A peace of mind is one of the best things a person can have. The fact that you’ll never have to worry about you getting hurt is a great thing. Rights to the Streets of Memphis, Addams family values, and Almost fell of a cliff proves it's better to be protected because you’ll never get hurt. Protection is one thing that can help anyone. For example in the story Right to the Streets of Memphis by Richard Wright about a boy named Richard whose dad left the family. His mom gets a job and Richard gets new responsibilities. One of those responsibilities are to go shopping, and when he does he gets beat up by bullies. Then his mom gives him a weapon to protect himself against the bullies. This time with the weapon Richard’s mom gave him he beat
Karr 's famous epigram plus ça change, plus c 'est la même chose stuck with me throughout reading Stephen Ash 's A Massacre in Memphis: The Race Riot That Shook the Nation One Year After the Civil War. In 1866, during the uneasy aftermath of the Civil War, Memphis was swept by an orgy of racial violence. How did it start? Armed white policemen sparked a confrontation with a group of young black men – many of whom were Union veterans. Sound familiar? By the time the situation was brought under control, the grim tally was: 46 African-Americans and three whites killed, 75 blacks injured, five black women raped, 100 blacks robbed, 96 homes destroyed, as well as four black churches and twelve black schools burned to the ground. Of the African-American
As for myself growing up in a family of three boys and being the middle child, my father taught me to defend myself yet I now know that I should have learned much more. When I was a toddler and even when I was in high school my father would tell me to defend myself. I wasn’t afraid of anything because I had no idea what was really going on. The only thing I was taught was to act immediately, right when someone attempted to harm me and when it came down to it, I knew my older brother Julian was there to

This document acknowledges the different set of rules about what the master expect from his slaves to do and not to do. The plantation rules described in this document is accounted from the diary of Bennet Barrow’s, the owner of 200 slaves on his plantation in Louisiana on May 1, 1838. No one will be allowed to leave the plantation without Barrow’s permission is the first of many plantation rules. To add, no one is allowed to marry out of the plantation and allowed to sell anything without their master’s consent. Rules implemented by Barrow is strictly dedicated to the safety and security of his plantation of from encroachment of outsiders. He is more concerned about his
In his article, “The Nightmare of the West Memphis Three”, Rich explores how the people of Memphis drew horrific conclusions about people based on the lifestyle they chose to practice. The article highlights the trials and tribulations faced by the accused three young teenagers. Rich does this by citing the popular documentary series “Paradise Lost” which is an in depth analysis into the lives of the accused, the victims’ families and members of the community. This paper outlines how the belief system of that time superseded the inconclusive evidence, which ultimately led to an unfair trial. By “othering” and “marginalizing” those three teens, the society and police created a scenario that aligned with their belief system at the time. Lastly, this paper highlights the influence of the media and celebrity in changing the course for these boys.

In the article “Peaceful Woman Explains Why She Carries a Gun” Linda M. Hasselstrom, explains a series of events that prompt her to an important decision. It was a decision that changed her life. Hasselstrom is a respected writer who has written several books on based on personal, life experiences. In this particular article she gives examples of events that have occurred to her that forced her take a decision of carrying a gun. She explains that throughout her 10 recent years there were varies occasions where she saw herself in a dangerous situation. During those 10 years she constantly experienced situations where she saw she needed protection, and a simple self defense class wasn’t going to help. She became aware of her surroundings and eventually had experience on what to do in those types of dangerous situations. Although carrying a gun for her was something she needed when it came to protection, she also had to learn that it was a huge responsibility.

