Psychological Profile Ramirez had many characteristics that could be similar to a typical serial killer. There are a great number of traits that can make a serial killer who they are. There are also upbringings that can make a serial killer act a certain way. Experiences and certain events can cause them to become the serial killer they are. Serial killers can also become who they are not just because of their surroundings, but because they want to. Sometimes they want revenge on somebody and then it just continues on because it becomes a habit. Characteristics of a serial killer include: alcohol and substance abuse, psychological abuse during childhood, sexually stressful events in childhood, bed-wetting, growing up lonely and isolated, fantasies, preferring auto-erotic activities, developing voyeurism and fetishism in adulthood, acting out fantasies on animals, and physical injuries (Gerber 2). There are quite obviously more traits that are typical of a regular serial killers, but these ten appear to be the most common amongst them. There were multiple experiences within Ramirez’s childhood that crafted him into the serial killer he once was. His father was abusive to him and his siblings. When Ramirez was two, he had two severe head injuries. These head injuries were …show more content…
The crimes more than likely began because of his troubled childhood and the people around him. Ramirez was greatly influenced by all the things happening around him. Mike definitely had the greatest impact because of all the graphic and realistics things he showed and talked about. He even killed his own wife right in front of Ramirez, all because of an argument. Mike definitely had anger issues which could’ve influenced Ramirez and made him act out like Mike did. These events show that Richard was affected more by the people surrounding him which makes him fit better into the nurture
Knowing the destiny of Montoya Santana, the character played by Edward James Olmos, in growing up and into a revered and lifelong membership in the Mexican Mafia, including 18 years in Folsom Prison, the development of a comprehensive, although hypothetical, human service intervention plan is in order. This hypothetical, culturally appropriate, therapeutic intervention is to take place at the point young (16-year-old) Santana is first institutionalized in (juvie) the juvenile d...

Forensically speaking there is no evidence that proves that Ramirez had any mental disorders. Although he does have the characteristics of someone who is a sociopath, such as compartmentation . However, what intrigued me about Ramirez wasn’t just the murder himself, but what motivated him to commit his murders and the theory of nature versus nurture. Richard did not have a strong foundation as a child because he was being raised by an abusive, alcoholic father and a mother who appeared to not protect Richard from the father, this is the perfect foundation in creating a serial killer. The pivotal moment when Ramirez became a serial killer was when he watched mike murder his wife because he associated murder with sex. Who knows what would have happened to Richard if Mike was not in his life. He could have still had psychological issues but he could have turned out not to be a
Ramirez was born in 1960 to his Mexican immigrant parents Julian and Mercedes Ramirez. He was the youngest out of his five siblings of 3 boys and 2 girls. He grew up in El Paso, Texas, where he had a relatively normal childhood to start off with. Even though Ramirez seemed to be on a down hill spiral, his father always maintained that Ramirez was a "good boy". At the age of 12 he started to spend a lot of time with his cousin Mike, a Vietnam veteran, his cousin would show him pictures of women he had raped and tortured during his time in Vietnam. Mike would sometime take Ramirez out to the desert at night to show him how to sneak up on animals and kill them. Ramirez was taught how to use a knife and where the vital spots were on the animals. Some believe that the turning point in Ramirez's life may have been when he witnessed his cousin murder his wife. At the time Ramirez was 13 and was smoking pot with his cousin Mike when his wife came in and allegedly started to "nag" him on getting his life together and getting a job. Mike then took out a gun and shot her in the face. The blood of Mikes wife spattered onto Ramirez. After Mikes conviction Ramirez became fascinated with the photos that Mike had showed him. From being a bright young stude...
In order to identify serial killers before they kill repeatedly, a person needs to study the characteristics that make up this type of criminal. Most serial killers have been abandoned, by one or both parents, they are emotionally, physically, and even sexually abused by a family member, or relatives from unstable families who have criminal, psychiatric and alcoholic histories, or tend to have hate for their parents and people in general which makes them have antisocial personality disorder. They have conflicted, pained, or tortured animals at a young age and most are highly interested in gaining control over things. Even though not every serial killer posses these characteristics, most share these characteristics the same way they share the psychological need to have complete control and power over people. Dennis Rader was one normal average citizen until he shocked the public when he was caught as a serial killer who caused tragedy in their town.
The case of whether serial killers are born with the lust to kill or if they are truly victims of their environment has been a hot debated question by both psychologists and the FBI today. A serial killer is traditionally defined as one that kills 3 or more people at different times with “cooling off” periods in between kills. Both psychological abuse as a child and psychological disorders are to blame for the making of a killer. The nature vs. nurture debate is best applied to the mysterious behaviors and cases of serial killers and their upbringing and environment. Nature is the genetic and biological connections a person has, personality traits, and how genetic make-up all relates to a killer. Nurture is examining the upbringing and environment that a person is around that affects what a person becomes. In some cases however, the effects of only upbringing or only biological problems were the reasons certain serial killers committed crimes. Although there is no definitive answer to what plays the bigger role: nature or nurture, they both are contributing factors that make a serial killer. These deviants of society are afflicted with problems in either their upbringing or have psychological disorders, and are able to blend into our everyday lives with no apparent differences, yet they wreck havoc through their unremorseful killings.

