Change of Heart, by Jodi Picoult The novel change of heart by Jodi Picoult published on 4th of March 2008; the bestselling list I took it from is USA today 150 bestselling books 2008. June lost her husband in a car accident, in which he left her with their littler daughter Elizabeth. One of the police officers Kurt helps her and they become friends, she then gets married to him and afterward gets pregnant. Kurt decided that he wants to build an addition to their house and June hires a builder named Shay Bourne. After a while Elizabeth and Kurt are found murdered and Shay is convicted with the murder. The trial starts and all the jury agrees that he is guilty and should be sentenced with death penalty however, one of the jury members was hesitant to sentence him, but the jury manages to convince him. Eleven years later shay is moved to the I-tire prison next to the cell of Lucius DuFresne a homosexual who murdered his lover after he found him cheating on him, also he has HIV. Shay tells him that he wants to save a little girl whom he saw on TV who needs a heart. The girl on TV is the daughter of June, Claire who has a terminal heart disease. A lawyer is assigned to Shay when he decided to take his case to court because he needs to change his method of execution in order to donate his heart. His lawyer Maggie consulate a doctor, he tells her that Shay needs to be hanged instead of being killed with lethal injection. And now Shay has two problems to solve; convincing June to take his heart, and win the case in court. June agrees to meet with Shay to discuss the matter, the first meeting is unpleasant, at last she agrees to take the heart after so many times of changing her mind. Claire’s doctor announces that... ... middle of paper ... ...the murder that Shay was convicted of shows its reality at the end, and Shay didn’t kill the man and his stepdaughter he was actually trying to save the girl because when he went to get his tools he found the girl being raped by her stepfather. Also we have Shay’s foster sister who was being molested as a young girl, and the one who was molesting her is her foster father. In May 15th 2008 the Supreme Court in California removes the ban on gay marriage, and that it would be available in June. In the story we have the love of two gay couple and in the story we can see that the author is with gay rights. The character we have is an inmate with Shay who murdered his lover. Another important event in 2008 regarding Gay rights is in 1st of Jan 2008 in New Hampshire a law came that legalized the union of same-sex couples. And the novel takes place in New Hampshire.