Luckily, she had a conceal to carry and when she pulled her gun out, they fled.” (McCoy) If the woman had not had a gun in her possession, then the outcome could have been much worse. Luckily though, she held a concealed carry and she had a gun with her, which therefore made a life changing difference. Another case where having a concealed carry saved a life was one where an attacker broke into a woman’s home. The woman, who was getting out of the shower at the time, was met by the attacker who was holding a kitchen knife in his hands. The woman put up a fight, and fell back into the tub when she lost the struggle. She knew she had to do something, so she convinced the man that she had money in her bedroom. When going to retrieve the “money”, she grabbed a .22 caliber handgun and shot her attacker nine times. Police say the man ran out the door and collapsed, dying in her backyard. (Hawkins) Monica Jones, mother of three kids, heard the neighbor child screaming one Thursday. When she went to go see what the commotion was all about, she discovered a man who had ripped the child’s clothes off and had tried to rape her. Jones pointed a shotgun at the man and told him to stay or she would shoot him. (Hawkins) It is times like the ones above that make having a gun around a priceless opportunity. There are bad guys everywhere. Guns are like fire extinguishers.
One of our stimulus materials was music. Our teacher played 2 songs to the class, one of them was “Gangster Nation – Ice Cube” and the other one was “The Rumble – West Side Story”, both very different, but both about Law & Order. “Gangster Nation” is a more modern song and that is why it had a lot of drums and effects in the song, on the other hand “The Rumble” is a song in a musical and musicals rarely use drums, they mostly rely on the piano and maybe strings. The first song was very stereotypical all of the people wore baggy clothes and it had a number of gangs, but all of the gangs had a leader, however in “The Rumble” it was made unclear who was the leader in the gang, because all of the actors / characters were moving in unison and they
The Memphis Race Riot of 1866 was one of the most horrific and terrifying events that Memphis, Tennessee has ever seen in the city’s history. You may be wondering what could have caused something so tragic and terrible to happen to such a small town, but there is only one answer; hatred. Hatred is one of the many things that fueled the fire to start the biggest race riot to ever take place in Memphis, Tennessee. Hatred is the one thing that all of those people had to feel to be so cruel to another human being without a care in the world. But that hatred had to start from somewhere and that somewhere was on a street on May 1, 1866.
Everywhere we go it seems like we are at danger of someone or something making us feel uncomfortable. In the essay “A Peaceful Woman Explains Why She Carries a Gun” by Linda Hasselstrom, she explains that many females have to be cautious when they drive on the street, walk to their car, and many times even when they are entering their own house. This is illogical because this means we are no longer safe anywhere we go, including places we expect to be safe. Weapons could be of great use in protecting ourselves but could essentially be really harmful. Being able to carry a gun could be essential for everyone because it allows us the right to feel like we are protected and most importantly, safe. Guns are truly useful for female protection, which
That is why you need some better protection. Something that scare the attacker and alarm the people or the police patrolling nearby. Now some may say that a personal alarm is useless because it can't actually stop the threat. It is true that a personal alarm actually can't stop the attacker, but my point is three-fold. First, it is the perfect complement to any choice of weapon with offensive power (stun gun, pepper spray or any such thing). Second, it will alarm people around you and third, it will stop actual confrontation for most of the time.
“Domestic violence is a violent confrontation between family or household members involving physical harm, sexual assault, or fear of physical harm” (Stewart & Croudep, 1998-2012). In most places domestic violence is looked on as one of the higher priorities when trying to stop crime. Domestic Violence cases are thought to be influenced by the use of alcohol, drugs, stress or anger but in reality, they are just learned behaviors by the batterer. These habits can be stopped as long as one seeks help (Stewart & Croudep, 1998-2012). For instance, a child is brought up in a household that is constantly involved in criminal acts. As this child grows up, the criminal lifestyle will be synonymous with his/her behavior. With that being said, it is also a given fact that if a household and its members are surrounded with violence, the relationships between one another will be strained. Eventually this will end up in a divorce or even worse, death, depending on how far the violence goes. If there is violence in a family, then the ones who are affected by it may feel like they deserve it because of what the batterer is accusing them of doing. Battering occurs among people of all races, ages, socio-economic classes, religious affiliations, occupations, and educational backgrounds (Stewart & Croudep, 1998-2012). Domestic violence can affect families in more aspects than one; the husband-wife relationship, the children, and also the financial stability.
Picture this: You are a weary, stressed, and miserable single mother, raising two delightfully bright children who are in need of better education. You need to work hard to earn a living – but these days, how many people don’t work hard? Due to trying to earn a living, you don’t have time to take self-defence classes, you don’t have energy to learn self-defence, and you
