The commencement speech by Steve Jobs will always be remembered as an inspiring and influential piece of work. Steve Jobs gave this memorable speech in front of the Stanford graduating class of 2005 at the University itself. Though Jobs may have only been talking to the graduating class at the time, his speech reaches far and wide to any and all who listen. His purpose for the speech was to inspire those in the crowd to always push forward and lead them in the right direction for the rest of their lives. Jobs’ speech was very effective in drawing in the listener through his use of the pathos and ethos appeals. He uses his own life examples as his evidence, while using strategies of argumentation such as cause and effect, narration, and even …show more content…
He explains how even though he was at the top of the world at a time, it all was taken away when he was fired from Apple at the age of 30. After contemplating giving up, he realized that technology was his passion and he kept at it. He created NeXT and Pixar which were eventually bought out by Apple giving him his original position back at Apple (Jobs). This turn of events showed that even though he thought he had lost it all, he continued to keep pushing hard for what he believed in because he knew his career was going to be a part of his life for a long time and it turned out for the better. In this section Jobs’ uses a little bit of pathos and ethos because he went through traumatic and depressing times, as well as triumphed and became the CEO of both Pixar and Apple in the end. His dedication to his passion showed that by continuing to work he was able to achieve what he wanted. This is true for anyone, that is why so many people can identify with his speech, therefore making it so inspirational for such a large amount of …show more content…
The most obvious downside is that even though he tries to make it seem more reachable through his “normal” experiences, he was a very gifted thinker who earned a large amount of money after his first technological breakthrough which made following in his footsteps hard to achieve. So by overgeneralizing that everyone can follow these steps and achieve success is where Jobs made his fault. Despite this slight hiccup in his speech, Jobs makes sure to allow the listener to follow along very easily with the structure of his speech. He does not go into very elaborate stories that would confuse the reader or go off on a tangent. Instead, he simply uses three events in his life that he felt were important in shaping him into the person he is. These instances in his life show that he is just as human as anyone else listening, yet look at what he has accomplished with life despite these many obstacles. At the time of death Steve Jobs was reported have a net worth of nearly a whopping 10.2 billion dollars (Dodds). This not only helps show that his stories have worked for him, but that even a slightly following his advice could pay out in a big
President Trump’s inaugural address was a speech many have called short, brutish, but effective. While being shorter than the average inaugural address, falling nine-hundred and two words behind President Obama’s second inaugural address, it took only those one-thousand four-hundred and thirty-three words to reach out in an attempt to unite the divided American people. Trump’s speech effectively offers a new vision of our government, by connecting to people emotionally and logically, however lacking many facts and playing more off his credibility, many people questions his point in saying “empty talk is over.”
Throughout more than two hundred years Americans have witnessed more then fifty-six inaugural addresses. In those speeches presidents have been utilizing rhetoric to make their points and outline their positions on important issues before the nation. Both of President Obama’s Inauguration Speeches successfully craft rhetoric through
In the speech, “You’ve got to find what you love,” by Steve Jobs, Jobs uses the opportunity at the convention address to inspire young people to find something they're passionate about. In his speech Jobs uses a very uplifting tone. “Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice,” (paragraph #25) by saying this, Jobs encourages his young audience to not give up on their dreams.
Having been an entrepreneur, inventor, and marketer, Jobs played a crucial role in the evolution of technology considering he started the world’s most successful computer company in world in his own garage. In 2005, the late Steve Jobs made an intriguing commencement speech at Stanford University at the graduation ceremony. His speech focused on three main stories: the first was about connecting the dots, the second was about his was about love and loss, and his third was about death. Using examples from his own life, Jobs shared a speech that was appealing to the audience. The speech is effective and interesting because of his use of rhetoric, specifically, his use of ethos, pathos, and Kairos.
To articulate on Job’s own understanding of this he expresses his encounter with death and the reality that dreams and desires of the future can be lost at any moment. Steve Jobs showcases the story in which he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and faced with the almost unbearable reality of having to say goodbye to everything and everyone he cherished. Because of this experience he was able to understand that “ [one’s] time is limited so don’t waste it living someone else’s life” (23). Living life for one’s self is what matters and one should not put their dreams long after everyone else's. To illustrate this comprehension in a different light one could look unto the life of Roger Ebert. It is apparent that he found what he loved which was being a movie critic. After almost meeting death and having to then live without a jaw, Ebert found himself still using his words to convey his thoughts and opinions but in an even more meaningful form. Even when under the scrutinizing opinions by those that cared for him to stop what he loved, he kept critiquing films until his death in 2013. It takes a certain passion to do work without ceasing and it requires a great deal determination to find it.
