“Hunting is not a sport, in a sport both sides should know they’re in the game”(Paul Rodriguez)."The Most Dangerous Game," an adventure tale that pits two notorious hunters against one another in a life and death competition, is the story for which Richard Connell is best remembered. First published in 1924, the story has been frequently drawn together as a classic example of a suspenseful narrative loaded with action. Connell's story raises questions about the nature of violence, cruelty and the ethics of hunting for sport. "The Most Dangerous Game" gained favorable recognition upon its initial publication in 1924, winning the Prestigious O. Henry Memorial Award for short fiction. Its popularity was further established when the first film version of the story was produced in 1932. The story's theme, the hunter becoming the hunted, has become a popular one in other books and films since Connell's version appeared.
The characters in this story, while interesting, are certainly not realistic. Yet, the author creates a likeable character in Sanger Rainsford and a despicable one in General Zaroff. Rainsford is the protagonist of this story. He is portrayed as a round character as he displays multiple traits. Interestingly, one of the ways he shows multiple traits is in his attitude toward whatever he is hunting. In the beginning of the story, Rainsford explains to a sailor, "Who cares how a jaguar feels?" (Connell) At this point he has no sympathy for the animal. It is simply an object to be hunted. However, that attitude changes when he, himself, becomes General Zaroff's prey. Once that happens, Rainsford all of a sudden cannot believe Zaroff's attitude toward what is being hunted, in this case, a man. Rainsford exclaims, "H...

...le to understand what Zaroff was thinking about Rainsford and studying Rainsfords ever expression and move. Another time in the story when third person was noticed, was when Rainsford was being chased by Zaroff, and Rainsford was resting in a tall tree. Since this story was told in third person you knew what was going through his head when he heard and seen General Zaroff walking through the bushes, you also know what the General was thinking when he looked at Rainsford in the tree, but you also knew that Rainsford could not understand why the General walked away after he seen him in the tree. This story is better when you know both sides of the story, and it is way easier to understand.

The most dangerous game began as a sport for one man. His name is Sanger Rainsford. In Richard Connell’s story “The Most Dangerous Game,” Sanger Rainsford, an avid hunter, is lost at sea, stranded on “Ship-Trap” Island-every sailor’s worst nightmare. Rainsford goes through a series of events that prove to be life-altering. Even though Sanger Rainsford went through many trials and tribulations, he never lost his intelligence, composure, or his bravery.
Where does the line of sport and murder intersect in hunting? Is it when the species being hunted is able to reason? Or is it when the species being hunted looks just like the hunter? In both movie and film, we see a man fight for his life and another going against all codes of ethics. While Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” and Ernest B. Schoedsack’s film adaptation both have several similarities, the difference are also apparent in each respective media.
Rainsford is known for his extravagant hunting skills, even General Zaroff speaks of Rainsford as is if he has inspired him to become a hunter. Rainsford talks about hunting with passion, while he is speaking to Whitney he tells her it’s “the best sport in the world” (19). Rainsford has no guilt when he kills animals, he even tells Whitney that it’s nonsense when she mention the jaguars have feeling. But Rainsford shows immediate disgust when Zaroff brings up his hunting of humans, “hunting, great heavens, what you speak of is murder” (26). This only the first of many times that he reacts with great displeasure.

Being hunted on an island is an experience like no other, whether it is a film or a short story. “The Most Dangerous Game” started off as a short-story, but was later turned into a film. Hunting big game animals for sport was a popular pastime with the wealthy classes following World War I. The morality of killing for sport was not questioned in reality, but in this short story the author does question it by taking it a step further and having the protagonist, Sangor Rainsford, hunted by the antagonist, General Zaroff. In a short story full of irony, one of the greatest ironies of Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” is that General Zaroff repeatedly tells Rainsford that he maintains a sense of civilization on his island.
First, Rainsford had too much pride for his own good. “‘The best sport in the world,’ agreed Rainsford. ‘For the hunter,’ amended Whitney. ‘Not the jaguar.’ ‘Don't talk rot, Whitney,’ said Rainsford. ‘You’re a big game hunter, not a philosopher. Who cares how the jaguar feels?’(60).” Rainsford never tried to put himself in someone else's shoes, even when someone like Whitney tried to tell him and make him see empathy. Later on in the story, the General gives Rainsford and chance to hide, then sets out to hunt him. Only after being hunted does Rainsford understand what Whitney was talking about when he said, “‘Not the jaguar’(60).”
As the sweltering, hot sun signified the start of a scorching afternoon, a young boy lay in the fields harvesting vegetables for another family. He had been enslaved to perform chores around the house for the family, and was only given very few privileges. While his stomach throbbed with pangs of hunger, he continued cooking meals for them. After the family indulged in the cozy heat from the fireplace, he was the one to clean the ashes. Despite his whole body feeling sore from all the rigorous work he completed, the young boy had been left alone to suffer. As months passed by, he desired independence. He wanted to cook his own food, make his own fire, harvest his own plants and earn money. The lad soon discovered that he needed faith and courage to break away from his restricted environment. When put in a suppressive situation, every person has the aspiration to escape the injustice. This is what Harrison Bergeron and Sanger Rainsford do to liberate themselves from the external forces that govern their lives. Harrison, the main character of “Harrison Bergeron” written by Kurt Vonnegut, is a strong, fourteen year old boy whose talents have been concealed by the government. Growing up in an environment where equality has restricted people’s thinking, Harrison endeavors to change society’s views. Rainsford, the main character of “The Most Dangerous Game” written by Richard Connell, is a skilled hunter who believes that animals were made to be hunted; he has no sympathy for them. Stranded on island with a killer chasing him, he learns to make rational choices.
