Martin Luther King Jr’s most compelling point was that every person has the same rights regardless of their skin color. Our Declaration of Independence states our rights as a citizen of the United States, but not all the blacks are free to the same things the whites are. MLK Jr wanted freedom and justice, he wanted it for every person in our nation, and for everyone to take peace into consideration. He used lots of figurative language to relate the crowd to his understanding of their injustice. He states “We refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt,” in this metaphor he refers to the freedom of the people as a bank. His speech was easier to understand when people could relate to things within his words, such as a bank, money
is a right given to us, it is also a privilege just like our rights and freedom. He rhetorically stated his point by using metaphors and other types of figurative language. Martin Luther King Jr created determination within many people using logos to support him. Discrimination and segregation still wonder among our nation, blacks and whites are treated differently. Logos is brought forth scrimmaging for the freedom that everyone supposably has, and here the logic remains intact leaving us with the truth that still people are judged or mistreated by the color of their skin. The enjoyment of having reliable facts relieves his speech and makes it more trustworthy. Martin Luther King also used a lot of repetition toward the middle and beginning of his speech. If he had not made clear that he was a trustworthy, knowledgeable, and honest man, he would not have made his point clear. King’s statement “Oppressed people cannot remain oppressed forever,” (Martin Luther King 24) is a strong reminder of history. If people do not realize their emotions in a nonviolent way, they will seek violence until they are heard. That statement is one of the strongest concerns to show why direct action was important, as well as, convincing the reader to consider their immoral practices. King goes above any beyond in sharing his beliefs because if he had not, the audience would not have been persuaded. Furthermore, the information and evidence he demonstrated was necessary at that
Martin Luther King Jr. “I Have a Dream” speech was delivered as motivation to fight for their rights and help paint the picture of what America could look like in the future. He does this by in the beginning saying that even though the Emancipation Proclamation was signed African Americans are not treated as normal citizens. By saying this Martin Luther King Jr. was saying we should not just be content with being free from slavery. That now it is time to fight for our rights and to end discrimination because of the color on one’s skin.
Martin Luther King, Jr., born on January 15, 1929, was well known for his nonviolent movement to bring justice and to an end to the segregation of the people in the United States back in the 1950s. With King being the leader of a peaceful protest, it failed to bring equally to the colored people. Martin Luther King, Jr. was labeled as an “outsider” who was “hatred and violence” and that his actions were “unwise and untimely” from the Public Statement by Eight Alabama Clergymen (clergymen). In response, on the day of April 16, 1963, he wrote the Letter from Birmingham Jail to declare and defense his movement was not “unwise and untimely” at all. To analyze his points, King used the powerful literary devices of pathos- use of an emotional appeal.ethos-
These lessons were applied for the duration of the Civil Rights Movement including in Martin Luther King’s words in his I Have a Dream speech, the murder of Emmett Till, and use of Jim Crow laws on public facilities. Atticus believes that people should not be judged until they understand things from the other person’s point of view, such teachings also support Martin Luther King’s messages of peace. On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. led the March on Washington where he delivered the I Have a Dream speech in which he uttered the words, “they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” (qtd.in. Dr. King is an emotional, inspiring and strong speaker. His " I Have A Dream" speech tugs a deep root war of emotions in every American’s heart; therefore, this speech is the perfect display of pathos. Even though pathos overwhelm logo and ethos, they also very much present in his speech.
The speech given by Martin Luther King, Jr. to the African Americans and to the white Americans in the August of 1963 was undoubtedly a motivator for many. It is no wonder why a vast majority of people living in the United States can recite words from the speech of a now deceased man. Because his language and diction spoke to all believers in freedom as well as to freedom's adversaries, his message was universal and had a meaning to all who heard it. This continues today. Freedom and equality are something to be attained, for all of us.
