Richard M. Nixon

Nixon was a brilliant student and though he had hardships growing up, he was very dedicated in what he did and had a bright future. At the age of 17, Nixon first attended Whittier College in September 1930. He especially enjoyed his student government classes and was even elected student class president, which led to his interest to get involved with politics. After graduating school, Nixon enrolled into the navy. He served in a naval air transport and was promoted to lieutenant commander before the war ended (World Book, Inc. Page 434).
After his service in the navy, Nixon ran for a position in congress. He campaigned and told the people that Voorhis, his competitor, was a communist; he won the election without a doubt. Now as a U.S representative, he took charge of the Marshal Plan and other foreign aid programs (Page 434). Nixon was doing very well with his cases and was on the high point of his career, he then ran for U.S senator in 1950 and won by more than 700,000 votes (Page 435). During these elections, he accused his competitors for associating with communists; even though there were no true verifications on those accusations. The people saw him as strong, republican with good intentions for our country.
Having the people’s attention was good thing, but he didn’t always have it. For a while when he was running for vice president with General Dwight D. Eisenhower, their democratic opponents accused them of spending their campaign funds on personal interest (Page 435). The people thought Nixon might ruin Eisenhower’s chance of winning the election and wanted him to withdraw from the campaign. Also while president; Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin were the first astronauts to set foot on the moon, while in space Nixon told them “Because of what you have done, the heavens have become part of man’s world” (NASA Administrator, NASA official Brian Dunbar).