Steve Jobs was an incredibly successful individual. In his 2005 Stanford commencement speech and Steve Jobs: An extraordinary career, Jobs’ reveals the habits he put into practice to achieve his success. There are two habits Jobs’ utilized, be proactive and begin with the end in mind.
On January 20, 2009, President Obama was officially inaugurated and sworn in as the forty-fourth president of the United States of America. The tradition of being inaugurated requires the president to give a speech about the goals they want to reach during their presidency. The president must make a speech that appeals to the audience while being professional. Rhetoric is a useful strategy to utilize in speech making. Obama uses rhetoric to achieve presenting his message of creating hope and change together in America while fixing the economic and social challenges and issues left behind from the previous president. Barack Obama uses syntax, the rhetorical triangle, and diction to portray his message.
Wallace is a tremendous writer and orator which is why the overall tone of the commencement speech gave his audience the opportunity to advertise his best ideas. Wallace varies his use of first and second person points of view which invites his audience in to his thinking process. This is shown throughout his entire speech with his use of I for first person as well as his use of 2nd person through his descriptive analysis of his anecdotes. As Wallace tells personal anecdotes and speaks his ideas through first hand experience, he maintains a personal and very direct tone. Also his conversational style challenges his audience to relate to his ideas and take in his ideas in an informal dialogue rather than a complex argument.
Executive speechwriter Anthony Trendl once wrote “A commencement speech, simply, is an opportunity to share your experience, values and advice. The precise form is up to you. This affords the speaker a platform to say amazing, unlimited things.” Steve Jobs’ Commencement address to the graduates at Stanford University was delivered on June 12th, 2005. Jobs is well known for being the CEO of Apple Computer, Pixar Animation Studios, and the inspiration of many rising entrepreneurs. In his speech, Jobs makes it clear that his delivery will be outlined by three short, but important stories pertaining to his life experiences. Each story contains one or two main lessons intended to help these Stanford Graduates as they move on into a new world. Jobs’ over all speech structure, sense of wisdom and experience, topped by his widely recognized success, empowers his speech to be strongly convincing. However, with the happily ever after stories, promises in leaps of faith, and ideally controversial context with college graduates, the speech seems to be a bit less relatively persuasive .

Steve brought so much different technological advancement that most people use everyday without knowing who created them. Everything that Jobs created, he did because he understood what his customers wanted, and where the market was going. Steve Jobs believed in all of his products and innovations he sold to people, and had faith in the people he worked with was what really shaped Apple. After leaving the company and then returning, Steve Jobs’ influence made Apple one of the top computer companies in the world.
I consider Steve Jobs’ commencement speech at Stanford University in 2005 to be one of the most effective speeches. He uses mechanics of speech to craft a well-rounded speech that is crowned by his use of rhetorical devices. Jobs gives relevant and fundamental knowledge of his life and experiences with his rhetorical approach. In his speech to the Stanford’s graduation class, he tells different stories of love, loss, discovery and difficulty he faced in his life to encourage new graduates as they continue to mature in life. He encourages students to pursue their dreams and not be discouraged by failures they might experience in life.
In 2005, Steve Jobs’ gave a commencement speech to the University of Stanford. His speech is a very motivational and inspiring to everyone that has listened to it. He talks about three stories that happened in his life and allowed him to be where he is today. Connecting the dots, love and lost, and death. He puts his life events into perspective and allows you to see how everything came together for him. Never giving up on what you believe in and doing what you love every day.
Most of the graduates are probably going through that stage in their life now. I think he referred to this as a sense of motivation for the graduates. Throughout the speech he gives out tips and advice about making it in the entertainment world. Since he is so respected as a musician this advice is valuable to the graduates. He made music sound like the most important thing in the world, which I think gave a lot of importance to the graduates.
Passion: Steve worked in his father’s workbench. He knew from the beginning that his future is in the creation of new things. And then when he met Wozniak, he got to know that those things were the personal computers (technology). They set their company in a garage. Despite the failures, Steve never lose hope. He got fired from the company that he found and his Apple III