The idea of Freedom can be seen in Collection 2 in the textbook. Freedom can be seen in the speech “I Have a Dream” by Martin Luther King Jr. in the ideas/rights he introduces to his country. Freedom, or the lack of it, is in of the graphic novel “of from Persepolis 2: The Story of a Return by Marjane Satrapi when citizens rights to dress are limited. Lastly, in the short story “The Censors” by Luisa Valenzuela lacks freedom when the government’s safety rule is to proofread all letter that go through the system to avoid their secrets being revealed or gossip about them.
When MLK was taken in to custody, he was charged with “parading without a permit”(King), which really means he was doing wrong because it was a parade against segregation. He was holding a peaceful protest on behalf of the people who did not have a voice for themselves, and he was going to stop at nothing to be heard. MLK, while in jail, was receiving criticizing letters from all over about his protest, he never responded to them until he came across one. Eight Alabama clergymen entitled, “A Call For Unity”, which explained that he should be fighting in courts only and not on the street, wrote the letter. When King writes back that taking direct action is the only way to achieve the true civil rights even if it goes against what is morally right.
Dr. King utilized personal experiences that helped the audience relate to the message that the speech conveyed. Dr. King referred to the different acts and instances that proved that Negros were not equal to the white man. In these quotes: "The Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality.”, “our children are stripped of their self-hood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating: "For Whites Only."” and, “a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote.” In which, at least one person in the audience had experienced firsthand and this is how Dr. King drew their attention and jeering. Dr. King brought this to the attention of the audience by explaining how America is not equal and Negros should acknowledge and demand to be treated fairly. The Lincoln Memorial and the first line of the
Martin Luther King Jr. was targeting the white people of the America that were still on the fence about taking action for black rights. King references the Declaration of Independence three times in his “I Have a Dream” speech. King was passionate about the social equality for the black people of the United Sates, and said the government had given American people of color a bad check. He proclaimed “This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the ‘unalienable rights’ of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness” but even 100 years after the emancipation proclamation, the United States citizens of color still were not a free people. It is important to note that Martin Luther King Jr. does something in his speech that the other two have not. He uses “We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal” clause as a way to emotionally connect with his target audience. While the other two have just use logic and reason to make their points, King points to the hearts of his audience by talking about the Declaration and his dream for a colorblind society, one where “his children will be judged by not the color of their skin but the content of their
Rhetoric: "The use of words by human agents to form attitudes or induce actions in other human agents....The use of language as a symbolic means of inducing cooperation in human beings that by nature respond to symbols." If Kenneth Burke is correct, then I would propose that speakers who use the technique of Rhetoric properly will thoroughly "induce" their listeners to action. Perhaps no other speech nor speaker eloquently used rhetoric, amongst other speaking techniques, to evict such emotion, persuasion, and call to action as the "I Have a Dream" speech by Martin Luther King Jr. However, his speech is not praised for mere rhetoric alone. King paints his speech with vivid " theme" words, quotations, and allusions leaving the listener with a striking and unifying message.
Dr. Martin Luther King was one to use the 1st amendment to protect him in his speech for equality and justice for African Americans. If MLK did not deliver such a strong speech there would have never been equality among races across America. If American citizens across
MLK is talking more about not judging people because of their skin, but judging them by how they act,he wants everyone to be treated the same no matter how they look ,like saying you can’t go into the white peoples movie theater because you have a diffrent skin color,he wants to make everything equal not the exactly the same but equal.
One of the most influential men to ever step foot in our great nation led the civil rights movement with a peaceful approach. The Civil Rights Movement consisted of African American’s wanting the equal rights which they deserved. Therefore, on August 28, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered one of the greatest speeches ever on American soil, in front of the Lincoln Memorial with over 200,000 people in attendance after the March on Washington. The use of the two rhetorical devices, anaphora and allusion, are effective in his famous “I Have a Dream” speech because it helped to bring the speech alive. Also, it inspired not only the two-hundred-thousand people in the crowd, but also the millions of people watching on television. Lastly,
