Recommended: Communism vs nazism
In this passage, Winston Churchill attempts to persuade his audience that United States and Britain must mobilize their forces now in preparation to resist military aggression of Nazi Germany and its allies. By emphasizing the moral aggressions by the Nazis and its allies, the author claims that these mobilizations are not unleashing for war, but rather are solely “guarantee of peace”. In order to achieve his goal, the author used various persuasive techniques such as glorifications of actions against injustice, metaphor, and imagery. The author is mindfully persuasive from the very beginning, alleviating the reader’s anxiety or concerns regards to the usage of military forces. By mentioning that there has never been any progress ever achieved by submission of “organized and calculated violence”, the author made the application of military forces seemingly inevitable. He further justifies the incorporation of militant by glorifying the “spirit of resistance to tyranny and injustice”. His extreme …show more content…
Although Nazis is the extreme right-wing party, the author compared Nazis to the “communists”, which is direct opposite left wing ideology. This was very considerate manipulation of the author, considering the targeted audience of this essay. Both United States and Britain employed democracy as the ruling system, thus had repellent toward the left wing concepts. Through criticizing the common enemy, the author attempted to create rapport with the readers. The author directly linked communism to the Nazis, amplifying the antipathy of the readers toward the Nazis. This was further supported through the anaphora. The author repeated the same sentence structure of “Like the communists”. If the author wished to make the sentence concise, he could’ve combined all the sentences; however, his repeated sentence structure, continuously exposed the word “communist”, provoking the hatred of the readers toward the
It was during the 1920’s to the 1940’s that totalitarian control over the state escalated into full dictatorships, with the wills of the people being manipulated into a set of beliefs that would promote the fascist state and “doctrines”.
War is the means to many ends. The ends of ruthless dictators, of land disputes, and lives – each play its part in the reasoning for war. War is controllable. It can be avoided; however, once it begins, the bat...
I identified the first major player in the novel as Phineas. The quote I feel began his role reads: “No one but Phineas could think up such a crazy idea. He of course saw nothing the slightest bit intimidating about it. He wouldn’t, or wouldn’t admit it if he did. Not Phineas.” (14) This quote sets the reader up by describing the sort of person Finny : a daredevil with wild ideas and an air of fearlessness about him.
“I found it. I found a single sustaining thought. The thought was, You and Phineas are even already. You are even in enmity. You are both coldly driving ahead for yourselves alone. . . . I felt better. Yes, I sensed it like the sweat of relief when nausea passes away; I felt better. We were even after all, even in enmity. The deadly rivalry was on both sides after all.”

In All Quiet on the Western Front, it becomes very apparent that some of the soldiers do not feel as if World War I was their fight, when comrades begin discussing the origin of war. One comrade, Albert states that a war is initiated by “one country badly offending the other” (204). This lead to a discussion over why the soldiers are fighting when truly it is one person or a small group of people that are directly offended by an opposing group in a similar position of power. Therefore, why must they discover the true horrors of war while simultaneously putting their lives on the line, when the ones who began the predicament, propelled false advertisement with propagandas that romanticized and glorified war don’t have to live as if the next second may be their
War is a hard thing to describe. It has benefits that can only be reaped through its respective means. Means that, while necessary, are harsh and unforgiving. William James, the author of “The Moral Equivalent of War”, speaks only of the benefits to be had and not of the horrors and sacrifices found in the turbulent times of war. James bears the title of a pacifist, but he heralds war as a necessity for society to exist. In the end of his article, James presents a “war against nature” that would, in his opinion, stand in war’s stead in bringing the proper characteristics to our people. However, my stance is that of opposition to James and his views. I believe that war, while beneficial in various ways, is unnecessary and should be avoided at all costs.

In closing, W.D Howells is successful in his use of these methods of argument. “Editha” paints a clear picture of the men who must fight and the people who casually call for war. He proves Editha’s motives are unworthy of devotion. After all, it is easy to sit back and call for war when it will be the common enlisted man who will die to provide this luxury. In the end, Howells made his point clear. War never comes without sacrifice or consequence.

Private Peaceful is an emotional tale from the perspective of a young adult, Thomas (Tommo) Peaceful, who recalls his life from childhood to his present day experiences. As Tommo tells the story of his life, the song entitled, Oranges and Lemons, is often brought back to the forefront of his mind. Ironically, this brings peace to the lives of the Peaceful brothers, two characters who are seen enduring warfare, loss, and other hardships at a rather young age. The importance of this song to Tommo and Charlie is exhibited when their brother, Big Joe, is seen singing it as he consoles their mother, “...hugging and rocking her gently in his arms, singing Oranges and Lemons until she begun to smile through
MODERN HISTORY – RESEARCH ESSAY “To what extent was Nazi Germany a Totalitarian state in the period from 1934 to 1939?” The extent to which Nazi Germany was a totalitarian state can be classed as a substantial amount. With Hitler as Fuhrer and his ministers in control of most aspects of German social, political, legal, economical, and cultural life during the years 1934 to 1939, they mastered complete control and dictation upon Germany. In modern history, there have been some governments, which have successfully, and others unsuccessfully carried out a totalitarian state. A totalitarian state is one in which a single ideology is existent and addresses all aspects of life and outlines means to attain the final goal, government is run by a single mass party through which the people are mobilized to muster energy and support.
Clausewitz Assignment Carl Von Clausewitz was a Prussian general and military theorist, whose work Vom Kriege (1832 On War) became one of the most respected classics on military strategy. In this classic, he had 28 sections that all discussed what there is to a war. He had an ideology of what a war was, and gave a thorough meaning to it, without perplexing the definition like publicists did. In his own words, “War therefore is an act of violence to compel our opponent to fulfill our war”. He compared “war” to “two wrestlers”, in regards to using physical force to have the opponent submit to his will.
The speech by Winston Churchill, who was elected prime minister in 1940, contains a lot of exaggeration and contrasts to rouse, and maybe scare the people in the United Kingdom. This was important, after Britain was left alone, when Nazi Germany crushed France. First Churchill compares the upcoming battle of Britain with the Battle of France. He does this to show people the reality, and scale of the battle of Britain. Churchill then uses exaggeration, when saying that The United Kingdom determine who wins the war.
