with either an obvious meaning or a meaning we have yet to figure out, such as the famous line, “You better call Becky with the good hair.” (Beyoncé, “Sorry”). BEYONCÉ and Lemonade show that Beyoncé tries to better herself as an artist and make herself more vulnerable.

On December 13, 2013 Beyoncé - who was named by the Time magazine as the most influential person of the year 2014 - unexpectedly released a self-titled visual album that went viral on the Internet, that is, it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and sold 828,773 electronic copies in three days becoming the fastest-selling album in iTunes Store history. After the release of the album the artist posted coupe of videos where she was walking her fans through her songs and music videos in the album explaining what was intention and the idea behind each song. In one of those videos she speaks about how she was looking for some videos on feminism on YouTube, and when she saw a TEDx video from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie talking about feminism, Beyoncé decided to use it for her new single – Flawless - as in her opinion the music and the Adichie’s video suited very well with each other. By the end of the explanatory video she talks about ‘imperfection’ and embracing one’s imperfections, which she links to her another single Pretty Hurts. This song features the issues of sexual objectification of female bodies and the culture of perfection where women are valued only for their beauty. In another explanatory video she talks about owning her sexuality and body, especially after her pregnancy. As she explains it was her joy and her confidence that allowed her to show her body to the public. In the video she mentions that she is very well aware of the fact that she is showing her body, and that she is doing this partly for other women as well to empower them, and give them an example that you can own your body and your sexuality, even after body goes into a lot of transformations during pregnancy.
Whitney Houston to most was a very amazing and talented person who allowed life and its mishaps break her down. As a young girl she grew up in the church where she felt like it was a sign from God that she should be singing. Freud believes that religion is an illusion, an attempt to gain control over the external world. In his eyes saying that anything is a sign from God depends on how you vision life. There were times in her life where she would produce more music just to get thru the thing that she would be going through. She would use her music as a defense mechanism to get away from all of the abuse, problems with her marriage, neglect, and drugs. Defense mechanisms are ways to distort reality to reduce anxiety: Rationalization is giving a positive reason to a stressor and regression is withdrawing from reality and going to pastime.
On the night of December 13, 2013 Beyoncé, released her fifth self-titled album on iTunes. The album caught many people by surprise because Beyoncé did not set a date for the album, nor did she use any promotion; she did release a video on her Instagram asking her followers if they “were ready”. The buzz spread through social media like wildfire. With no promotion or warning, Beyoncé album took the world by storm and made it for her audience and critics to take in the album and its contents. Many people loved the album for not only its catchy songs, but also the growth and “looser” conservative Beyoncé.
Whitney Houston is considered as one of the greatest singers of our generation. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, she holds the record of being the most rewarded female artist of all time. I chose her as my topic, because she represents resiliency and tenacity, despite her troubled experiences with drugs and her personal life. Whitney Houston comes from a family with an amazing, musical pedigree; her mother, Cissy Houston, was a successful back-up singer for Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley. Dionne Warwick is her first cousin and Aretha Franklin is her godmother. In 1983, Houston was signed to Arista Records and music executive, Clive Davis, became her mentor and helped launch her successful career. Whitney Houston was known as the innocent, girl-next-door, who promoted positivity and love within her professional career. Houston's good-girl image was shattered, when she married R&B bad boy, Bobby Brown in 1992. Towards the late 90's, it was rumored that she was using drugs and she looked very thin. In 2006, Houston divorced Bobby Brown and entered into rehab, to end her addiction to cocaine and other drugs. The world was happy to see her healthy and singing again; everyone thought she had made a full recovery and was ready for her to appear back into the spotlight. Tragically, on February 11, 2012, Whitney Houston was found dead in her Beverly Hills hotel, she was 48 years old. Her mother, Cissy Houston, has written a book about her daughter's life, entitled: Remembering Whitney, which depicts the rise and fall of the tragic singer's life.
The #BlackGirlMagic is just an appreciation of us in general. We have read numerous articles that show appreciation to our African American girls for doing and succeeding at whatever they do, for example the Giorgis "Carefree Black Girl" article. This article depicts how even though Rihanna is oppressed by society's thoughts and expectations of her, she still manages to express herself without caring about all the backfire she may receive while doing so. Rihanna’s actions, the way she dresses, is all against what society deems as lady-like. She demands authority over her body, narrative, and career.

Rihanna in her childhood was inspired by Bob Marley, Madonna, Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey. This reflected most in her very first single “Pon de Replay”, which was a reggae inspired dance track, immediately hitting the top 2 on billboard singles chart.
