Whether we like to think about it or not, slavery has been a part of our country’s history and eradicating it was a struggle. Benjamin Banneker, the son of former slaves, writes to Thomas Jefferson to convict the institution of slavery in the United States. Banneker’s letter exhibits his negative feelings on the issue of slavery in which he provided many emotional and religious appeals, allusions and a critical tone to argue against slavery. Banneker uses emotional appeals to provide a sense of compassion and responsibility in the reader. Banneker asks Jefferson to look back on when the colonies were exploited by the British and notice the analogy between the colonies being oppressed by the British and the white oppression of the blacks that they now come to terms with because of slavery. Through this appeal to a time of oppression for Americans, Banneker creates a sense of compassion for his enslaved people because white men and Jefferson “cannot acknowledge the present freedom and tranquility which you enjoy” now that Americans are free from the “arms of tyranny of the British crown.” Readers feel a sense of responsibility for the African Americans remained enslaved even after their country was freed from the British. …show more content…
Banneker makes these religious appeals to attack Jefferson’s pro-slavery stance. Banneker conveys that while Jefferson is “fully convinced of the benevolence of the Father of mankind,” yet he “counteracts his mercies” by letting slavery continue. His religious appeal serves two purposes, the first of which chains Banneker and Jefferson under a common God. This goes on to show that Jefferson and Banneker have a collective understanding. This helplessness is the same emotion that the slaves endure, attempting to evoke sympathy in Jefferson so that he will take action against the unjust institution. Throughout the letter, Banneker recommends that Jefferson, “put your souls in their soul's stead;” the use of pathos and allusion to the Bible calls attention to Jefferson’s religion and how the institution of slavery doesn’t correspond with his religious beliefs. There are many contradictions pertaining to slavery, which lasted for approximately 245 years. In Woody Holton’s “Black Americans in the Revolutionary Era”, Holton points out the multiple instances where one would find discrepancies that lie in the interests of slaveowners, noble figures, and slaves that lived throughout the United States. Holton exemplifies this hostility in forms of documents that further specify and support his claim.
Slavery in the United States of America occurred throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. During this time, over 305,000 slaves were imported into present-day America. In 1791, Benjamin Banneker, a self-educated mathematician, astronomer, and writer, wrote a letter to the secretary of state at the time, Thomas Jefferson. Banneker said to Jefferson, “ I apprehend you will embrace every opportunity, to eradicate that train of absurd and false ideas and opinions, which so generally prevails with respect to us.” This was Banneker’s main purpose of the letter: He wanted to inform Jefferson of the unfairness and injustice slavery brings. Benjamin Banneker’s incorporates ethos, pathos, and logos throughout his letter and that is what makes it such an impactful piece of writing.
Despite each individual having different circumstances in which they experienced regarding the institution of slavery, both were inspired to take part in the abolitionist movement due to the injustices they witnessed. The poem, “My Great-Grandfather’s Slaves” by Wendell Berry, illustrates the guilt felt for the sins of a man’s ancestors. The poem details the horror for the speaker’s ancestors involvement in slavery and transitions from sympathy for the slaves to feeling enslaved by his guilt. Berry uses anaphora, motif, and irony, to express the speaker’s guilt and provide a powerful atmosphere to the poem.
In fact, he completely denies the existence of it when he claims that slaveholders are all responsible to the laws and that, “in short, they forbid him to be tyrannical or cruel.” One exemplification of the tyranny of some slaveholders is that of Bennet Barrow, the owner of many slaves on a cotton plantation in Louisiana. He wanted complete control over every aspect of his slaves’ lives. He demonstrates this throughout his journal especially when he explains that the best way to be in control is to, “create in him (the slave) a habit of perfect dependence on you.” Hereby proving the oppressive ways of the slaveholder. Bennet also did not permit his slaves to ever leave the plantation without, “good reason,” and assimilated rules into their society to give them little chance of having reason to leave. In a large part of his documentation, he admits to making many rules concerning marriage of slaves for this very reason and others. These arbitrary guidelines verify the tyranny and oppression set upon he slaves by their owners. By assuming his rule was to dictate the world his slaves experienced, Bennet was establishing his oppressive nature and that of all slaveholders who assumed they were dominant creatures. The story traces the legal challenges that affected African Americans freedom. The effectiveness and excellent structure of Frederick Douglass’ Fourth of July speech is apparent. His rhetorical arguments served as powerful rebuts to opposing contentions and forced his audience to consider the undeniable error in their nation’s policy and approach regarding slavery. Douglass also compelled his audience to take his words seriously by establishing his credibility, recognizing his audience, and skillfully constructing and executing his speech. The end product of his efforts became a provocative speech at the time and a historical delivery in the future. Douglass succeeded in giving a speech that clearly and effectively argued the absurdity of the institution of slavery in America, leaving it up to his audience to consider his position and decide for themselves how to act in the future.
Every great civilization or country has had at least one dirty little time in their history that all would rather forget. America knows this feeling well, especially within the 19th century, the slave era. America was divided, the North was generally against slavery and all for letting the African Americans roam free in a colony in Africa. The South on the other hand viewed African Americans as tools, essential to the economy and work, however still just tools. Tools to be bought a sold and driven until the breaking point just like every other implement in the shed. Fast-forward to the 21st century, slavery is gone from America and has become that dirty period of time that is spoken about in whispers. A question of immeasurable proportions arises, how were the incredibly difficult slave owners of the South get convinced that slavery was bad? The largest answer is the power of rhetoric, otherwise known as the written word. Two books played the largest role in molding of American society, Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe and The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas by none other than Frederick Douglas himself. Important stylistic and rhetorical choices made by Douglas and Stowe greatly affected change in the major political and moral issue of slavery in 19th century America in two different ways, through politics via the male society (Douglas) and through the home front via religious and moral cases made to women (Stowe).
Throughout our history, there has been several different things that our country has done and supported that we are not proud of now. One of those things is slavery. At the time, slavery was a widely controversial topic from 1800-1860, known as the antebellum period. It soon became known that two regions of the United States had very different views on slavery, for very different reasons: the North being against, and the South being for slavery. With this in mind, the South began to construct arguments in order to defend and legitimize their reasoning as to why slavery should exist and not become abolished. This paper is meant to argue against the Southerners’ defenses of slavery. The South had constructed several different arguments to defend their position on slavery, and among them were the Religious Defense, the Political Defense, and the Economic Argument. Though the South made very compelling arguments regarding the practice of slavery, these three arguments can be proven wrong and dubious by stating that there is a sense of a moral code in the Bible regarding the treatment of slaves, that blacks are not subjected to being lower than whites just because of their race, and that if slavery was to be abolished, the economy would still thrive just as it was in the north.
At first glance, the book “my bondage and my freedom by Frederick Douglass appeared to be extremely dull and frustrating to read. After rereading the book for a second time and paying closer attention to the little details I have realized this is one of the most impressive autobiographies I have read recently. This book possesses one of the most touching stories that I have ever read, and what astonishes me the most about the whole subject is that it's a true story of Douglass' life. “ Douglass does a masterful job of using his own experience to expose the injustice of slavery to the world. As the protagonist he is able to keep the reader interested in himself, and tell the true story of his life. As a narrator he is able to link those experiences to the wider experiences of the nation and all society, exposing the corrupting nature of slavery to the entire nation.”[1] Although this book contributes a great amount of information on the subject of slavery and it is an extremely valuable book, its strengths are overpowered by its flaws. The book is loaded with unnecessary details, flowery metaphors and intense introductory information but this is what makes “My Bondage and My Freedom” unique.
