Thesis: A conflicting reward system within a Criminal Justice organization makes reaching the goals set forth by the administrators of the organization more difficult to accomplish. If individual achievement is rewarded then the organization as a whole may suffer and not succeed in the goals set before it. If the organization as a whole is rewarded and individuals are not recognized for individual accomplishments the moral of the department may suffer. Criminal Justice administrators must balance goals and personnel behavior with a reward system that helps accomplish the overall goals of the organization yet still recognize the individual employee for his/her accomplishments.

In criminal justice law enforcement officers are expected to reduce crime in an efficient manner and administrators are expected to produce more efficiency with less money. Individuals must be recognized in some manner in order to continue motivation for job performance. Administrators will need to continue to set reasonable goals for an organization. In the criminal justice system this can be done through showing officers the personal rewards they will receive for performance of their duties. When officers encounter citizens it is usually when the citizen is at their worst. I believe the goal of this book is to provide officers the information of how to recognize the deterioration of core values (personally and professionally) and what can take place in their lives if gone uncorrected. The book then ultimately provides specific strategies that can be utilized to reduce the negative emotional and physical impact of a law enforcement career. I believe the book succeeds in doing this.
Monetary profit is the first thing an individual recalls when corruption in the police department is discussed, mainly because officers are subjected to enticing opportunities, such as reclamation of missing property and bribes from owners and managers of restaurants. Reward power in Detective Doe’s case is very complicated because of the harm extrinsic rewards can have on a person’s intrinsic motivations (Vansteenkiste et al. 2006). Intrinsic motivation is key in Detective Doe’s line of work because many of the people who join the NYPD do so out of a sense of wanting to give back and help communities. The sentence of the court is the most visible aspect of the criminal justice system’s response to a guilty offender. Criminal justice employees are also unmotivated because out of all the hard work they do, there is little reward for it. Due to limited resources, pay raises have decreased, time and half is now comp time, longevity has stopped, company Christmas parties are gone and the list goes on. It is hard enough for workers to feel motivated under these circumstances but it gets worst when they recognize their pay does not reflect their performance in comparison with co-workers whose jobs are alike (Stojkovic, Kalinich & Klofas, 2008). Now employees are told that they are just lucky enough to have a job. This statement is very true but it is hard to find many people who can perform well in this line of work so the employees need to be appreciated more, especially since the majority of the incentives are gone.
Law enforcement is a career that is both violent and rewarding in many capacities. Justice needs to be served in law enforcement and they have a responsibility to uphold the law and serve the people in the community. Law enforcement is crucial in the world today as a global realm as life continues to be more complex and law enforcement struggles to combat many aspects of crime. One may ask themselves, if law enforcement officers are working to protect the public, why would they commit corruption like they do? As it is described above, corruption is a big part in the law enforcement sector of society. The entire concept is quite complex although it may seem self explanatory to many people. Learning the many types of corruption and misconduct is only the beginning, then, to understand why the officers commit the conduct for which they do. With all this, it becomes apparent to the certain measures that need to be taken to rid society and police departments of the conduct that is constantly present.
The criminal justice system is composed of three parts – Police, Courts and Corrections – and all three work together to protect an individual’s rights and the rights of society to live without fear of being a victim of crime. Individual accountability is indeed important to develop a strong foundation in any agency. Michael Phibbs, Sergeant on the Richmond, Virginia Police Department, published an article on the FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin titled Analyzing Organizational Performance. Sergeant Phibbs gives an insight of the effectiveness of police accountability and how holding ones accountable for their actions betters the agency. Phibbs also stated, “Employees’ level of engagement forms the foundation for this success. Collectively, personnel make the difference in life-and-death situations by expending energy and effort to protect citizens’ safety every day” (Phibbs, 2011). By providing police officers with early intervention systems, the NYPD will better the officer’s performance. As Phibbs mentions, “personnel make the difference in life-and-death situations by expending energy and effort to protect citizens’ safety every day”. The main duty of police force is to protect the community they serve, and by utilizing early intervention systems, aside issues interrupting the officer’s performance can be prevented. The criminal justice system views any crime as a crime committed against the state and places much emphasis on retribution and paying back to the community, through time, fines or community work. Historically punishment has been a very public affair, which was once a key aspect of the punishment process, through the use of the stocks, dunking chair, pillory, and hangman’s noose, although in today’s society punishment has become a lot more private (Newburn, 2007). It is often said that power brings corruption, but in reality it is an individual’s lack of character, self-discipline, and integrity that leads to corruption. Law enforcement can bring many temptations on the job, and maintaining an up most level of personal integrity can often times be very difficult.
