Taking into account the essence of the sermon,"Sinners in the Hands of God" by Jonathan Edwards, it is evident that his outstanding use of Rhetorical Devices such as Imagery, Analogy, and Simile contributed and greatly influenced the reader to be persuaded and follow through based on the author's purpose. Edwards basically intends to transmit the concept that God is our hero and will lead us to salvation if we on our behalf, believe and honor God. Based on the sermon, the intended audience seems to be people who do not believe in God and are basically when reading this sermon, exaggeratedly given the idea that if they continue to not believe in God, then they will be foreseeing an endless experience in Hell.
Edwards intends to use rhetorical devices for the reason that, people will be instantly captivated and willing to actually understand and use this sermon to change their particular ways. In this example, Hell is depicted as a horrendous oblivion where those who continue to not believe in God, will serve time to. The excerpt states,"..hell is gaping for them, the flames gather and flash about them..". This excerpt basically transmits the message that Hell is basically the end for one's life and it is described as a quite horrendous experience. To go more in depth, Pretenious tools can be seen as a method to make one's concept more engaging and in this case, a way that will surely persuade The Puritans in the case, to believe in the author's overall purpose.
This is due to how Pretenious tools greatly represent what is being said in a way that is exaggerated and will surely grab the attention of the intended audience which are The Puritans. Another example is the use of the rhetorical device simile which in this case clearly creates the idea that God's fury is truly immense for those who refuse to believe in God. The excerpt states,"The wrath of God is like great waters that are dammed for the present, they increase more and more and rise higher and higher...".Based on this excerpt, one can indeed process how God is greatly not pleased of the fact that there still exists people who do not believe in him. The purpose of this sermon was to basically warn people of what there is to come if people continue to refuse to believe in God. Patrick Henry makes a strong argument however in the end, Edwards’ sermon grows to be more effective. Edwards creates the argument by strengthening the writing through tone, structure, fallacies and knowledge of the congregation that became his audience. Henry’s piece uses methods of oratory persuasion but the actual topic of “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” has an advantage from the start by appealing to fear, a fallacy of logic. Even with the strong basis “The Speech in the Virginia Convention” by Patrick Henry, Edwards’ “Sinners in the hands of an Angry God” proves the more effective piece in the end.

In the 1700’s the Puritans left England for the fear of being persecuted. They moved to America for religious freedom. The Puritans lived from God’s laws. They did not depend as much on material things, and they had a simpler and conservative life. More than a hundred years later, the Puritan’s belief toward their church started to fade away. Some Puritans were not able to recognize their religion any longer, they felt that their congregations had grown too self-satisfied. They left their congregations, and their devotion to God gradually faded away. To rekindle the fervor that the early Puritans had, Jonathan Edwards and other Puritan ministers led a religious revival through New England. Edwards preached intense sermons that awakened his congregation to an awareness of their sins. With Edwards’ sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” he persuades the Puritans to convert back to Puritanism, by utilizing rhetorical strategies such as, imagery, loaded diction, and a threatening and fearful tone.
Edwards use of parallelism in the quote “The devil is waiting for them, hell is gaping for them, the flames gather and flash about them” serves two purposes: to instill a sense of fear in the audience and he also gives the audience their first taste of the the pain they will feel throughout this piece. His uses of parallelism allows Edwards to exponentially build a sense of fear and it is maintained throughout this sermon. The audience also begins to feel a sense of fear and helplessness in Edward 's first paragraph, which he will also maintain throughout this piece. Additionally, Edward engages repetition in his speech in order to continuously build fear and suspense in his audience. Edward begins to use the noun “you” after the second paragraph in order to make his argument more personal and more emotional. By saying the words “you” and “your” Edwards is speaking directly to his audience, in doing so he makes the audience envision themselves in the positions that Edwards describes and will make them subconsciously feel the need to convert to christianity because they are now fearful of god, and the only way to abate this fear is to repent and
