There were a total of six victims whom fell at hands of Richard Trenton Chase, a.k.a "The Vampire of Sacramento". Strangely enough, that murder count does not appear as heinous or unusual when comparing to the killing sprees of other high profile serial killers. However, if we take a look deeper into the man that was known as "The Vampire of Sacramento" and more importantly how he carried out his murders; we will realize that he is one of the most gruesome serial killers in history. Furthermore, Richard Trenton Chase suffered from mental illnesses through his life and in turn, this led to that killing spree that left six dead. Richard Trenton Chase's unusual behavior wasn't something that just happened suddenly; this odd behavior began to develop at very young age and escalated. As Richard Chase grew older his mental illness's such as paranoid schizophrenia, hypochondria, sociopathy, and psychosis all grew more severe as did his drug use (academia.org). Ultimately, the combination of his mental illness and his drug use is what evidently created the monster that we have come know as "The Vampire of Sacramento". Although Richard Chase was not the most sophisticated serial killer, his murders were very brutal and disturbing because of mutilation, raping, and blood consumption that occurred. Not to mention, this man has a simple Modus Operandi which was if door opened than that's the next victim who we would murder with .22 caliber semiautomatic pistol.
