Family violence can be defined as one family member making violent, emotionally harmful or assaultive behaviors towards a "spouse, child or any other family member" (Besharov, 1990). Family violence can be physical, sexual, psychological, social or economic. It is a hidden problem. People are usually reluctant to talk about what they suffer, or it just happens when the doors are closed. Women and children are usually the victims of violence, because they are the weaker ones.
First of all, domestic violence is a term that includes many types of violence and abuse such as physical, verbal, economic, sexual, social or spiritual abuse. The first type is physical and verbal/emotional abuse, this is the most popular one when people think about violence . It is happened when someone threatens to injure or harm other people, maybe their partner or their children.

Domestic violence can have specific victims such as a spouse or domestic partner, a child, or an elder. Domestic violence can affect men as well as women. Some types of domestic violence are physical, verbal or nonverbal, sexual, stalking or cyberstalking, economic or financial, and spiritual.
The abuser may use many different types of abuse to assert this power, and the overall in which the abuse occurs may follow a pattern. Violent events may occur in a variety of patterns the victim may experience ongoing, nonstop abuse, or the abuse may stop and start. The abuse often seen in a violent relationship begins with a tension, followed by the actual abusive act, and then calm. On the other hand, the victim may also attempt to bring on the violence to get it over with. The abuser may deny the violence or blame the other person for his or her actions. The abuser may promise that the abuse will never happen again. That’s how typically the abuser gets over with the situation. According with the Department of Justice “approximately 95% of the victims of domestic violence are women. Women are most likely to be killed when attempting to leave the abuser. In fact, they are at a 75% higher risk than those who stay. 50% of the homeless women and children in the United States are fleeing abuse.” (
Domestic violence covers a large array of abuses. Some of the different types of abuse include Physical, Emotional, Verbal, Sexual and Economical. Women suffering abuse usually suffer from all the different types. Often one type of abuse will bleed or lead to another and most abuse cases never start out with something physical. Although domestic violence can include the abuse of parents, children, siblings and other relatives, it predominantly involves violence against sexual partners with women being the most common victims and men being the 'aggressors' (Family Violence Professional Education Taskforce 1991). According to McCue (1995), many families experience conflict, but not all male members of families inevitably resort to violence. It is not the fact of family disputes or marital conflict that generate or characterize violence in the home. Violence occurs when one person assumes the right to dominate over the other and decides to use violence or abuse as a means of ensuring that domination (Family Violence Professional Education Taskforce 1991).