Richard Ramirez was born on February 29, 1960 in El Paso, Texas; his father’s name was Julian. His father Julian was a railway worker, and formerly a policeman in Juarez, Mexico (Richard Ramirez). His mother’s name is Mercedes, she worked in a boot making factory while pregnant with Richard. At the boot factory they used chemicals that are now know to cause problems with pregnancies. She was mixing the chemicals benzene, xylene, and toluene (Prolific Killers). When he was 2 he received 30 stitches after a dresser had fell on him. Then again when he was 5 he was knocked unconscious by a swing set. From these two incidents Ramirez developed epilepsy suffering grand mal seizures (Prolific Killers). These are the types of seizures that you picture when you hear the word seizure. They have violent muscle spasms and loss of consciousness. When he was a kid his cousin Mike came back from Vietnam. His cousin Mike was a special forces Green Beret. When Richard and Mike started to hang out Mike would show him what he did in Vietnam. Mike bragged about all the men and women he killed, and he would show Richard pictures to prove so (prolific Killers). He had pictures of decapitated heads of women. He also showed Richard pictures of h...
Alcohol abuse, psychological abuse, and poverty are some factors that lead Luis Garavito Cubillos to be the world’s worst rapist and serial killer. Cubillos, also known as “the beast” needed to feel god like. He had the worst fantasies but the fantasies were better than real life. He would recreate the murders and soon about 172 young boys became victims of him.
As years go on so will the research on serial killers and hopefully we as a society will fully understand them and one day be able to cure whatever inside that makes them have the urge to kill. Serial killers have captivated the attention of scientists from the first signs of their existence to modern day. Interested by these killers’ inhumane actions, researchers set out to determine the cause of such graphic, horrific crimes. The brain has been brought into question regarding the motivation of these cold blooded killers. After extensive research, abnormalities of both the chemical composition and material makeup have been identified within the brains of numerous serial killers. These differences are more than mere coincidence, they are evidence that killers do not think in the same way. The killers’ drives and motives are irregular, just as their brains are. Not only are these variations interesting, but they are also crucial to the justice system in regards to the punishment of past, future, and present sequential murderers. It is important that as a society we learn the differences in the mind of a killer, and also recognize and understand them. A serial killer’s brain greatly differs in function from the average citizen’s brain due to physical variations in the brain and a different chemical makeup.
Serial killers have many frightening facets. The most frightening thing about them is that experts still do not know what makes a human become a serial killer. Many experts believe serial killers become what they are because they have a genetic disposition or brain abnormality while other experts believe that a serial killer is created by childhood abuse; and some other experts believe that it is a combination of both brain abnormalities and abusive childhood experiences that creates a serial killer. A murderer is considered a serial killer when they “murder three or more persons in at least three separate events with a “cooling off period” between kills” (Mitchell and Aamodt 40). When defining a serial killer, their background, genes, and brain are not mentioned; perhaps one day those aspects of the serial killer can be included.
Ricardo Munoz Ramirez was born in El Paso, Texas on February 29, 1960. He was unfortunately given a very low class home with three brothers, one sister and a mom and dad. Most people called him Richard while he was young and, that name stuck around with him through his life. His father, Julian, was a very busy and stressed man. Julian had so much built-up anger because of this stress which made him abusive, especially towards Ramirez. His mother, Mercedes appeared to be much different than his father. She was a stay at home mom who cared very much for her children. He pursued the life of a criminal because of his family around him, including his father and especially his cousin, Mike. Mike impacted Ramirez in a way nobody else had. Ramirez committed his first murder on June 28, 1984. He was only 24 at the time. He went on to commit thirteen murders total and many more crimes within the span of two years. He was eventually apprehended on August 30, 1985 and was sentenced to jail for life along with 19 death sentences. While in jail, he suffered from liver failure and died in a hospital bed (Blanco 3).
A serial killer is defined in Webster's Dictionary as someone who murders more than three victims one at a time in a relatively short period of time. There is no one generic profile to identify a serial killer. They usually are people seeking for a sensation, a lack of guilt or remorse, a need for control, impulsivity, and predatory behavior. These traits make up a psychopathic personality disorder. Psychopathy is a disorder manifested in people who use a mixture of charm, manipulation, manipulation, and occasional violence to control others, in order to satisfy their own wants and needs. There are four main types of serial killers; thrill seekers, mission-oriented, visionary serial killers, and power and control killers. There may be other
So what makes a serial killer? Levin points out that contrary to popular belief, serial killers don't just 'snap'; or 'go crazy'; (Douglas, p. 137). Many of the serial killers have been the victims of childhood abuse. Jack Levin stated 'Research shows many serial killers suffered abuse, incest or neglect as children and develop poor self images'; (Douglas, p. 137). Serial killers often have a childhood marked by the absence of any nurturing relationship. 'They often come from families where the parents were absent or ineffective, where authority was not defined, and where they could engage in destructive behavior undeterred-violent play, cruelty to animals, and incidents of arson being some of the childhood behavior patterns noted among many serial killers'; (Clark, p. 206).
