Paré's(2014) article introduces rhetorical genre theory (RGT). RGT tells researchers how to do qualitative research, how to write correctly in different rhetorical situations, and how to deal with the relationship with writers and readers. By listing and discussing several definitions of the genre, the author shows the main effects of it like to create knowledge essential to the community's aims (Paré, 2014, A-86). The discourse community, which is closely linked to the agency, is also described as an important feature (Paré, 2014, A-86), so I coded a part of my data which focuses on the interaction between participates and analyzed the pronouns using RGT. The Letter from Birmingham Jail was written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in April of 1963. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of several civil rights activists who were arrested in Birmingham Alabama, after protesting against racial injustices in Alabama. Dr. King wrote this letter in response to a statement titled A Call for Unity, which was published on Good Friday by eight of his fellow clergymen from Alabama. Dr. King uses his letter to eloquently refute the article. In the letter dr. king uses many vivid logos, ethos, and pathos to get his point across. Dr. King writes things in his letter that if any other person even dared to write the people would consider them crazy.
Pollan’s article provides a solid base to the conversation, defining what to do in order to eat healthy. Holding this concept of eating healthy, Joe Pinsker in “Why So Many Rich Kids Come to Enjoy the Taste of Healthier Foods” enters into the conversation and questions the connection of difference in families’ income and how healthy children eat (129-132). He argues that how much families earn largely affect how healthy children eat — income is one of the most important factors preventing people from eating healthy (129-132). In his article, Pinsker utilizes a study done by Caitlin Daniel to illustrate that level of income does affect children’s diet (130). In Daniel’s research, among 75 Boston-area parents, those rich families value children’s healthy diet more than food wasted when children refused to accept those healthier but
David Foster Wallace, author of the essay “Authority and American Usage*,” praises and advocates for “good” writers who have a strong rhetorical ability, which he defines as “the persuasive use of language to influence the thoughts and actions of an audience” (Wallace 628). To have a strong rhetorical ability, an author needs to be aware of whom their audience is, in order to present their information in a way that will be influential on their audience. Wallace recognizes that an author who applies a strong rhetorical ability will be able to connect with the audience so that they respond “not just to [their] utterance but also to [them]” (Wallace 641). An author needs to take into consideration not just content, syntax and grammatical structure (their “utterance”) but also how their character will be perceived by their audience. A positive tone will make the author seem more pleasant and relatable, whereas a negative tone connotes arrogance and pretentiousness. That is why it is crucial for an author to recognize that an audience will respond to “them” and not just their “utterance,” as an author’s appearance to their readers can also shape how impactful their writing is.
The traditional method is incredibly contextual, meaning, it looks deeply at the source, message, and audience as they interact within a give time span. Furthermore, this method is a critique of the assumed interaction between a speaker, text, or artifact and its intended audience. In contrast, a narrative criticism examines all facets of any rhetorical artifact for its form, structure, and pattern, treating it as a dramatic story that unfolds and reveals itself for a certain purpose. Additionally, narratives are primarily utilized as a cognitive instrument for comprehending significance.
The movie trailer “Rio 2”, shows a great deal of pathos, ethos, and logos. These rhetorical appeals are hidden throughout the movie trailer; however, they can be recognized if paying attention to the details and montage of the video. I am attracted to this type of movies due to the positive life messages and the innocent, but funny personifications from the characters; therefore, the following rhetorical analysis will give a brief explanation of the scenes, point out the characteristics of persuasive appeals and how people can be easily persuaded by using this technique, and my own interpretation of the message presented in the trailer.

Author Jane Fife puts the three rhetorical analysis pieces to work, ethos pathos and logos, in an attempt to teach rhetorical analysis in a classroom. Fife uses a collaboration of all three types of rhetorical analysis. While the author does make good use of the first two pieces of rhetorical analysis, Pathos, and Logos, Fife strays away from the use of Ethos in her article. On April 3, 1964, Malcom X published his famous speech named “The Ballot or the Bullet” and on 1963, the author Martin Luther King Jr. wrote a letter from jail to respond to eight white clergymen, who criticism him for unwise, untimely and extreme. The purposes of both writers are fight for civil rights and black liberation. They both use ethos, pathos and logos in their writings, which extremely useful in getting to their point to persuade the audiences to fight for their belief. Despite there are different between how they use these strategies but both use it very effective and produce very persuasive writings.
Discourse communities are the group of people who can communicate with each other, they may have the same topic, the similar interests, or the same culture. People may use the right language and the similar beliefs so they can recognize in the discourse communities. The writer of “literacy, Discourse, and Linguistics: Introduction” named James Paul Gee, he argues that “we must write and say the right thing in the right way while playing the right social role and to hold the right vales, beliefs, and attitude” (484). People should have the right identity on the suitable places. Discourse communities has a lot of requirements for people to get into, people can learn different abilities on different discourse communities.
The text is tied to speech, which involves a great deal of performance. How one puts out affects how one will be interpreted and therefore we assume personal roles depending on the conflict which arises. What is Discourse Analysis evokes thoughtfulness and self-reflection regarding personal identity. When I speak to several of my close friends, I know I adopt different personas based on common interests. For instance, when I was in my horticulture class in high school, the jokes and personas were all centered on environment, tools, plants, and biology. Whereas with my close friends, general discourse was never about plants or the like, but rather music and events since that was what we were into. This relation between my immediate life and discourse analysis allows me to reflect more deeply on my ties with people as well as any other party I may run
The only source of knowledge is experience as great minds have told. I went through the same thing during this semester as I was doing all my English Assignments. It was July 2016 when I first travelled from my home country Nepal to United States in pursue a better degree in computer science. One that is better than my country has to offer. Jonathan Kozol revealed the early period’s situation of education in American schools in his article Savage Inequalities. It seems like during that period, the inequality existed everywhere and no one had the ability to change it; however, Kozol tried his best to turn around this situation and keep track of all he saw. In the article, he used rhetorical strategies effectively to describe what he saw in that situation, such as pathos, logos and ethos.
A rhetorical situation usually involves a writer or speaker, an audience, a medium (e.g. a text or speech), and a definite purpose. When all these elements converge together to create a suitable rhetorical response, we have a rhetorical situation. This often relies on the type of audience and the purpose. An audience could be as specific as a group of students, movie critics, music composers, healthcare professionals, or homemakers. They are usually the targets or the intended recipients in the line of communication. Genres are a ‘set of conventions’ or ‘specific rules’ that vary based on the targeted audiences. My biggest gain this year is not having as many elementary flaws. Though there are usually, a few commas out of place or not added; however, I feel as though I have gotten better. It helps that in class some of the lessons revolved around grammar mechanics. If I can see how something is supposed to be, I can incorporate it into what I am doing. As far as content goes, I feel as though I learned how to be more versatile in my writing. Instead of writing just one way, I have learned how to write according to the prompt. The grant project helped the most, as it was a completely different style of writing than anything I have attempted before. My biggest gains have been grammar mechanics and content versatility.
Anis Bawarshi states that genre can now be defines as “typified rhetorical ways communicants come to recognise and act in all kinds of situations, literary and non-literary” (2000:335), whereas Jule Selbo explains that it “refers to the division of work according to style, shape, subject matter and content” (2015:1). Despite the fact that these two definitions look at genre from different perspectives, they are both correct as one looks at the tangible elements of a story and the other at the psychological strain of a story. Genre is the foundation of all stories and knowing which genre a story belongs to, helps audiences understand the story better.
